Quote :
"McCrory staff demanding payment for public records

RALEIGH, N.C. — As a candidate, Pat McCrory pledged a transparent and accountable government. But now that he is governor, those seeking access to public records are often met with long delays and unprecedented demands for payment."

Quote :
"Among the state agencies that has left some records requests pending for months and demanded hundreds of dollars in payments is the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services. The agency has been under fire in recent months for hiring former political staffers at high salaries for jobs in areas for which they have little experience, huge payments to politically connected contractors and botched roll-outs of computer systems for processing Medicaid claims and food stamp applications. Those issues came to light, in large part, through public records."

I'm in favor of a reasonable fee; one that restricts access to amateurs but that professional journalists can afford if they have reason enough to do so. Printing public records just waste trees. Why do you hate the environment?

i'm fine with it as long as it a 2 tiered plan. you print vs the department prints. there should be a substantial discount if they mail you a pdf

Gawd, McCrory just keeps getting hammered at DHHS (I didn't think it could get worse but it just keeps getting shittier). How long till he starts throwing other people under the bus ( I'm guessing late 2015, before his re-election)

AG: Checks to NC pols came from illegal gambling
http://www.wral.com/ag-checks-to-nc-pols-came-from-illegal-gambling/13250203/
Quote :
"Court filings reviewed by The Associated Press show $1 million of that forfeited money came from a checking account in the name of the Chase Burns Trust — the same account used to send political donations to the campaigns of North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory, state House Speaker Thom Tillis and Senate leader Phil Berger, among others.

"There are severe and sustained consequences for breaking the law in Oklahoma, and I hope this sends a message to anyone considering profiting from illegal gambling," Pruitt said when announcing the seizure. "I appreciate the cooperation of the State of Florida and the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation. With their assistance, we were able to secure criminal and civil charges for these individuals and shut down their illegal gaming and money laundering activities."

The AP reported in April that the donations to North Carolina politicians from Burns may have violated state laws prohibiting corporate money from being used to "directly or indirectly" fund political campaigns."

Here's the new schedule:

Teachers will be making starting salary for tens years.

Note that the "raise" column is relative to the 2012 schedule. Here's the 2010 schedule, which had teachers making over $35k by their 5th year:

this is a slap in the face to all of the teachers who have been "toughing it out" for the better part of a decade.

Do teachers in the real world make that little or are there other modifiers that normally get thrown in (grant money from other sources, schools with more need, etc)?

that's pretty realistic... some counties give a supplement (like wake) but it's taxed as a bonus and doesn't add that much.

I work with a couple former teachers who were pretty insulted by the plan, what's the consensus among current teachers? I imagine new teachers are excited about the pay raise and experienced teachers pretty insulted?

very strange distribution of raises... without any other details i could certainly understand the older teachers being upset. are there other factors like retirement benefits/etc that might explain that cliff?

Right, so you decided to value family over pay. At some point if you don't like being lied to about pay increases then you can certainly do something about it by voting with your feet.

^^^^ are you 12 years old?

There's way more involved in a decision like that than merely pay. The connection to "family" isn't just for sentimental reasons. If you have kids, for example, family can be a significant source of free or very cheap babysitting (which can be up to $10k + per year of expenditures). You also have to consider families with inheritances, moving away can compromise any access you have to accumulated family wealth. "free" houses, cars, land, etc. isn't a trivial thing to look past. Being in an area where you have accumulated friends and connections (that could lead to new jobs or whatever) is also important. Not to mention that in a country of 300,000,000 people, it's unreasonable to just tell everyone to get up and move for every little thing. Plus, college education is really cheap in NC compared to other places.

It's in the public good too to fight for better, more fair pay scales, and the people best equipped for this fight are the ones affected.

in 99% of situations, telling people to just leave and move somewhere else is just dumb and childish.

I didn't say everyone in the country to move. We are talking about the 100,000 NC public school teachers that are free to move to another State for higher pay.

Let's not ideology take the place of fact. At some point when enough good people leave and if NC really does take a step down the rankings then we'll know how much of a failure the McCrory regime has been regarding education.

This is your argument against wage increases for teachers? Just pick up and move? Do you have any idea what impacts that will have? I really can't understand conservative logic anymore.

Let's just wait to see how bad things can get before "we realize" there's a problem? BRILLIANT!

**looks at current NC education stats.... problem with NC education realized** next plan, please.

haha libtards. So "no" to law enforcement because concealed carry was improved? hahaha. I can tell you that every. single. LEO I have come across while carrying could not have cared less that I was carrying. LEOs, for the most part, don't care about CCers. They just f'in don't.

To be fair, it was a "no" to some LEOs as a lobbying group- the NC Association of Chiefs of Police was against the law.

(I said "some" because the N.C. Sheriff's Association supported it)

purchase permits were repealed?
they were opposed to the entire thing and were "disappointed when it passed

http://wfae.org/post/nc-explainer-gun-legislation
Quote :
"And the association representing police chiefs in North Carolina is also concerned about that. Here's the president of the association, Apex Police Chief John Letteney:

"In our communities, one of the highest volume crimes is break-ins to vehicles," Letteney said. "When people know that there could likely be firearms locked in vehicles on campus, we're concerned that there may be an increase in thefts, and then those guns would now be in the hands of criminals."

Chief Letteney said police are also concerned about people bringing guns to bars. He put it pretty simply: firearms and alcohol don't mix. Representative Schaffer agreed, and she said the legislation makes it clear you're not allowed to drink if you're carrying a gun."

i know it wasn't repealed, yet they were still opposed to the bill and publicly cited other parts they were against.

but no, you're right, its a conspiracy by the liberal media (who in the same story reported on other LEO agencies who supported the bill)
