Quote : | "t back to the same impoundment...and for all you jokers that want the location i have it if you bear through my report...lol
Anyway, went back at around 7:30 and left at about 8:30. Started off slow, a few misses again (i am starting to think fish dont really slam flies too hard around here for some reason, perhaps residual heat. I had no camera so you guys are just going to have to trust a fisherman's tale.
Overall, the carp were extremely active, maybe because it was post-rain. They were jumping clear out of the water the entire hour i was there, could never get any to strike. They were also heavily patrolling shoreline, probably crashing crayfish. None of those would bite either, so i took delight in scaring them as elaborately as possible the whole time i was there.
My results for the day on my frog colored popper, fished the first half of the hour was one quite large green sunfish that i dapped between some rocks at my feet. I was quite surprised. After an hour of that i switched to a size 8 or so purple sparkly conehead wooly bugger. I figured since the water was a little higher and i knew where the structure was, a streamer would be more of the way to go than surface fishing. Man did that get the action going, off the bat i missed two massive strikes in the channel. Then I casted to a submerged stump that i knew was there and got a hard hit from what wound up being a 15" 1 3/4lb bass (i normally dont weigh and measure fish but like i said i have no camera.) Visually not as big as the one from the last trip but just as mighty, lean and mean, great fight on a 5 wt rod for sure. On the very next cast to the same spot i caught a decent bluegill. After that the spot went dead, but on my retrieves I caught three crappieabout 15 feet out from where i was standing." |

So have you caught a bowfin on the fly at the impoundments yet? How bad are the mosquitoes? I have been meaning to get out there and check it out, I duck hunt, so that gameland can serve me twofold.
I thought that carp were no predatory fish, i thought they were "herbavores" I have never heard of them eating crayfish. 7/28/2011 1:27:10 PM

BigHitSunday Dick Danger 51059 Posts user info edit post |
no bowfin, and actually i have never in my life successfully landed one, and since ive moved here from jacksonville i have not even hooked up with them; seen plenty though they tease me man
the mosquitos are absolutely zero. no issues whatsoever its odd
i dont think the carp were feedign its some other form of behavior, alot of fish do that breaching because of parasites; but the common carp are omnivorous, grass carp are sterile herbivores
both can be taken on any fly really, though with grass carp they probably mistook it for some plant material or seed

Got down a couple hours ago. If the wind lays down, I'll try to slip out early tmrw before it gets hot.

Lost one small flounder this morning. Was able to get a few nice finger mullet in the cast net last night. This is what happened to one of them I was dragging.

Pretty sure its a flounder bite. Too clean and round to be a bluefish bite. 7/29/2011 10:30:32 AM

I was going to say bluefish, but you know the salt much better than I do. Glad you got to get out on the water, you get to give the trolling motor a good workout? 7/29/2011 10:44:11 AM

Yes and it's great. The cruise control is awesome. Troll with the wind then turn and work back into the wind and go the same 0.6 mph but never adjust motor speed. Sweet
[Edited on July 29, 2011 at 10:49 AM. Reason : could've been a blue but their bites are usually kinda ragged] 7/29/2011 10:47:10 AM

specialkay All American 1036 Posts user info edit post |
yea, i am jealous of the cruise control, I end up only fishing one direction because it just becomes too much of a pain to stay on course and speed. Maybe one day I will own one, but just cant justify until i get a bigger boat. If i want to refish an area i usually just crank the engine run back to where i started the drift and work the area going the same direction again (usually with the wind on a slow drift aided by bursts of the trolling motor)
The GPS one fascinates the hell out of me. Be able to just have it plot ur troll as you go and then just hit a button to reverse it and go back. awesome. I wonder if they have the technology to hook a GPS plotter up to the trolling motor and save your course for later use. 7/29/2011 10:57:40 AM
|
NeuseRvrRat hello Mr. NSA! 35386 Posts user info edit post |
They don't have that for trolling motors yet, but I think with all the cool NMEA standard networking stuff a trolling motor that networks with your plotter will happen. The i-pilot like mine will store up to 3 tracks
What would help me even more is having it follow a specified depth contour. Now that would help me catch more fish

That would be nuts. I guess you could get pretty close if you could just input gps coordinates and have it run that. hmmmm, wish i had the dough to try and throw together a prototype. Would prob just need a microcontroller to communicate between the two. 7/29/2011 12:04:35 PM

NeuseRvrRat hello Mr. NSA! 35386 Posts user info edit post |
Yeah if nothing else let me draw the track out on my PC (following depth contour) and upload into my lowrance unit and then have the trolling motor follow it. It'll happen eventually. Seems like the current ipilot was a low cost way for minnkota to feel things out. Folks on fishing forums are already hollering for what we're discussing and all the technology exists so there's no reason we won't see it in a few years.
[Edited on July 29, 2011 at 1:35 PM. Reason : i mean, we already do this with autopilot units. all we're missing is a wire and the code ] 7/29/2011 1:33:26 PM

i caught a 2lb bluefish last friday on my homemade pinfishing chickenrig...4lb test, almost snapped my line I was not expecting to catch something
we went out on the winner fleet head boat and went through about 20 pinfish without a single keeper. caught a pretty good sized dogfish but we could only keep one per boat and had taken a smaller one. brought home a few meals worth of french grunt/snapper mix. great seas 7/29/2011 4:34:48 PM

