Thats what I was getting at. So many people are misguided by Verizon commercials that they think they'd be better off if Verizon had the iPhone and not AT&T. The only thing they'd have is a bogged down SLOWER network, oh and forget taking your phone out of the country on business or vacation.
If Verizon joined the rest of the world with GSM and had the iPhone in addition to AT&T then that would be a win win for everyone. Those that don't care about speed/performance and would rather have service out in BFE can go to Verizon while the rest of us can, once again, enjoy AT&T service.1/27/2010 3:16:33 PM |

^ Agreed. I wish AT&T would do an international map commercial like Verizons. Where Verizon has coverage NO WHERE.

What? At&t has coverage in all those areas, and it's faster than Verizons.

Most of the new netbooks have 10+ hour battery life with the new Pinetrail Atoms.

Don't get me wrong. I fucking HATE AT&T. As soon as there's a platform, iPhone or otherwise, on Verizon that does what I need (unfortunately Droid just isn't it), I will be switching, and telling them to fuck themselves with the ETF.
But for a non-realtime critical device (netbook, laptop, tablet), AT&T has never given me a problem. Coverage isn't my issue so much as reliability. Switching towers on an iPhone drops my call. Switching towers on a tablet delays my page load by .25 seconds.1/27/2010 3:18:23 PM |

In your case, you just selected the wrong service provider regardless of the device.1/27/2010 3:19:12 PM |

Actually it wouldn't. Verizon has close to 4x the data capacity compared to AT&T, for 3G data. They have just been much, much more conservative in their offerings. Verizon is a seriously old-school telecom mentality company.1/27/2010 3:20:32 PM |

I rarely if ever have dropped calls, and I tether a lot and I'd rather have the 3mbit service (soon to be 7.2 HSPDA) with AT&T than the 1.5 mbit service Verizon offers.
^^i'm assuming it will get jailbroken which will let people multitask AND tether to your iPhone, which would be kind of cool.

heh. Its funny cause i've actually never had problems with at&t's service here in maine (because no one lives here). I cant figure out any purpose for the ipad beyond an expensive photo frame or some kind of wierd one off device you have for something i cant think of.
For actual use as a tablet, that prototype microsoft thing that was like a book with two screens would be more useful. Something you could hold in one hand and write on with a stylus. Windows 7 handwritting recognition is amazing. And when I say amazing i mean you will be amazed. Not hey im steve jobs check out my really big ipod amazing.1/27/2010 3:25:48 PM |

I see the iPad as a step in the right direction from a hardware design point of view. Its slick, has tons of potential down the road. When the iPhone came out it was seriously lacking. As the years went on more and more desired features were added. I think the same can be said for the iPad.
The software on the other hand is a different story.
Also, why has nobody asked this yet....CAN IT COPY PASTE!??!?

the iphone was a really good phone when it first came out. Whatever it was lacking, it was still better in alot of ways than what was already out.
The ipad is the same as the macbook air in that it doesnt do anything new or even fill an empty market segment. Its a one off device that they know will sell based on the brand, even if those people already have devices that fill the role. 1/27/2010 3:31:23 PM |

The lack of flash is just embarrassing at this point. See: Jobs getting a missing plugin error during his keynote.
It's (barely) excusable on a phone, but for something that is meant to compete with netbooks? Just sad.

There's always exceptions. I'm just saying AT&T does cover the majority of Americans with 3g coverage. Most metropolitan areas. If you live outside one then I'm sorry switch providers. If you live near/in a city then you can enjoy the much faster 3g service provided by AT&T.1/27/2010 3:46:58 PM |

Either that your you have EMP and know when somebody is trying to 'text' you so you can go and load up mobile safari. I'm sorry but you can't compare a mobile texting alternative w/out notification (especially when there's no backgrounding) to SMS1/27/2010 4:00:11 PM |

There is an app that does SMS via wifi. Thats what I said when someone mentioned no native SMS app. Then you came in here saying that it wasn't possible to send someone an SMS when you don't have a phone number attached to it. Then I explained to you how its been done time and time again. Don't know what you are blathering on about now.

seriously, buy a macbook for $750, tether it to your verizon smartphone = profit.
granted you wouldn't get touchscreen or accelerometer, but personally i'd rather have 2 devices than 3 and avoid another $30/month for data
also did they cover how the ebooks are handled? DRM? can you transfer an ebook purchased on iTunes to any other devices?
are the iPhone apps/games really worth even installing on this device?

seriously this is the mentality that because it's an Apple product it must be good. take a step back, i really don't think this is a great device. sure it has potential because dev's see Apple as a money tree they develop for and they have 20 million iPhone users as customers, but the features and service on this device is lackluster.

Because they're awesome. And for $475 I picked up an Asus 1201n with a 12" 1366 by 768 LED LCD display. Dual core Atom and Nvidia 9400m with a 4-5 hour battery life. I can play 1080p HD movies, play games, and do pretty much anything a laptop can do other than CPU intensive stuff. So much is moving to the GPU now with flash beta 10.1, and most design sweets like AutoCad or Photoshop all support GPU hardware acceleration.
My $475 netbook is more powerful in terms of multimedia/gaming/graphical performance than most core2duo CULV laptops in the $600-800 range with integrated Intel graphics (gma 4500 etc) and in a compact 12" display. Not to mention it has an HDMI output so it's essentially a portable HTPC.

^that doesn't really tell me what you'll be using it for. I mean the purpose of a netbook by definition is something light weight, ultra portable that can do basic computer functions and mostly web applications.
I think too many people expect/assume that a netbook is supposed to be just like a standard laptop but ultra portable. Everybody was just expecting Apple to announce a laptop that had a touch screen and was ultra portable.
