For reals. It was perfect. Looks like it might be raining tonight, though.

I was standing on the stage for Harlem, at the corner by the hall way.

That was a shitload of fun.

I was to the left of the stairs.

I kept hitting the bottom of my ankle on the bottom stair while dancing/jumping.

hurts so much right now.

i wish i hadn't gone early to kings for atlas sound. like others have said, the two bands before him were migraine-inducing, and cox's performance was too drowsy to make up for it.

tonight though, DANCE PARTY!! gonna see the golden filter and washed out for sure. haven't decided who else yet.

Deakin was the highlight of the weekend and it was the first show. best energy, best sound.

he had to bump my wife so she'd get out of the way so he could get up on stage. then the female keyboardist was makin googly eyes at my wife. i was ok with all of this of course.

different strokes

i like the drone and being a foot away from the speaker was the best place for that

also i saw some guys eyes roll into the back of his head and a guy fingering the speaker on the other side soo...we all enjoy it in our own ways

TRIP REPORT

Broken Social Scene, Harlem, Sharon Van Etten/Midtown Dickens/Lost in the Trees today were awesome

Atlas Sound and Best Coast were pretty good

Panda Bear and Ben Frost were the two worst shows I've ever seen (not counting that first guy at Kings last night who did a 10 minute sustained drumroll before I couldn't take anymore and left)

any artist that holds a semi coherent rhythm will allways lose the 'worst band i have ever seen' championship to this incoherent shoegaze art rock shit ass 'supergroup' i saw in miami. a few weeks ago.

pretty much everyone i saw tonight was good if not great: bright young things, exmonkeys, tigercity, golden filter, washed out. washed out was a great way to end hopscotch, just super chill.

i guess i shouldn't have sat on the stairs in the hall during woods.

the lack of dancing around me during dungen was kind of discouraging for later.

my favorite of the entire weekend was Future Islands on Thursday at Berkeley

honorable mention goes to Juan Huevos (great vids on the projector) and Public Enemy (awkward speech by Flava Flav was amazing and uncomfortable)

worst of the weekend was Raekwon and it wasn't even close

weird.... i was just thinking how I'll never get anything other than the VIP band. It's only $35 fucking dollars, and you got free beer everyday, free food everyday, and the opening party on Thursday with more free food/booze.

On top of all that, getting to skip lines at the smaller venues = priceless.

show ranking:

1. Megafaun
2. The Love Language
3. Harlem (2nd show)
4. Ponderosa
5. Harlem (1st show @ 4 pm, shorter set)

honorable mention: Spider Bags, Light Pines, Bright Young Things (they were fucking great last night.... much needed change of pace from PE).

worst:
Raekwan was like a SNL skit, Panda Bear was unbearable.

things i'm pissed off i missed:
Future Islands, Deakin, Woods, War On Drugs and Lonnie Walker. But, I've seen Lonnie Walker a hundred times, will see 'em again, and Deep South sucks dong.

i'm not saying you did this, but people that skipped shit they wanted to see because usually they avoid a particular venue doesn't make much sense in the context of this festival

i actually loved going places i never go because it was a chance to go there see good shit instead of the lame shit those places usually book

kooley high performing in front of 1,000 cheesy rock quotes on the walls was a juxtaposition that i enjoyed and i could tell it was a nice break from the norm for a couple bartenders

yeah i can't imagine not having the VIP pass. i skipped a few big lines, and free food & beer (not to mention bottled water/vitamin water) from 12-5 every day. not to mention that pre-party was great and had a free open bar

its hard to pick my favorite shows. really loved war on drugs, megafaun (day and night), picture plane, javelin, love language, bss

was disappointed by washed out. maybe he got better (we left early) but it was SOOOOOOO not loud enough. when he opened for beach house he was much more fun. sad i didn't see more of golden filter. they sounded good when we got there, but only got to catch the tail end due to bear in heaven which i wasn't super impressed by.

there are a bunch of things i'm sad i missed though (active child and woods mostly. really disappointed about this but there were other things i wanted to see at the same time), but oh well. no way to do it all.

and i am DEFINITELY glad i went VIP. $35 price difference, free food, lounge, and skipping lines. maybe some people didn't have a problem with lines (dunno what shows they were at, or if they bounced around) but i got to skip some ridic lines and heard some friends w/o VIP end up very disappointed they couldn't get in certain places. maybe if you just post up at one venue all night, you're fine. i could see if it was like a $100 price difference, but $35 was TOTALLY worth it (i mean i drank/ate my $35 worth easily)

oh no, i wouldn't have an issue at all with going to Deep South.... in fact, I did for a while on Thursday night.

but, I know I'll see LW again, and I'd just rather not make that hike to see them at that particular venue. if someone i wanted to see played there, i would have gone. i do think the owners are complete douchebags and would rather spend my money elsewhere, but to support the bands i wanted to see, i would have gone.

Shithorse at 2pm @ Slim's, and Megafaun/Old Bricks later this afternoon as part of the Hopscotch Hangover.

Some metal band, The Body are on late night.

I am too hungover for the Hopscotch Hangover. What a weekend.

And can someone post a partial or full setlist from megafaun saturday night?

^ 12-5, Thurs/Friday/Saturday, you could go chill in this room, sit in these big cushion thingies in the Lenovo Lounge and they would bring you free Newcastles.

From 4 to 6, they gave you free food.

The opening night VIP party on Thursday was free vodka, Newcastle and Jack Daniels from 6 pm to 9 pm.

All of that drinking + the swag bag + being able to jump to the front of the lines >>>>>> the $35 difference. It wasn't even close.

speech was about 9/11 and the military and racism and separatism and peace

basically just reminisced about how terrible that day was in 2001

and thanked the military

and said fuck racism, fuck separatism

and pleaded with the people of raleigh to be united across races and creeds for the sake of world peace

his heart was in the right place but it was painfully awkward

The song I was looking for is called Song for Ariel. That one, I dig.

PS - have no idea how to obtain said song, bc it's not on any albums of his, and not slated for Tomboy.... Fuck.

worth the drive down from ohio.

and though i've seen them many many times, i agree with someone further up in saying that the megafaun set saturday night was the biggest highlight.

i also really enjoyed harlem, sharon van etten, best coast and public enemy.

and I drunkenly tried to convince myself that Steve Nash was on stage with them for a couple of songs

Steve Nash is Django from Old Ceremony and yes they do look exactly alike

btw Mr Scrumples "Song for Ariel" does appear in album form as "Guy's Eyes" on MPP. They don't use the Zombies sample in that version though
