Hey ordering chinese at 2:30am during college is way different than going to nice restaurants. I'm starting a food blog in Charlotte because I go out so much.

On the contrary Charlotte is becoming known for their restaurants. After living in Raleigh for 5 years then moving back to Charlotte. Charlotte is waaaay better than Raleigh in terms of food. For some reason all the bankers bring lots of good food to the area. Makes sense. Money=better chefs.

I'm a foody. I go out way too much. You have no idea how many rich fucks eat in Charlotte and want good food.

and I love going to mitch's... it's nice to eat somewhere that's not all deep fried bar food. (not that deep fried bar food isn't good... it's just nice to take a break from it once in a while while you are out)

and the service is awesome (at least it is when i go with my friday afternoon/evening group)

"If the Wolves' Den is still the same set up as it was when I left 3-4 years ago, it belongs at the top of the list. It represents everything that's wrong with American Cuisine today. Chicken fingers, cheese sticks, potato skins absolutely saturated in grease. Pizzas with 90 percent of the toppings on one side. "Salads" with six pieces of lettuce and enough shredded cheese, bacon and ranch dressing to clog an artery. Corn dogs with a lard sheen so translucent that even coming in brief contact with one could lead to a breakout. Cooks and staff who looked to been escapees from a leper colony. Tables that looked like they were cleaned once a fortnight, with crusted food residue and bodily fluids stuck to every surface. Lighting that resembled a portmanteau of K-Mart's home furnishings section and a 70's porno set. Condiment trays that were refilled as a matter of convenience, not necessity. Bathrooms that gave Harellson a run for their money as the most disgusting excuse for a cesspool on campus. Everyone associated with State should push for its ousting. They can't get rid of that shithole soon enough."

It was fitting that it was the hub for LAN parties and DDR and such. The only people who can eat there are people who eat for comfort, not necessity.

It's supposed to be the "sports grill" on campus at State. Go to Clemson, they have one that is an actual restaurant, not a snack bar with long tables.

And if you include all sub places in Raleigh, including on campus, Lil Dino's is tied with Subway. At least Lil Dino's bread didn't stink so bad.

There's no point. It's just common knowledge the food in Charlotte is way better.

Not to mention our 6 restaurants on this show:

Raleigh has a grand total of zero.

"if sadlacks prices are *far* too high for the quality of the sandwiches, where are some places that have better sandwiches for less? preferably somewhere in decent shooting distance from campus..."

Oh come on synapse I was just trying to be a dick. As I said in my first assessment of Sadlack's, it's easily, easily the best sandwich in the area. There is no comparison there. It's just that I'm a bit of a sandwich lover, but I'm a straight-up Scrouge McDuck with my money. I will admit that the slightly higher price is worth it when you want an actual sandwich. Just chill it with the accusations that I should go to Subway, I weigh that as a tremendous insult to the sandwich community.

Also, I don't know who was asking about Gravy, but yeah it's pretty mediocre. I was very excited about eating there the first time I went, and the food was just okay and the service was bad. I've been back since, and I've noticed that the food is simply inconsistent. The best appetizer on one day can be awful the next. So I don't think it's a bad restaurant necessarily, but I don't really think I'll be going back.

Credibility in this discussion goes out the window when you cite Food Network.

And even in the category, but not necessarily just Food Network, there's tons that have visited Raleigh. Including: Man v. Food, Alton Brown, The Neelys, Samantha Brown, and Rachel Ray.

But for citing yourself a foodie, it's strange you jump to Food Network, and not the dozens other credulous sources like Food & Wine, Gourmet, and Saveur, all of which have lavished praise on Raleigh and the rest of the Triangle.

