I was looking for estimates of map sizes of the games. Here are some numbers

(in square miles)
GTA III 3
GTA VC 3-4
GTA SA 14 or more
GTA IV 6
GTA V 49

Also there is no guarantee that you'll see the entire map at the beginning of the game. Most of the GTA's before had sections of the map blocked off.
