So you didn't know it was a separate whiskey? Or is there a hidden meaning that Google doesn't know about? Also Jack Daniels has it trademarked.

Skwinkle's post on the previous page reminded me that when the 2009 film Avatar was being hyped, I thought it was short for Avatar: The Last Airbender (which itself became a film the next year, though not quite as good).

"I have no idea if this is common or uncommonly known: Helvetia is the female national persona of Switzerland. I had seen stamps labeled Helvetia and didn't know what was up with that."
I always just knew "Helvetia" as the name the Romans had for the area, after which the greatest typeface ever invented was named: Helvetica.

A couple days ago I learned that Alexa, rather than being some shady spyware peddler, is actually the brainchild of the same people as the Internet Archive; after that, I willingly installed the Alexa Toolbar for IE and the Alexa Chrome Extension.

Then I lol'd when I learned that twitch.tv has a much higher Alexa rank than its parent site, justin.tv

^^^I am not being snarky.

I have never heard the phrase "gentlemen jack" without it meaning the whiskey.

Jack Daniels does indeed have "Gentlemen Jack" trademarked.

I googled "gentleman jack" and all of the first page were referencing the liquor.

Green seriously, I can't tell which is which most of the time.

Also gentleman Jack is a liquor produced by Jack Daniels. It doesn't refer to just regular old Jack

so do color blind people have a conception of colors they can't see?

i don't know. i see colors, but often can't differentiate between shades of some like green/brown, blue/purple (those are the worst for me, by far) etc, etc. When I was little we had this giant box of crayons at home, and I would only use the ones that still had the wrapper on them so I could read what color it was.

[Edited on June 13, 2013 at 2:54 PM. Reason : so i don't have Achromatopsia (AKA total color blindness)]

when people greet you/say goodbye to you with super-friendly smiles on their face, this doesn't necessarily mean that they like you

sometimes they're just being amiable, out of habit

^I didn't know that until a few years ago when I went to India. The fuel trucks you see are mostly all hand and many of them have large lettering to let you know that the contents are "HIGHLY INFLAMMABLE."

It was then that I decided to look it up

^^ I did. I also took 101 and 201 at State (though 201 was pretty horrible). But this was also 12-14 years ago. Maybe I knew it at one time?

People with color blindess have some weird shit going on. Two of my co-workers, who are both red-green colorblind, see the bright white produced by our new HD laptop displays as heavily red tinted. (Or their conception of red, anyway). To those of us with standard color perception it looks, if anything, slightly bluish.

I hope that video that Smath linked was to a clip of Clarissa Explains It All.

Cause that's how I learned the flammable/inflammable thing.

ha... no it was the scene in Terminator 2 where they are rigging up the explosives to blow up the Cyberdyne building. Some of the barrels have "Inflammable" on the side. They didn't discuss it in the movie but it clued me in that they can mean the same thing.

learned this in a sports talk thread...but apparently leaf collection services are quite common.

personally, i've never thought about it. i grew up in a real rural area. we didn't have any leaf collection service. i've lived in an apartment since graduating, so i've never really had to rely on a leaf collection service myself. i figured people just bagged 'em up and had the garbage trucks pick 'em up.

it seems that sugar causes cavities, like it's a physiological necessity for them. if you never ate sugar again, you could never brush your teeth again and still get zero cavities ever.

I don't know if this is commonly known, but the connection b/t sugar and cavities was weak and stupid enough in my head that I think it deserves mention here.
