It's basically a read option although I'm not sure I've ever seen a handoff under Doeren

Our defense is horrible. We are playing soft prevent all game. I'd rather see us blitzing and taking risks as it might lead to a turnover or two. The ACC teams are going to score 50 plus on us. 9/6/2014 9:23:14 PM |

Yes. Usually the QB set up as a WR or something. It became pretty popular, IIRC, with the Miami Dolphins back 6, or so, years ago. Admittedly, I really don't understand it much. But you snap the ball directly to the RB...from there he obviously has the ability to pass, hand off, run, etc.

That's kinda my point. I understand it in theory. But given how it's generally use...snap to RB and he carries it, I don't know that I really get it. Like, I understand how it should work. I just don't see it as a viable offense for more than a handful of plays each games.9/6/2014 9:27:50 PM |

Wasn't pretty, but a win is a win. Offense was really good after the 1st Q and was nearly perfect in the 2nd half. Gotta do something about the defense though. ODU and GSU are both high powered offenses in their leagues, but we shouldn't be giving up 500 yards to them. 9/6/2014 9:40:20 PM |

^^^^The idea is that the defense has to have the personnel to combat a normal offense, then you essentially take a defender out of the box when you run the QB out wide so you have better numbers for the run

Right. But at that point the defense knows it's either a direct snap to the runner or a handoff. Sure, it could be a pass, but that's unlikely. So is it that much of an advantage? It's basically a formation that can work a couple of times a game...which is. But that's it9/6/2014 9:45:06 PM |
jocristian All American 7527 Posts user info edit post |
Obviously there is a reason it's a gadget offense and noone uses it full time. But the advantage is at the huddle, they don't know what it could be. When the QB runs out wide--especially if you have an athletic QB like we do--then they have to have a defender out there to cover him even if it's a slight possibility that he will get thrown to.
I remember watching one of the game tape breakdown shows back when the dolphins were using it alot and having one less player in the box makes a big difference in the blocking schemes. 9/6/2014 9:50:42 PM |

Once again, Charlotte sports gets shitted on by the national narrative.
The Panthers and Deangelo Williams singlehandedly beat the Falcons with the Wildcat. Then Miami gets the props for it cause Ronnie and Ricky fucked with it a year or two later.9/6/2014 9:50:53 PM |

Glad we won, hope the defense improves, not sure about running unc's crappy 4-2-5 defense. Why did we not have a punt returner on the field at the beginning of the 4th quarter. The punt just sat there for a while b/c no State player was anywhere to be found. 9/6/2014 10:04:20 PM |
TreeTwista10 minisoldr 148450 Posts user info edit post |
PSA to all:
4-2-5 just means you run the nickel defense as a base as opposed to a 4-3 or 3-4 like most teams
3-3-5 is another variation of the nickel. 4-2-5 means 4 defensive linemen, 2 linebackers, 5 defensive backs. meant to defend the pass, which we'll have to do against plenty of teams in a pass-happy league.
3-3-5 is 3 d-linemen, 3 linebackers, 5 d-backs. similar strategy.
this isn't directed at anyone personally...just remember some tarholes fans a couple years ago being like 'OMG FEDORA INVENTED THIS NEW DEFENSE'...no...it's called the Nickel because you add a 5th defensive back by removing a linebacker 9/6/2014 10:07:20 PM |

^^thats a vast oversimplification of the 4-2-5. And someone DID create that scheme, just not Fedora. I think it was Gary Patterson. 9/6/2014 10:23:15 PM |
TreeTwista10 minisoldr 148450 Posts user info edit post |
The Nickel was around way the fuck before Gary Patterson
And yeah my explanation is oversimplified. But it's accurate. Sportswriters and UNC fans wanted to act like it was some new shit when it's been around since before 99% of TWWers were born

But nickel just mean 5 dbacks, as you said. 4-2-5 is a very specific scheme that values a certain type of player and coverage. 9/6/2014 10:31:39 PM |
TreeTwista10 minisoldr 148450 Posts user info edit post |
4-2-5 and 3-3-5 are 99% of nickel defenses, with 4-2-5 being more popular than 3-3-5. It's not that specific. It's basically just taking a 4-3 and replacing a linebacker with a corner or safety. It's nothing new.
I don't think we're really disagreeing. But it's been around for decades. Not some Fedora special like Holes fans think
