paying 65/month for my sprint plan .I love the American made moto x, the price and idea of republic just can't get with them only having ONE device to choose from (defy reviews are awful) 1/18/2014 12:28:58 AM |

I'm loving my MotoX, but compared to the DefyXT almost any modern phone would be better though. The DefyXT served it's purpose for me so I could pay $19/mon for over a year. 1/18/2014 7:01:46 AM |

Yea the Defy was fine for the 3 months that I had it. I was able to pay $19/month and save up for the X. While the price point of the X was expensive, I have had no regrets. In the 7 months i've been with republic, the saving I've had vs what I was paying with Verizon has already paid for the X phone. I have no regrets what-so-ever.
Republic has made it pretty clear they will have 3 phones to offer (not including the Defy). I'm surprised we dont have atleast a 2nd one by now (I would imagine the Moto G). Once they fulfill that promise, I see their subscriber number jump dramatically. 1/18/2014 1:11:37 PM |

there are two main reasons the defy reviews are completely irrelevant:
1.) it was a crappy phone by itself and has no bearing on the moto x or RW 2.) related to #1, RW was in beta and limited in what they could modify/access with the defy and as such, have much more control over the moto x (and are no longer in beta)1/18/2014 9:17:07 PM |

OK, possible stupid question, but how do you reorder your bookmarks in Chrome on the MotoX? The wife said she could do it on the DefyXT browser. 1/23/2014 9:58:50 AM |

welcome to the family.
I wonder when we can expect the next phones(s) to be announced/released. I've got several people sold on the idea of Republic, but not on the $299 price tag. Plus most all of them are in 3G areas, so paying more for a 4G phone is a tough sell. The Moto G would be perfect for this, if only they'd announce it! 2/1/2014 12:56:21 PM |

Everything is all good. Motorola has always operated total independent of Google. Google secured patents by buying Motorola and just sold part of them. See the video below:

^^^ I sold my friend on the moto x by having him look at his annual cell phone cost.
He was buyin $10 burner/disposable phones which was costing him less than a regular cell carrier, but more than what RW is offering. I showed him the math and how after exactly a year, he would start saving money. Sure the initial cost is high, however I told him it's an investment to saving money. He's able to start saving money (now) each month and enjoy awesome features that his flip phone couldn't conviniently do, such as GPS mapping, internet browsing, checking email, and much more. He was sold on it and bought it after thinking about it for 5 minutes. 2/2/2014 1:01:41 AM |

I also work with a few people who have gone republic (our department head's son actually works for them i found out recently!) 2/5/2014 2:05:31 PM |

I don't know why I waited so long to get the Moto X.
This phone is incredible. Granted, the only smart phones I've owned are the Samsung Galaxy S and the Defy XT was a slight downgrade from the nearly 4 year old Galaxy S, but good lord the Moto X is beyond fantastic!

To those of you on the $25 plan, what's your total after taxes and fees? 2/7/2014 12:13:23 AM |

Im on the $25, but I get 10% off because I was part of the beta crowd. So I pay $22.50, which is about $26.xx with tax. I don't have an exact figure yet because it's the first month and the service+tax is on the same purchase order as the phone. I'd say it's about $30.xx if you don't get the 10% Beta tester discount. 2/7/2014 12:44:12 AM |

Ok, someone tell me how stable and usable is the signal/service for RW.
1) In the city 2) On interstates 3) On major roads 4) On back roads 5) In small towns
Has anyone traveled long distance with it?
Can you stream music well?
Thanks! 2/7/2014 11:17:49 AM |

It's Sprint so YMMV. Why not just try it? They offer a 30 day trial and refund the phone and plan cost for that month so you're only out $10 for the shipping if it doesn't work. 2/7/2014 11:26:45 AM |

Yeah, those questions could vary wildly based on the area of the country you're in. I'd just pull up a Sprint coverage map of where you spend most of your time and go from there. Backroads and small towns are probably going to be spotty, but they are for nearly every network. 2/7/2014 11:29:09 AM |