Ok I retrack my blanket statement saying all food is better in Charlotte. I'm simply saying out of all the restaurants I've been to in Charlotte versus Raleigh. I have more favorites in Charlotte. That's tough to say to because I turned 21 in Raleigh. There's just so many more nice restaurants in uptown Charlotte than Raleigh. I like walking to places I guess. If I have to drive it detracts from the experience.

the tacobell on western is an abomination. may god have mercy on their souls. i have stared death in the face and returned to warn those who have yet to take heed. the darkest depths of hell are nothing in comparison to the dark chasms of western blvd, the fiery abyss that lurks in the establishment has no equal. employees, demons with dark souless eyes and fangs slave over rotten festering flesh wrappen in tortias and fed to the gluttonous sloths that inhabit such an evil place. i would not wish such a meal on my worst enemy. to subject your bowels to such a gruesome demise is to spread your ass cheeks apart and let loose oblivion. fuck western taco bell

Define uptown Raleigh. (I'm even more confused given that Gravy is, in fact, downtown.) Or if you're in Charlotte now have you gotten on board with the Uptown == Downtown jive talk?

CAN WE QUIT WITH THE CHAIN RESTAURANT MENTIONS IN THIS THREAD. JESUS.

And I've never had a problem at that taco bell location. Maybe your digestive system is just a big pussy?

There is no Uptown Raleigh. That's just some gay thing people in Charlotte like to say. You have to have a huge urban area in order to differentiate one section from another (like uptown, midtown and downtown). Neither Charlotte or Raleigh has this. It's just...downtown.

There's a reason we have lots of nice restaurants in DOWNTOWN Charlotte.

Yes I realize $$$ doesn't mean good but there's an obvious trend towards more expensive restaurants having better food. (remember I love diner food too).

I cannot wait for Sadlack's to be blown up or bulldozed. they have the absolute worst clientele in Raleigh. burnt out 40-50 year old alcoholics that are there every day, weirdo 20 somethings who took too much LSD and sit on the porch all day smelling bad, a 40-50 year old prostitute who is always there and always wasted, people doing lines in their cars in the parking lot, shitty cover bands, dogs that look like they've never eaten in their life. i mean fuck, it's like 3 doors down from a halfway house. and everyone at the halfway house hangs out there everyday and gets drunk.

I work next door and it is the most depressing place on earth to walk by every day. not to mention the owner's gay son who works the bar at lunch is a giant prick. their sandwiches are decent, but not even close to being worth what they charge for them. tons of better and more reasonable places to get a sandwich around town.

I'm not really sure where to get Italian in Raleigh. Amedeo's and Gravy were OK to me but not enough to make me want to go back. Most of the stuff I get at 518 tastes bad to me and the dish I got at Cafe Luna was awful. I'm thinking maybe I just ordered the wrong thing on the menu.

When it actuality it sounds dumb as hell.

^ That's because most Italian restaurants suck and/or are boring. When you find a fantastic Italian restaurant, it leaves you dreaming of your meal for days!

"Nice" downtown places? Depends on your definition of actual nice, I suppose. Places where you spend a considerable amount of money and/or dress nicely? Second Empire fits the bill and I'd say it's downtown, though not exactly in the core section amdist the tall buildings. The Mint might qualify, not sure.

Not sure other than that, though. Most downtown restaurants are a little more casual, though many of them are quite good.

Yes and good/welcoming/warm are all very subjective terms. What's "good" or "welcoming" to you might not be to someone else.

I miss the Rockford though. They had yummy sandwiches. They still closed?

The funny thing is that, when I was little and my dad was still doing research for the Horticulture Dept. at State, he used to say the same exact thing about Sadlack's in the 70s, 80s, and 90s. Burnouts, crackheads, old hippies. I did have a drink there once, on the porch, after a bike ride with some people who wanted their subs. You see some gutter punk type kids there sometimes as well, but there about the only ones with anything at all interesting to say. Everyone else is like "yeeeahhhh...uhhhh...yeahhhhhhh" if you ask them what kind of beer they like.

Do you work at Schoolkids? My wife and I always stop by there whenever we pass through town to buy vinyl, so I've probably seen you there if so.

AND SPEAKING OF that strip, has anyone ever eaten at Left Right Wings or whatever it's supposed to be called? I used to park in a private lot back behind there and the place always had a pile of dead or live rats behind it. Who even eats there?
