"'Dark Knight' Shooting: In Gesture of Sympathy, Studios May Not Report Box Office Grosses This Weekend

Hollywood is rallying together in the wake of the shooting that left at least 12 dead inside a midnight screening of "The Dark Knight Rises."

There could be no box office reporting this weekend for any film as Hollywood studios navigate the aftermath of the Colorado theater massacre that has left a dozen moviegoers dead and dozens injured.

Warner Bros. said late Friday afternoon that it wouldn't report weekend grosses for The Dark Knight Rises out of respect for the victims of the shooting, which occurred during a midnight screening of the film in the Denver suburb of Aurora.

Throughout the evening, other studios began indicating they would refrain from reporting grosses as well over the weekend. Ditto for Rentrak, the service that collects box office data from theater owners across the country."

Why not donate a portion of proceeds to a victims' fund or charity?

The studios don't have any money because of all the internet pirates.

Probably because they're about to be served with lawsuits by everyone even tangentially affected by the massacre.

What exactly are the studios going to be sued for? I'm not sure they are liable for anything.

I'm sure there will be the usual 'violent media content makes people do bad things!' hysteria and associated lawsuits, but the studios will only have to pay whatever it costs for their lawyer to show up in court and say *cough*bullshit*cough*.

The theater should be legitimately worried about lawsuits. I hope they have a good insurance policy. I wouldn't be suprised to see the shooter's parents sued as well.

I don't necessarily expect the studio to do anything (they're certainly not responsible), but as far as token gestures go, this is just shit. Chic-fil-a provided free meals to emergency personnel. Hollywood sits on its weekend box office report.

What liability would the parents have for the actions of their adult son?

Same for the theater? What reasonable precautions could they have taken to stop this guy?

This is horrible, but it doesn't seem like there is much room for lawsuits.

None. He is an adult.
None

Why should there be lawsuits? This man had a plan and he would find a way to kill somehow and some way. The blame for this falls squarely on him. Why do you always look to blame something else?

I guess TDKR is not doing that great if they don't want to tell its opening numbers. You know they would be screaming those numbers if it was out pacing Avengers.

^^He commented earlier that he didn't regret shooting Trayvon because it was "God's plan."

So I'm wondering if he believes the same thing about this shooting.

Damn, this shit is 7 pages

Was anyone stupid enough to say that gun control helped him perpetrate the crime, because if armed people were in the audience, they could have stopped him before he killed all those people?

I'd search, but I'm lazy.

Yes if only people with pistols had been in the smoked out, dark theater this would have surely stopped after the first shot. We all know that a pistol beats out a AR-15

if there were multiple armed people shooting, they would have been shooting at each other, and nobody would have known who the assailant was.

There could have been mad more deaths yo, with everyone shooting at each other.

^^ It would at least attract the killer's attention from shooting other people. And people are easy to recognize who is the killer.

in a dark theater with a recent gas/smoke grenade? They would be able to tell which shots are coming from the "killer?"

I don't care if a navy seal & green beret is in the audience. If a guy stands up mid movie tosses a smoke grenade and starts shooting there ain't shit you can do buy die honorably or run like a bitch

Let me explain this. Midnight shows are usually for young people. If they have kids, the kids can't be old.

Young parents usually are not fully matured. So it's not surprised to see them do something like this.

when my daughter was 3 she was fully capable of sitting in a movie theater for 2 hours without disturbing others, including late showings. she's 4 now, and i have no problem with letting her watch limited amounts of select violent material. she watches animated batman and spiderman from time to time. and yes, the dark knight is particularly violent and i wouldn't make a regular occasion of letting a 6 year old of mine watch something that violent, but of my friends with 6 year olds, i would see no problem with many of them being mature enough to watch a violent movie on a special occasion in the presence of an adult.

[Edited on July 21, 2012 at 7:37 PM. Reason : i agree though no way i would take a 3 mo old to that movie]

I didn't get into the parenting discussions because I'm not a parent, but it seems ridiculous that you'd blame a parent for bringing a 6 year old to a fucking BATMAN movie. When I was 6, on a few occasions I know I was out at mindnight for special occasions. Actually, it happened often enough while I was very young because my birthday is New Year's day and my family went to family New Years parties.

i'm not going to get in a parenting pissing match, but the dark knight rises is completely different from spiderman and batman cartoons.

and i also disagree thoroughly with the idea that it's okay to take them to a midnight showing.

but this is purely my opinion.

No more world ending than if you were an adult at this movie theater.

FWIW, Bulletproof Vest != Invincibility. It's still gonna hurt like hell getting shot (depending on caliber of course) and the attacker could still suffer from broken/cracked ribs, internal bleeding, ruptured spleen or other organs, etc. That in itself may cause the attacker to flee or allow others to subdue/restrain the attacker.

it's a 6 year old, not a 6 month old. you're being fucking ridiculous. if you don't want to, fine. But ridiculing and scrutinizing another parent for taking their 6 year old somewhere at midnight isn't appropriate.

SO? A bunch or people would be BLINDLY shooting, and nobody would know who the real attacker was. If other people shot back at god knows where, the situation could have escalated into something much worse.
