Considering it's virtually the same card as the 570, even OC'd won't get you above 35fps @ 1200 with Ultra 4/16.... the 580 can only do 36fps at that resolution.... 50fps is bullshit.
40fps average maybe. 50fps max." |
I already showed you how the 570 is not like the 480 in technical details. Also I scored over 6k in 3DMark11 which is higher than a stock 580 achieves. OCing the GPU in this game helps tremendously. If you really want I can make a video, but I'm having trouble getting FRAPS to show up on the screen. I use my G15 heads up display + MSI Afterburner to monitor my FPS. You do realize how big an OC of 880/1760/4000 is over stock right? Stock is 700/1400/3072, I am running a $70 GPU cooler specifically designed for the 480 (and only the 480) to achieve that OC along with an Antec 900 and $100 in fans.
Do I really have to upload a video? If you don't believe it, then don't believe it.
not in BF3, Fermi dominates the game compared to that old revamped 5870 design.

stock-to-stock, the 570 is faster, there's too much evidence to support it, sorry. now if the 480 is a better overclocker than the 570, then you may have a valid argument based on overclocking ability... but not stock comparison.

Dude I already showed you; the 480 has 8 more ROPs, a larger memory BUS (bandwidth) and more VRAM. This is stock to stock difference.

BlackDog, you can spew out those differences, but it does not change the benchmark numbers of stock to stock. I've had this argument over and over again with neodata about processors. Just because a card has a larger memory bus doesn't make it faster. I'm sorry. Your statements about the hardware differences are correct, but your assumption that it makes it faster is wrong. You have to understand the architecture difference between the 480 & 570 to understand why it's inherently faster. Numbers don't lie.
Yes, I believe you have 6,000 on 3DMark, I don't believe that a stock 480 is faster than a stock 570, nearly every benchmark on the internet says differently, unless you're at absurd resolutions, where the extra 256MB of VRAM may help

Yeah I think the 1GB limit of my cards is holding me back. It maxes out. I saw online someone had a MSI 580 xtreme edition (one with 3GB of vram) and they were seeing it peaking at 1400-1600 at 1080p. Sooooo it seems to be a memory hog. Card with at least 1.5 GB I guess.

I just hate it when people come in here and spew out garbage about how their hardware is faster than anyone else because they overclocked it and can't admit that the newer generation hardware is faster, cheaper, and more efficient than theirs stock, out-of-the-box. I mean shit, that's why hardware review sites benchmark.
He must have missed my earlier post where it's a comparison of 570 (left) and 480 (right) stock out-of-the-box: http://www.tomshardware.com/charts/2011-gaming-graphics-charts/compare,2674.html?prod%5B4834%5D=on&prod%5B4832%5D=on
I'm not contesting his FPS anymore, at a 25% overclock on a 480, it's likely that he could be close to 50fps... I'm just saying my original assertion that if it were at stock speeds, it should be at the level of a single 570 or below.
Anyhow, I'll be back in this thread in about a month after MSI takes their damn sweet time RMA'ing my graphics card. Here's hoping I get it back before the official BF3 release. Yes, I'm still bitter, hence my ranting I'd imagine.

You should hold out for Kepler in Q1 2011. 28nm and entirely new architecture should be significantly faster than Fermi based cards (4xx/5xx series). 10/7/2011 6:12:47 PM |
BlackDog All American 15654 Posts user info edit post |
NVIDIA already announced Kepler is delayed, why would they compete with themselves? AMD has to bring a GPGPU to the table first. What NVIDIA will release is just a die shrink with some mild architecture adjustments. 10/7/2011 6:14:31 PM |
neodata686 All American 11577 Posts user info edit post |
Latest news says it's delayed from Q4 2011 to Q1 2012. Fermi is old. Kepler is supposed to be the next gen chip. Recent news has suggested as much as a 50% increase in games over Fermi not to mention a performance per watt increase of 3 to 4 times that of Fermi. That's a big deal in regard to overclocking and voltage requirements.

^I'm sure I'll be upgrading again in 6 months.... just needed something now. But it looks really promising.
BlackDog, I don't mean to make it personal at all, but I never said a 570 was faster than an OC'd 480 either. And nor did I have anything bad to say about the 480 either.
I'm just refuting this statement made by you, that's all. It's not about your graphics card setup at all, which is the only evidence you've posted, which isn't exactly a fair comparison considering it's OC'd.
Quote : | "Those benches are complete BS, the 480 is faster than the 570 in almost every game, always has been since they are almost identical." |

haha I know I just said not to do this, but with news it really doesn't matter the site as long as they have a source:
http://www.tomshardware.com/news/nvidia-gpu-kepler-fermi-update,13188.html
Quote : | "Ken Brown, a spokesman for Nvidia, told X-bit Labs that Kepler silicon will be available this year, but now it seems production of graphic cards will not happen until 2012. So far, we have been under the impression that Kepler cards could be arriving just in time for Christmas, even if Nvidia already had said at the International Supercomputing Conference in June that the new cards may be delayed by a month or two.
Kepler will be succeeding the Fermi architecture and use a 28 nm production process. There have been rumors that Nvidia is struggling with the 28 nm production and that manufacturing is causing the delay. Of course, Nvidia isn't commenting on the delay and no chip manufacturer would ever give a statement on yield issues anyway. However, Nvidia is under pressure of getting Kepler out on time and especially get to Kepler right. (The current Fermi architecture was delayed several times and had a less than perfect launch.)
According to information released by Nvidia so far, Kepler cards will triple the dual-precision floating point performance of Fermi and hit up to 6 dp GFlops, while its successor Maxwell (scheduled for a 2013 release) is expected to with almost 16 dp GFlops. These are big promises and Nvidia wouldn't want to miss them." |
Your article is in June, mine is in August.
BTW Fermi launched in March of 2010, you can hardly call that old compared to CPU releases.
Also Prospero I have read the white book on all Fermi GPUs and I know every single difference like why the 570 lacks 8 ROPs vs the 480, they changed the way the GPC is configured. I know the GF110 is more efficient than the GF100, if it wasn't NVIDIA would have been doing nothing since March of 2010 except changing names. However the optimizations were very small when it comes to actual FPS and ROPs are very important to AA.

Check the time difference between the GT200 and the GF100
June, 2008 to March, 2010
yes they made the GT200b but it was a small change, very small, mainly just a die shrink.
Fermi owners are in a perfect spot because Maxwell is going to kill Kepler by a lot and that is what Fermi owners will be upgrading to:

My problem wasn't lag or anything to do with the map. It was the problems with getting the game to fully recognize a controller. I tried 3 different ones including a PC 360 controller. I had better luck flying with my keyboard and mouse than I did with my game pads/joystick.
It was like it could only detect analog controls and during flight sometimes say roll would just stop working in one direction. I really hope they get this controller problem fixed by the RC. Flying is like half the reason I want the game.
The map it self is awesome, now they just need to fix the controls. 10/8/2011 12:50:23 AM |

It will be at least another 2 years before a native DX11 game comes out that puts Fermi towards the ground. Also I got my 480 through RMA process of my GTX 295
If you are going by the time line on that chart where is Kepler? I was going by the supposed performance increases, not the obviously old time line.
