If that SHP stalking shit was happening to someone I knew, I might try and get the car number and contact SHP, and also get in touch with the local PD about it
but of course, both agencies "won't be able to do anything since a crime has not actually been committed"
from the last page:

More likely? Sure, if you are going to speed, that is the lane to do it.

How do the police catch pawn shops who don't properly document things like electronics with serial numbers to ensure they aren't stolen? 6/15/2012 9:23:41 AM |

Do cops ever read the articles, reddit threads, watch the news, watch the youtube videos, or whatever else documents (perhaps fear mongers) the bad behavior of cops? When I listen to cops, I fail to believe they ever do. Too many "trust me" statements, that show that they're completely out of touch with the sentiment (ask me for examples from this thread if you want). I admit that I'm downright fearful of cops (rational or not) which comes directly from the media I've consumed. Do you have any appreciation, whatsoever, of this fact that you are in a position of being feared by a lot of the people out there?

Not really sure if there is a way. But most of the pawn shops I deal w/ will call us if they think something is fishy because they don't want the trouble.

I always keep my hands on the steering wheel, or otherwise in plain sight when I'm pulled. I do that because I think if I were a cop, that would be another level of reassurance for them while they are assessing the situation. I also never go digging in my glove compartment until he asks for my license and registration and can see what I'm digging through...
is this a helpful behavior? I've always just assumed it was. 6/16/2012 12:18:39 AM |

Best case is like previously mentioned. Carry your CCW permit with your license and registration and have it on top first thing so that it's the first thing in our conversation. Then hands on the steering wheel the whole time and everyone's at ease...
Like said before, legit CCW holders are 99% of the time squared away and they are the least of our worries.6/16/2012 10:12:30 AM |

I have, to this point, not had any problems or bad intereractions with LEO's when OC or CC.
The ones who came to investigate a break in at my old apartment came in to talk to the guy who was home when it occurred, and did not even blink at me sitting in my room at my desk cleaning my pistols, all of which were thankfully locked up in my safe when the thieves tossed the apartment.
The only folks I have trouble with when I open carry are store personnel who don't like OC, even when the store policy allows it, and then 2 folks who I have found who work a sporting goods counter at a Walmart but choose to refuse to ring me up for ammo sales if I am carrying. Gee, I walked in wearing a gun, and a spare magazine clearly in view on a belt, and want to buy 500 rounds of bulk box range ammo. That must make me a scary terrorist criminal mastermind 6/16/2012 11:29:44 PM |

Is it illegal to use the suicide lane (the both way left turn lane) as a speed-up and merge lane when making a left turn onto a road with said suicide lane?
I've heard that the call most police really hate to have to answer are domestic violence calls... that true?
You mentioned you have pulled people for texting, what about just plain talking on the cellphone (seems so less terrible than it did in the pre-texting days) 6/17/2012 3:41:09 AM |

Quote : | "I've heard that the call most police really hate to have to answer are domestic violence calls... that true?" |
Well yes and no. Domestic calls tend to be the most dangerous "routine" types of calls we respond to, and I hate to use that word because no call is really routine, but I mean that in the sense of a type of call we respond to regularly. Obviously something like an active shooter call is more dangerous, but those are generally few and far between. Domestics happen all the damn time. Statistically I think domestics and traffic stops are probably the two most dangerous activities a cop does on a daily basis, but even a suspicious person encounter can be dangerous.
We tend to not like domestics because its always some kind of Jerry Springer drama. Both people are pissed off, and the person who called expects us to solve years of issues in 20 minutes. Its annoying to give honest helpful advice to a victim about leaving an abusive situation, or getting a 50B (restraining order), and then responding the next day or even the next hour and seeing the same thing you already dealt with. Passions are always high with domestics, kids are often involved, child custody is often involved, and sometimes there is nothing we can do. If there is no PC for an arrest or if no crime has even occured, we cant force people to leave their own homes even if one party is demanding us to remove the other. We usually just ask someone to leave voluntarily until it calms down, unless there is PC to arrest someone. Also with domestics, sometimes the person who called the police can do an instant 180 as soon as you arrive or try to arrest the aggressor. All of a sudden they become lovey dovey and want you to leave their lover boy alone. The most annoying thing to me with domestics though is when you respond to the same damn house for the same damn problem over and over again. Just having to be involved in other people drama can be annoying by itself. However, there are times when you can legitamately help someone or stop an assault, and that makes you feel good.
If you want to know the type of call that annoys me personally the most, just out of sheer stupidity, it is responding to noise complaints or fireworks complaints on the 4th of July or at 12am on New years eve.6/17/2012 4:27:37 AM |

Id like to clear this up. Police calls are prioritized as they are recieved by 911. Every call is assigned a priority number. Most CAD sytems (computer aided dispatch) assign calls a number between 0-9. 0 is the highest priority and 9 is a person calling about their neighbors dog barking loudly three weeks ago. A priority 0 call almost always requires a lights and siren emergency response, and a 0 pretty much means a crime in progress. Sometimes a 1 priority can justify an emergency response depending on the situation and nature of the call. Just because a call like a serious 1 or 2 may not justify an emergency response, it still may require the officers to get there as quick as possible. A 1 or 2 could be a heated domestic that hasnt turned into an assualt in progress yet. Sometimes it is nessecary for a cop to speed to get to an important call quickly, and even with an emergency response most cops will cut lights n sirens a few miles out in order to try a stealthier approach. Sometimes we will blue light and siren through a stop light if it is going to take several minutes in order to cut down a response time to a 1 or 2 call. All of our times are recorded and logged, from the time the 911 operator logs and enters the call, to the time it is dispatched, to the time the first unit arrives on scene, so we do try to cut down response times to priority calls.
Do some cops abuse this, yeah maybe, but generally speaking an officer driving fast without lights on is responding to a call or to assist another officer. My personal belief is that driving fast during normal patrol with no where to go is pointless, it doesnt make the 12 hours pass any quicker, and you generally miss things as you pass. I usually drive slow as hell when Im just riding around.6/17/2012 5:29:35 AM |

That reminds me, in NC, are you allowed to make a right on red arrow? I asked some police officers about it before and they were unsure about their answer.
When you're on the beltline and get off at 298A to head South on 70, there are two lanes there which go to red arrows. People, including myself, always go. But one time there was a cop parked on the grass there and not a single person went. When I lived in MA, right on red arrows were illegal, whereas right on solid reds were fine, so long as there wasn't a sign saying otherwise. Cops aren't usually sitting there, but occasionally there are undercovers in the line waiting to turn, and I don't want to get pulled for something stupid like that. 6/17/2012 6:32:53 AM |

Unless there is a sign saying otherwise
I hate the signs with time frames on them. Then I'm sitting there reading the rules, confirming day & time before I know if I can go
Question: have you ever pulled an attractive woman over for something you would have let slide so you could get a closer look?
Another question: what level of joking around do you personally tolerate? I was pulled in Louisiana for crossing over the line into the next lane for a hot second. I was driving a rental car w really loose steering. I got pulled & explained what happened & that I was headed to the airport. Normally I wouldn't joke w an officer but I made a comment along the lines of "I promise I haven't been drinking daiquiris" it's also important to note that it was 2pm & drive through daiquiri shops are prominent in the state. He let me go without a ticket or warning.