Roaming call and text is free. IIRC with data there is a 100MB cap on roaming data. So as long as you are not stuck on a weak Sprint tower, you should be as good as any other carrier. At least in theory that is the idea. 2/7/2014 4:21:14 PM |

So, my only reservation about going Republic Wireless is on the maybe three days a month where I want GPS navigation to get somewhere. Even Verizon can be shitty about losing signal on the roads, so I'm nervous that Sprint towers will fuck me and my inability to learn roads right in the rear.
BUT I guess I could just use Gmaps instead of Navigation. I'm pretty sure Gmaps doesn't need an active GPS signal. And anyway, 99% of my usage is just standard web browsing at home and at work. 2/14/2014 12:26:25 PM |

Haven't had any issues with Google Nav while going through poor/no signal areas. GPS also seems to hold signal better than my Galaxy S3. Only issue is you're out of luck if you miss a turn and need it to reroute since that doesn't work without a data signal. 2/14/2014 12:44:46 PM |
KRUZNBY All American 2655 Posts user info edit post |
You can use one of the GPS programs that have the maps on the phone rather than being downloaded constantly. Alternatively you could upgrade to the 3G plan for a few days and then downgrade back. Navigation is 1000x better on the MotoX than it was on the Defy. It was basically not usable on the Defy. 2/14/2014 2:25:37 PM |

so you can actually now save your google maps for offline use. I saw an article online that was talking about it and thought it was bs, but decided to try it. And it actually works
Basically you just get the area you want to save on your screen (i did all of Raleigh), and then in the search bar type "ok maps", and it will download to your cache the maps on your screen for offline use.
Mind blown

and i use the navigation/maps feature on my MotoX extensively whenever i go outside of the city limits... even when i already know where i'm going just because i'm a map nerd, and i've never run into an issue with signal loss messing up my routes.

I could be totally wrong on this, and if I am, please correct me.
I'm under the impression that once you get a route set up with google maps, your direct route (as well as primary detour routes along your primary route) are saved temporarily so that in case you enter a zone without service, you're GPS will still function, similar to caching maps for future offline use. So if you start your route while in a serviced area, you'll be fine for the remainder of the trip as it's temporarily stored in phone.

Quite right. Download the route, then turn off data, Google maps will navigate you there without it. This allows WiFi only devices with GPS to be used for navigation. 2/15/2014 6:48:38 AM |

I am trying to get my mom to sign up for this service. She uses Verizon prepaid right now with a dumbphone. She is very happy with the coverage she gets with Verizon and is reluctant to change. How would this service compare to Verizon? She drives up to DC to visit us on 29. Would she get sufficient coverage there? 2/19/2014 4:51:57 PM |

Ran into my first problem with the new phone today. Left my phone at home today and when I got back from class, all my new messages were no visible in messenger. Only the messages from yesterday were there. Any new messages would appear in my notifications in the top, along with the first few words, but nothing appeared in the conversations, and no new conversations and begun. Had to delete my old convos with my Mom and GF to get new messages to appear. Even then, the ones sent in the meantime never appeared.
Also, where do you guys get ringtones from? 3/3/2014 8:15:28 PM |
dbhawley All American 3339 Posts user info edit post |
Interesting, I havent ever had any issues like that before. Maybe in message setting check the box saying 'delete old messages when limited are met' might help? You could also put in a help ticket.
And for ringtones, I either download them, make my own using phonezoo, or use the app Zedge. 3/4/2014 11:46:45 AM |

Unless I missed a setting, or things have changed in 3 years, when I was traveling through the mountains and lost my data signal (still had satellite), I lost my nav via gmaps. It was not fun.3/4/2014 11:56:50 AM |

^^ I thought of that, but these were new messages, not old ones. Not only that, but the message limit is set to 1000. I was nowhere near that.
