^ Was going to ask the same question in the running thread. I'm finally going to break down and get one myself.
This is the one I have been looking at : http://www.amazon.com/Garmin-Forerunner-GPS-Enabled-Sport-Monitor/dp/B003JTLKIA/ref=wl_it_dp_o_npd?ie=UTF8&coliid=I2AI3O5SXZOBZH&colid=1R7PYGANI0DOD
It looks like it's pretty accurate and I like that fact that it doesn't look too bulky, so I could possibly wear it as an everyday if I wanted. The only negatives I consistently see on the reviews are that it doesn't give you an instantaneous pace, but rather an average for the current split (default is mile), which I think is better than instantaneous

^ I've gotten so into my workout before that I've almost tipped over my bike and trainer, then again I'm not sure it was set up stably to begin with.
You could always put it in the hallway if you're worried about tipping. 11/30/2011 10:57:01 AM |

Got the Garmin 210. It's similar to the 110. Should be in tomorrow!

I got the Teal version. Like the look. Main thing I was worried about was GPS (my phone's GPS goes apeshit on some of the crabtree trail)
I waffled between this and the 305, because I want to start doing tris eventually. If you're looking for a good watch for price, I've a lot of friends who swear by their giant orange rectangle.
It can take a foot pod, but not whatever the cadence thing is you put on a bike. It isn't waterproof (shower OK, swim not OK) either. But even if I do tris, I don't see myself needing to swim with a watch.

Nice!
What's your schedule this year so far?
I've got Cary Short Course Duathlon Apr. 7 White Lake half IM May 5
and a trail run coming up late May.
I hear rumors that there is a Jordan lake half-IM being put on in late September. Sounds baller.
How's the training going? I just got my ass back in the pool a few weeks ago, and that's going well. Cycling 100+ miles/week so not worried about that.
Running- working on it. 3/3/2012 6:05:22 PM |

my training is SHIT
but getting this medal in the mail reminded me of how i can kick ass - so it was a bit of a motivator. i was in the pool during the winter - and now looking forward to getting the bike out since apparently spring has sprung
my running is shit too - but i'm signing up myself for a marathon in january so i best get my ass in gear 3/3/2012 6:21:58 PM |

Updating:
So far this year I've done: Cary Duathlon (2.5 mi-18 mi-2.5 mi) Doughman Eating Tri White Lake half-IM Running of the Bulls 8K Tour de Cure Metric Century (in Rochester, NY, got talked into doing that on my singlespeed while visiting town )
got Mayo Lake Sprint on Aug. 11, Jordan Lake half-IM on Sept. 23, Tour de Femme in Oct., and OBX Marathon Nov. 10
Training has fully resumed now that the heat has broken, ran 2x this week, went on a nice 30ish miler today with the Durham Cycle dudes. Before I was sulking inside doing yoga and stability ball stuff. I'm going out again on Saturday for a ride to Mapleview.
Yayyyyyyy training and bicycles! 7/12/2012 9:01:46 PM |

Anyone else training for an Ironman? I've decided I'm going to do one.
I havent been very active in the last few years and put on a few pounds....hoping this will give me motivation to kick my ass at the gym/elsewhere.
I've been running/cycling at the gym 6 days/week for the last 3 weeks and eating ridiculously healthy. I've lost 5 pounds so far. Hoping to get down to a lean 165lbs or so. (~190 right now) 7/13/2012 9:29:51 AM |

I'm not exactly going from the couch I suppose. I've still been running and biking, but just infrequently. And my diet was out of whack.
Thanks for the luck though, I'll need it regardless
On a positive note, I weighed myself this morning and i'm 188.2. I was 194 about 2 weeks ago. Gotta keep this going. 7/13/2012 11:25:54 AM |

Wow, dude. This is my 4th year of doing tris and I just did my first half-IM this year. From almost scratch, it takes about a year to get ready for an IM- so I would set your sights on fall 2013. I'm probably going to do Beach to Battleship as my first full in Nov. 2013 in Wilmington.
Tips:
1) Make sure you get good professional advice on bike fit, swim stroke, and run position before you commit to doing a full Ironman. Any flaws in any event will quickly become magnified after miles and miles of repetition.
2) Also, make sure you have the $texas saved up for it, as tri gear is expensive (at min you'll need a wetsuit, tri bike, helmet, bike or tri shoes, clothing, swim accessories, running shoes etc.) , and entry fees for an IM are ridiculous (>$750 in some cases).
3) IM training plans- I've followed Triathlete Magazine's Essential Week by Week Training Guide from sprints to my half. Some people like online coaches. Most training plans usually require 12-20 hrs/week to complete a full IM.
4) I'd get some race experience under your belt before a full IM- do a few Olys, a half or two. From Olys on up you need to play with your hydration and nutrition strategy, especially if hot or humid.
5) Nutrition- Everybody's got their different opinions on what works best for IM training (Paleo/carb heavy/vegan/vegetarian/etc), just find one that works for you and lets you recover. 7/13/2012 12:19:25 PM |
Bobby Light All American 2650 Posts user info edit post |
Yeah, I've definitely got my work cut out for me. I'm havent decided if I'm doing late 2013 or even 2014 at this point.
I have all the bike and running gear I'll need currently. I'll definitely need some instruction on my swim stroke.
I ride a few centuries every year, and ran a marathon last year. I'm not exactly a stranger to endurance racing. I am, however, very new to triathlons as my only tri experience was a sprint Tri a few years ago.
I'm sure I'll be doing a few marathons and longer tris (maybe even a half IM) before I attempt the full Ironman. I just know that that will me my eventual goal is a full.

