From Crisp's bio on GoPack:
Quote : | "Started the season opener at left tackle and was in for a season-high 62 snaps in that contest ... Played mainly special teams during the second half of the season, but was in for 122 snaps for the year, giving up just one sack." |

Oh yeah I guess I do remember Crisp playing in the first game, but after I didn't notice him anymore I figured we used that rule where you can play a guy one game and then redshirt him. Didn't realize he was out on special teams.

It was Christophe in the UNC and Champs game that both were huge, could have put the UNC game on ice, and could have had 3rd and short against WVU negating that subsequent "attempt" at a fake FG. I can't remember if it was Christophe/Mattes in the Clemson game, but that changed the complexion of the game and probably the overall outcome inside their 10.4/13/2011 2:03:37 PM |

Quote : | "O'Brien looking for leaders on Pack's football team By Tim Hall Updated at 12:27 p.m.
Spring football is in the air.
The NC State Wolfpack will open the gates to Carter-Finley Stadium this Saturday at 1 p.m., for the 2nd Annual Kay Yow Spring Game. A minimum $1 donation to the Kay Yow Cancer Fund gets you in.
Even though the Wolfpack return plenty of starters on both sides of the ball from last season's nine-win team, it lost leaders on both sides of the ball — quarterback Russell Wilson and linebacker Nate Irving.
Coach Tom O'Brien may have some concerns about how those leadership roles are filled.
"It's still a concern because each team is different and each team has to define their own selves as a football team," O'Brien said on 620 The Buzz."I think they understand what's expected of them. When we do any leadership training we have 14 seniors, they're the 14 guys out front. We're auditioning them. They're trying to see if they're going to be the guy.
"That's one reason I don't elect captains in spring practice."
One redshirt junior that will by competing for one of those roles is quarterback Mike Glennon, who's had plenty of time to watch Russell Wilson work from the sidelines.
Even though Glennon was a highly rated player out of high school with all the physical tools, it still can't substitute live action in a real college game.
"There's always some questions you have, you've got to get in front of the crowd and play. But a guy like Glennon will only get better the more he plays. He's very talented, he can make every throw," O'Brien said.
He also pointed to Glennon's roles on state championship teams in high school in Virginia and his role as a leader on those teams. One thing that won't hurt is the consistency being built on the offensive line, which is now two deep with scholarship players for the first time in the Tom O'Brien era.
NC State is also coming off one of its best attendance years in school history and season tickets for 2011 are already selling.
O'Brien has his own measuring stick that tells him how excited the fans are for Wolfpack football.
"I saw people the other day walking through the stadium checking seats off. People do come to the stadium with their pads looking at different seats. You don't have to work hard to raise expectations around here," O'Brien joked. "They get pretty well going on their own." " |

playing devils advocate here...(purely hypothetical)
Let's say RW does indeed come back for fall practice. We're committed to Glennon, he's our starter, etc. Week 2 @ WF Glennon struggles a bit, missing WR's and throws a pair of INTs.
How long, do you think, it would take TOB to sub in Russell Wilson? I would imagine it would be so difficult to keep him off the field while your relatively inexperienced QB struggles. It would be a Catch22 situation in terms of team continuity...but seriously, if #16 is standing there watching on the sidelines, how does that affect the team psyche? 4/14/2011 8:57:08 AM |

A single bad game is not enough to take out your committed starting QB to play anyone (RW or not). Glennon is the guy now, and that means the coach is going to support him and have his back all the way down into the gutter six or seven games later if this is a disaster. If he knows RW is going to come clean up the first time he makes a mistake, that's a lot of pressure, and it's dumb to put that on your QB and expect him to play well. It would take Daniel "don't make me do stuff" Evans levels of fail for several games before TOB would even think about making the sub.
And RW on the sideline doesn't affect the team psyche. He is the backup, the offense will be sold and ready to follow Glennon. The team wil be happy to have RW on the sideline sharing the experience, but they won't mutiny and force him out on the field to take Glennon's spot.

one issue with all of this is that the entire offense is going to be changed, Glennon and Brosious (And whoever else) will have practiced in this offense while RW will not have. This is simple fact. Not saying that RW wouldn't be able to learn it, but it would be the same situation if he transferred to another school, he'd just know everyone's name already. MG and TB are learning this offense now, have taken and will have taken multiple reps in it, will do more and more reps over the summer. 4/14/2011 11:23:13 AM |

If Wilson comes back, maybe TOB would employ some type of strategy where Wilson gets a series every third possession or something just to screw with the opposing defenses.
Or maybe some type of gimmick offense where both Glennon and Wilson are in the backfield together ala Rivers/Hannum. Maybe have Wilson come in on 3rd and short plays to give us more options.

You can look in any direction in football and see coaches hanging on and letting their QB's stay on the field while they crash and burn. RW will not come back and dance onto the field in the first half of the season, (almost) regardless of how poorly Glennon does.
That's just how football and coaches work. 4/14/2011 1:25:44 PM |

Quote : | "NC State LB Cole adjusting to new role
NC State linebacker Audie Cole said he was “pretty lost” at his new position, middle linebacker, when spring practices began.
“I really had no idea what I was doing,” he said.
That was then, this is now.
“I’m a lot more comfortable,” he said. “I still make a lot of mistakes, but I make less mistakes every day. I figure if I keep doing that, I’ll be alright."
So will NC State's defense.
As the Wolfpack prepares for its annual spring game at 1 p.m. on Saturday, it does so knowing Cole’s move from strongside to middle linebacker was a good one. After leading the team in tackles each of the past two seasons, Cole is ready to emerge from the shadow of Nate Irving and into the spotlight.
“I like it because you’re always in the action,” Cole said. “You always have something to do. A lot of things rely on the middle linebacker. Our middle linebacker and our weakside linebacker are our quarterlinebackers. It’s mostly our job to get everyone lined up and stop the run. It’s an important position. I’m glad I got the chance to play it.”
Cole tied for the team lead in tackles last season with 97, and his 10.5 tackles for loss ranked third on the team. Nobody on the defense played more snaps (809), and Cole was integral in coach Tom O'Brien's fourth straight win over rival North Carolina. Cole tied his career-high with 13 tackles, including a six-yard sack and he also recovered a fumble.
Despite his past success, Cole said he's still "a long ways away" from where he wants to be as a middle linebacker.
“I know the whole playbook, I can tell you everything in the playbook. That’s not the problem," he said. "I have to get more instinctive and picking up on things on the field and knowing what’s going to happen before it does. That’s what Nate was really good at. Nate could see the play before it even happens. It just comes with practicing and watching film. I’m a long ways away, but I’ll be ready by the first game for sure.”" |
