Don't they know signing free agents doesn't win you anything?

ok that was pretty funny
but in fact, the entire premise, story and subsequent photos of the entire laser tag thing were pretty amusing

you're right, Jerry has nothing to do with releasing these players.
its all Hurney and Fox's decision, and they are just playing with house money.
and deangelo is the most bestest awesomest running back in the history of the universe. he broke God's rushing title his rookie year. and then shot him in laser tag.

^^seriously you're right though, anybody who doesn't think Jerry is the Godfather is fooling themselves
The problem is he has one responsibility as an owner to his team, to help get the best players available to help the team
On the other hand, he has a responsibility as an owner to the league and owners association to not do anything that could fuck up their side in the upcoming CBA
I still maintain that free agency is very early and we'll make some moves eventually...only player I'm pissed about missing out on so far is Boldin
And whens the last time we signed a big name free agent this early into free agency? Sean Gilbert? Sweet!] 3/8/2010 4:55:23 PM |

I'd argue that the majority opinion is "omg why havent we spent all of Peppers' money on new players 4 days into free agency the sky is falling, look at the Bears"
Look at the Bears. Who was their last big free agent acquisition? Jay Motherfucking Cutler. That worked out well! Hey, they finished ahead of the Lions! Great success!] 3/8/2010 5:03:42 PM |

Quote : | "Hey Tinkerbell,
Hurney IS the GM last time I checked and you don't know shit about who is or isn't "calling the shots" so shut the fuck up. You *assume* Big Cat is doing that and then try to pass it off as fact which in turn makes you look like a dumbass. Good job. " |
Quote : | "NFC South Blog Mailbag- Pat Yasinksas
Q. With all the changes in Carolina, is Jerry Richardson the one calling the shots? Hard to believe that Marty Hurney and John Fox (who are fighting for the jobs) feel like they have a better team compared to a few weeks ago. It appears that the moves being made will mean more in two years than the immediate future. Not sure how this is going to sit with the fans who were expecting us to spend some of that cash after letting Peppers walk. As of now it looks as if we have clearly taken a step back.
A.Yes, these are very puzzling times in Carolina, and I’m not going to pretend to have an easy answer as to exactly what the Panthers are thinking. But let’s try to sort through it. First off, let’s start with Jerry Richardson. The owner has had some health issues in recent years, but he always has remained very much in control of this team and I suspect, right now, he’s even more involved in football issues than ever. I know for a fact Richardson is extremely worried about the labor situation in the NFL and is preparing for the possibility of a lockout in 2011. I think he is sending a message to his players and also tightening things up in case there is no football in 2011
I’ve got to believe he’s the one behind this plan, in which the Panthers have parted ways with a bunch of expensive and older players. As several of you pointed out, it’s tough to imagine John Fox and Marty Hurney deciding to go in this direction on their own. They like to tell you they make the football decisions, and that’s usually true, but, in this case, I think Richardson is calling the shots. " |
boy, i was way off base, Ribs.

Of course he has something to say about his team. You're trying to make the guy out to be a Jerry Jones dictator calling all the shots, when he is really more of a Pat Bowlen though who gives he people a direction and lets them go to work.
You, me, and this beat writer don't have any idea what's really going on, but I do know that the GM's job description includes taking heat when the player personal ain't right. That's why I blame Hurney for fucking this franchise, and it started long before this off season. Piss off McTard.

Quote : | "When Marty Hurney assumed general manager duties in Carolina, the Panthers were coming off a 1-15 season. In the seven years since then, Carolina's 68 victories rank as the sixth most in the NFL. During that time, the Panthers have made three playoff appearances, won one NFC Championship, claimed two NFC South titles, been to two NFC Championship games and played in one Super Bowl.
Under Hurney, the Panthers were one of only four teams to win at least seven games in each of the last seven years. With that resume, it is no surprise that Forbes.com recognized Hurney among the top 10 executives in professional sports in 2007. A year earlier, FoxSports.com had given him the same honor " |
