ervin santana threw a 3-hitter over 8 innings and gave up 1 ER and got the loss. this is the reason why wins and losses are the stupidest stats in baseball next to saves
i'm also bitter because he's on my fantasy team and could've gotten me 10 more points if he got the win for having such a good outting. and the fucking guy i'm up against has john danks.

The stupidest stat in baseball is quality starts
Why was last night's Reds/Mets on ESPN game blacked out, but tonight's MLBN broadcast of Reds/Phils not

not that i ever really use quality starts to evaluate pitchers, but how is a way of basically saying someone had a good outting worse than
wins - a stat frequently used to judge a pitcher's effectiveness that can reward pitchers for mediocre or downright poor performance depending on how many runs the other starter gives up
losses - a stat frequently used to judge a pitcher's effectiveness that can penalize pitchers for good to stellar performances (ervin santana today, 2005 roger clemens)
saves - a stat frequently used to judge a pitcher's effectiveness that can reward pitchers for allowing multiple runners on base in such a way that his team's lead is threatened7/8/2010 11:20:37 PM |

For whatever reason, quality starts are a huge part of arbitration meetings and free agent negotiations for pitchers. It's a stat that has more influence over payroll and the game itself than wins or losses probably do. The numbers used are ridiculously arbitrary (pun) -- a 4.50 ERA is quality? There's actually room for improvement (or abandonment) with QS, I don't know what you could do about wins and losses. 7/9/2010 12:09:51 AM |

a 4.50 ERA certainly isn't quality. it's definitely below average, but it's not like it's terrible either. i agree that there's room for improvement on the bare minimum qualifications for a quality start. but giving up 3 ER over the course of 7 IP drops the pitcher's ERA for the day below 4, as does giving up only 2 ER in 6 IP. the other problem with the stat is that it's dependent on ER, which is also far from a perfect stat since it's influenced both positively and negatively by the team's defense, over which the pitcher has absolutely zero control.
i haven't followed the usage of QS in arbitration and free agent meetings, and i personally don't think any traditional pitching stats should be used in this day and age with respect to how much you're going to pay a guy, but i think QS would give a player and his agent far more leverage to argue his case given the parameters of the stat versus, "but i won 15 games for you!"
Quote : | "I don't know what you could do about wins and losses." |
basically nothing, which is why they are worse than QS. they shouldn't be used by anyone.7/9/2010 12:27:25 AM |

Although the save is a terrible stat, I do enjoy looking at blown save numbers and percentage of saves per opportunity.

Josh Johnson has the current MLB top streak of QS's with 15
He's also arguably the best pitcher over the last 2 months

Getting Lee sounds like overkill
In the playoffs, you need 4 starters...they Sabathia, Petite, Vazquez, Hughes and Burnett
You can make the case that you'd only trust Sabathia and Pettite in a crucial playoff game
But they're giving up a 20 year old prospect with 40 HR potential 7/9/2010 2:24:28 PM |

Who cares if they give up a potentially great catcher? They Yankees are ballers like LeBron, they'll just get another one. 7/9/2010 2:35:13 PM |

Well they also have three other young catchers (one of whom is Cervelli) who they like a lot. Admittedly, none of them have the offensive potential of Montero.
And as some of the Yankee beat writers have said today, a good bit of this move is to prevent Lee from going to the Rays or Sox, too.

because catchers of montero's calibur are hard to come by, and having that kind of home grown talent frees up money to throw at other free agents?7/9/2010 2:45:06 PM |

Right, the first 6 years of a players service are the most valuable...look at Longoria

If the Yanks get Lee I think they win the division easily down the stretch. The Sox are beaten down with injuries and a terrible bullpen right now. I don't see Theo dealing for Lee with Buccholz and Beckett back after the break, but CC, Hughes, Lee and Pettite is pretty damn good. 7/9/2010 2:50:16 PM |

^^^ It should also be noted Montero is a below-average defensive catcher. Average at absolute best. Of course, he is only 20, and his offensive potential offsets that a bit, but he's generally regarded as a not very good "catcher" prospect and a very good offensive prospect. 7/9/2010 3:00:55 PM |

Quote : | "but there's only 3-4 really good catches in the game" | You mean good offensive catchers. It's really the only everyday position player where offense really doesn't matter. A guy like Molina in St. Louis is the perfect example. Today's catcher just needs to call a great game and be reliable behind the plate.
The main point of the entire situation is that baseball general managing 101 doesn't apply to the Yankees.7/9/2010 3:36:58 PM |

Offense matters...just not as much as First base or the outfield.
Unless you're elite defensively, you have to hit. 7/9/2010 3:44:21 PM |

Montero won't be a catcher by the time he makes the bigs. He is destined to be a DH-lifer. He is below average at any position they have examined him at.
The other two guys are fringe prospects. I guess Seattle really, really wanted Montero. They asked the Mets for Ike Davis and wouldn't back down so naturally talks didn't get far (according to a Post writer).
**** DEALS OFF. Injury worries about the AA scrub ass that was included.

the mariners are pretty offensively challenged, smoak can rake, the season is a wash, lee would probably walk at the end of the season, the rangers may not be able to resign him, the M's now have one of the rangers' best young players and 3 more prospects. not sure about the quality of those players aside from smoak, but it was definitely an opportunity to weaken the farm system of a division rival that gave up 4 players for a potential rental.7/10/2010 4:38:52 PM |