swim with a swim group (actual swimmers, not triathletes)
bike with cyclists and try not to draft as much as possible as it is pretty much illegal in IM
run with runners
get your nutrition right.
get evaluated by a coach often if you don't hire one to manage your effort.

Anyone else interested in the Ironman event in Raleigh next year?
http://ironman.com/mediacenter/pressreleases/ironman-70.3-raleigh#axzz25LPGRjy5
It's only half distance, but it's run by the folks who do the Ironman series of events so it's going to be extremely well organized, probably going to be a ton of legit competitors.
Really makes me want to get off of my ass and train this winter. Hopefully I'll be coming off of 3rd shift in January which means maybe I'll be able to live like a normal human being and train more regularly. 9/2/2012 3:59:25 PM |

Yeah, I think I'll probably man up and do it as well. I'm about to start a round of P90X to get back a base level of fitness and then start doing the swim, bike, run training once January rolls around. $200 is pretty steep for a registration fee though. 9/2/2012 6:42:25 PM |

Yeah, about to tell the parents to come and see me do this. I know, and the bad part is that I won't know for sure if I'll realistically be able to do it until January. If I have to stay on 3rd shit after January there's no way I can do this thing. 9/2/2012 7:52:43 PM |

I raced a sprint with my friend since it was her first time, and got really bored because I was going her speed, not my speed.
If your sister is already injured, there's no guarantee she'll be able to do the sprint- I would do the Oly. 9/10/2012 5:42:27 PM |

pretty good actually.
i wasn't sure how things would go given i didn't train as much as i should've and i started the paleo diet about 2 and a half weeks ago. wasn't sure how my energy would be.
but i think i came out about 45 seconds slower than the last time i did this race. i'm interested in seeing how my splits came out. i think the run i was slower, but i really think that my bike and swim were faster 9/22/2012 4:53:44 PM |
AntiMnifesto All American 1870 Posts user info edit post |
6:32 at the Jordan lake half-IM today, 20 minutes faster than my last time at that distance. Thanks aerobars. Also, I set a new half marathon PR- 2:31 on part gravel and pretty hilly, and a new PR at the 1.2 mile distance (28 min).
I recommend the race for y'all next year- small crowd (<200 racers), good rolling course with some big hills, run course is double out and back. Also, close to the Triangle- took me about 40 min to get there from downtown Durham. It was also cheap when I registered early ~$100.
Schwag is also good- a long sleeved T shirt in a non-pink color, medal and a visor. 9/23/2012 4:02:51 PM |

P.S. How were your times Luna? I'm sure you kicked ass.
Maybe not the same as Paleo, but I went gluten free (vegetarian) about 2 weeks ago and noticed immediately how much better I've been recovering from my workouts. I kicked out an 8 mile run on Thursday and felt it had no impact on my race today. I also don't feel really sore from today, except for my butt hurting from spending 3+ hours in the saddle. 9/23/2012 10:22:09 PM |

I get chaffing constantly from riding. Long rides almost always require me to take a few days off. 9/23/2012 10:41:02 PM |
AntiMnifesto All American 1870 Posts user info edit post |
Chafing? What do you wear? Do you wear bike shorts? I prefer tri shorts on super long rides, because there is less padding to move around. In the winter I wear running leggings under my shorts because both don't have crotch seams.
Also check out your saddle fit and overall bike fit. And, my bike dork friends recommend chamois butter- the idea of greasing up my lady bits seems weird, but maybe it would work for you. 9/24/2012 12:21:31 PM |
Kurtis636 All American 14984 Posts user info edit post |
Chamois butter is amazing, definitely use it to eliminate saddle soreness and chaffing. I've never had any issues with chaffing because I have some pretty nice bike shorts, but you could also look at using body glide on any specific spots you've experienced chaffing. 9/24/2012 12:24:45 PM |

ha the funny thing is, i dropped 7 minutes on my swim. 7 fucking minutes. which is like an insane amount of time. then... gained 3 minutes on the bike. biking over manteo bridge with a head wind is really sucky. and then gained four minutes on the run. run i wasn't surprised on given i haven't been running due to the injury.
so overall a wash, but i'm pretty happy with the swim time 9/25/2012 11:12:25 AM |