Was headed out to the lake this weekend, saw it was going to rain, but i was trying to get out there early and get some fishing in. Stopped to pick up a buddy. He wont answer his phone or me knocking at his door. Guess he had a bit too much to drink the night before. So I am trying to turn the boat and van around in his yard/driveway in the dark. Austin Powers style 25 point turn. Failed to see the big ass rock he was using for "landscaping" and bashed my tie rod against it and bent the shit out of it. Awesome great start. Decide to head to a ramp that i have never fished before, driving around in the dark and I cant find the place. At this point i decide that it is in my best interests to go home and fix the tie rod before i do any kind of damage, so I set off. Get back to my house and hop out to unhook the boat and put it away and i notice that the cowling has somehow come off the motor somewhere between my house and the upper end of Durham. Hop in my other car and set off retracing my route, thinking maybe ill be lucky. Well i found the cowling! smashed to bits on the side of the highway. I havent even started looking for one yet and i dont want to know how much it is to replace it. Fortunately I have 3 of the same motor, so I have a "spare" but eventually I will have to find a replacement.
So now the van is up on ramps and im replacing the tie rods. Hopefully i can get that done before the end of the week and get it aligned so that I can get out this weekend. Im just glad i didnt miss out on any good fishing, it ended up raining all day. 8/2/2011 8:14:02 AM

68 Johnson 9.5 sportwin the evinrudes will fit it too. These are fairly common engines, so it shouldnt be too hard to find. It was a green military issued motor though, so a color match is completely out of the question. I cant even find where Johnson made a green motor, just assuming it was military issue. I know it could have been painted, but this thing is green inside and out.
I was going to go talk to that boneyard boats guy in selma at some point. Fortunately i have the luxury of waiting for a good price on one since im not using all 3 motors I have. The shitty thing is that the latching mechanisms are just slightly different for different years, but nothing a little redneck engineering cant fix.
Just sucks to have to spend $70 on a new tie rod, 30-50 on a new cowling and not even get the damn boat wet.
haha, BHS, guess i should have put it in the boating thread.
the tl;dr summary: Went to go fishing on sunday morning and ended up fucking up my van and boat motor and never got a line wet

Got out on Kerr Lake with Pops this weekend. I had a terrible day, only caught two and one of them was only 6", both on plastic worms. Dad caught about a dozen, mostly on a pop-r. First time he has out fished me all year, and he made sure to let me know. 8/8/2011 7:20:51 AM

quantum cabo 20 spinning reel on a quality 7' medium or medium light 1-piece graphite rod. i can do any artificial or live bait for trout, flounder, drum, or stripers with that.
also, any shimano 2000 or 2500 spinning reel as long as it has instant anti-reverse on a 6'6" medium light is very versatile, but sometimes not quite enough if you get into the bigger stripers and overslot reds. 8/26/2011 4:36:09 PM

Advice for someone that doesn't want to break the bank on a rod/reel combo that can target spanish/flounder/specs and things in that size range? I'm fine with scouring craigslist for some used stuff if there is better value there. Not wanting to invest a ton at this point until I decide if i like it/half the time to fish enough. 9/5/2011 8:08:37 PM
|
NeuseRvrRat hello Mr. NSA! 35386 Posts user info edit post |
main things i would look for are an all graphite, one-piece rod with cork handle and a reel with instant anti-reverse. those are the most important features imo.
i would suggest a shimano convergence 6'6" or 7' spinning rod in medium or medium light. make sure to get a one-piece model. should be about $40 or $50 i think.
put a 2000 or 2500 size shimano spinning reel on it. something like the solstace ($40) or or sienna ($30).
spool it up with 8 or 10 lb test power pro braid.
for a little over $100 you can fish artificials or live bait for specs, flounder, and stripers and cast artificials to schooling spanish. if you wanna troll for spanish, just hand line. 9/5/2011 8:37:22 PM

no kidding. If I'm just jumping around some canals looking for bass I still have at least 3 rods with me. Hell, I take 2 just for pond fishing. If I'm in-shore saltwater fishing I have at least 4 rods of various lengths/weights just so I can have various lures rigged up; poppers, light jigs, heavier jigs, rattletraps/yo-yos.
Don't think I'll be able to go out for a while since Irene has left Oregon Inlet ramps closed and the sound is full of floating debris like power poles, docks, pilings, etc. Some people are stumbling upon whole sections of roofs and submerged cars and crap. The new cut at OI is 7-10 ft out to the bar, but should stay pretty protected if we get a favorable wind during the fall.
I do need to get myself some heavier trolling gear if I want to go after stripers this winter. I hope they are near-shore again and don't go way out like a few years ago. 9/6/2011 8:15:03 PM

We would have had much much more with the amount of sea bass and extra vermillion we threw back.
