Got about $20M in cap space coming with the raise in the overall cap and Pitkanen's contract coming up. I don't think Joni's ever coming back(I was at that game, it was AWFUL) and definitely not for the money he was getting. Figure Tlusty, Loktinov, Gerbe, Hainsey, and Bellemore get re-signed. Peters will get re-signed if Ward gets traded. Every other FA is either old or terrible or both.
I think they will move Ward and he'll benefit greatly from a change of scenery. Don't see any of the other big-money guys moving though. The Staals could only be moved together. Semin showed this season that when you can motivate him he's an elite player. And if they even considered moving Jeff, the fanbase would revolt. 4/18/2014 1:09:16 PM |

So moving on, who are our draft prospects? Are we ever going to draft a defenseman in the first round? 4/28/2014 12:49:57 PM |

2011- Ryan Murphy 2005- Jack Johnson 2001- Igor Knayzev 1999- David Tanabe 1997- Nikos Tselios
In 16 drafts, the Canes have picked 5 D, 8 F, and 1 G. 2 years they had no first round pick. Granted most of those above d-men are trash, but the ratio of defensemen:forwards picked in the first round is in line with amount of each on a roster.4/28/2014 2:20:30 PM |
V0LC0M All American 21263 Posts user info edit post |
I completely forgot about Murphy in the first round. Jack Johnson was the last one I could remember. Other than Tanabe, never heard of any of those guys you listed.
I just feel like our defense needs a bit of adjustment. I like Hainsey, Sekera, and Faulk but that's about it. We're 19th in the NHL in GA and I don't attribute that to our goalie situation this year. Our power play is clearly the thing that needs the most work but they haven't been able to fix that in 3 years. 4/30/2014 1:05:55 PM |
Dammit100 All American 17605 Posts user info edit post |
Never hearing of Knayzev or Tselios is no fault of yours. They played a combined TWO nhl games. 4/30/2014 2:50:58 PM |
fenway All American 3135 Posts user info edit post |
Wasn't Tselios a cousin of Chris Chelios? Pretty sure I heard about that connection back during the '02 run.
The Canes have drafted defensemen before (although the large majority haven't panned out), but my biggest problem is them not spending money on defense. I was a huge fan up until about 2-3 years ago and haven't paid much attention to them over that time period (lots of reasons why), but I don't get the logic behind big money contacts being given to J. Staal & Semin when their blue line has been a weird collection of offensive minded defensemen and journey-men bottom pairing guys. I'm hoping Francis can turn it around, but the team seems pretty financially strapped to the big money guys they have now for a pretty decent time going forward. 4/30/2014 3:31:50 PM |

so who are our first round draft targets?
This site has Jake Virtanen listed as our pick - http://www.mynhldraft.com/2014/NHL-Draft-Profiles/Jake-Virtanen
http://www.mynhldraft.com/NHL-Mock-Draft/
Jake Virtanen Ht/Wt: 6' 1"/190 lbs Position: C/LW Team: Calgary (WHL)
Speed – Big man speed with acceleration, agility, balance. Won the 30 metre sprint, backward and forward, at the CHL Top Prospects game.
Shot – Big gun, quick finger, hits target, penetrates net.
Power forward – Jake Virtanen has the size, skating, drive and physicality teams look for in a power forward – Jake is probably the purest power forward in the draft.
Improvements to make – Judging by his performance in January (13 goals and 20 points in 14 games), Jake has already come a long way. However, he should continue to work on using his teammates better, push for excellence in his defensive work and exert his physicality on a constant basis to win puck battles.
Draft placement – Most have Jake at or around the top 10 now but if he continues to produce at or improve upon his January pace he could go significantly higher because his size and physical skills are as elite as just about anyone in the draft.
Profile from: Eldon MacDonald and Chris Ralph of The Hockey Writers - updated Feb. 26th

The last thing we need is an injury prone player however this kid is huge and plays with a lot grit. Could be nice to see some physicality on the Canes again.

Can't complain. Guy had plenty of chances and showed little outside of a short streak after he got the job and the hot streak the top line had last year.
Hopefully this is a sign that Francis doesn't buy that "patience" nonsense Karmanos was spewing. 5/5/2014 11:20:40 AM |

Just make Brind'Amour the head workout guru, or give him a useless title and pay him handsomely like Stillman and Wesley.
I fully expect we'll get a long drawn out coaching search that will result in them saying they found the best candidate, and it will be Jeff Daniels. Then I will unload most of my Canes gear on ebay/craigslist, burn what can't be sold, and be completely done with any emotional investment in this franchise. 5/5/2014 2:29:50 PM |

I am with a few of you on the board....emotionally checked out. I also can't bring myself to get rid of my gear.
I saw a list of names of coaches the Canes may consider and three of them stick out at me... Kevin Dineen, Davis Payne and Barry Trotz. Payne sticks out because he has ties to the Carolinas both playing and coaching in the ECHL for 3 or 4 of the teams in the Carolinas. 5/6/2014 10:34:32 AM |
Sweden All American 12295 Posts user info edit post |
The idea of Barry Trotz is intriguing to me. He got teams completely devoid of any offensive talent whatsoever into the playoffs in the West. If he could come in here and tighten up our defense and have actual offensive skill to work with, I don't see any reason we couldn't be in the playoffs at least twice as often as we are now.
Payne seems like a hire that would be made after better candidates turned down the job. Dineen seems like a hire that would be made by JR because he has Whaler/Cane ties already, and I'm hoping Francis wants to distance himself from shit like that with his first move as a GM.
I wouldn't necessarily be upset at any of the 3. As long as Tortorella or Jeff Daniels isn't the coach next season, I'll have some temporary optimism for the future of the team.
