Was catching up on my Indycar races last night due to vacation, so am watching the race from Mid-Ohio. The Rahals are from pretty nearby, and Graham was wearing an Ohio State helmet and gloves. After hearing this fact repeated by the announcers en route to Graham's win at his home track, here's the conversation with my Purdue graduate wife:

Wife: "Who is that?"
Me: "Graham Rahal."
Wife: "I hate him."

Graham has finally figured it out this year. He had a Honda which was the 2nd engine in comparison to Chevrolet, has won twice, and with 2 races left at Pocono and Sonoma is only 9 points back of Montoya for the Championship.

^yep, you can move people if you dont turn them on the last lap

^^^ after seeing driver comments about the high drag package you are correct. you can get a draft down the straights but cant do anything with it in the turns. carl edwards says to just take the splitter and spoiler completely off and go race. sounds good to me

^^^^carls about right. The Kentucky race where they basically had no spoiler was the best race of the season. Looking forward to Darlington when they bring that package back around.

Indycar and Formula One have both been looking at canopies. F1 released a canopy design and reaction to it was largely negative IIRC. Indycar have leaned towards due doing a raised windshield of sorts in the next car design (around 2018) in front of the driver that would protect from the type of accident James Hinchcliffe suffered at Indianapolis last year and Felipe Massa suffered in F1 some years ago. I don't know if it would've made a difference in Wilson's wreck yesterday.

^ He's done that before for some short-track racers critically injured at events he was at. I know he did it once at the Chili Bowl.

part of the problem is the aero kits make way too much debris when crashed. if it was up to me they would just take the wings off. something like this:

I've been banging my head into a wall for years saying the wings should be removed. The old drivers if you ask them say "increase horsepower, reduce downforce" to improve racing. The people in charge and the car companies don't listen. They went to twin-turbocharged engines that only two engine manufacturers will make and in the process knocked out every independent engine builder so they could make it an elite club instead of democratizing the sport.

I half thought about entering a car design for the next car design Indycar has to make a political point. I have my P.E. license so I can kind of make it look like I have engineering credentials to do it. (I did co-design a sportscar chassis before to LMP2 rules for a company.) I know they won't pick me but my overriding desire will be to design a simpler car that costs a fraction of the current car while being far more open to engine designs to shame everyone involved.

The end of this Xfinity race at Road America is pretty disgraceful. Drivers are trying to save fuel late and turning off the cars to coast, and a few times now the battery wouldn't restart the car leaving cars stopped on track - this at probably the worst circuit in the country to have a caution when it is 4 miles around.

Never saw this mentioned here, but Michael Waltrip Racing will shutdown at the end of 2015.

i thought he did a pretty good job considering he's been out of it for so long. it was obvious he hasn't been following NASCAR as close as regular commentators do, but he still did fine.

hell, anything is better than kyle petty trying to give us the "driver's perspective" or rick allen trying to squeeze excitement into a boring race simply by shouting.

Big fan of Ken Squier. One bad thing about CBS losing their partial schedule back in the day.

can someone tell the NBC Sports TV director on-site that posting fastest lap speed beneath the driver's name as they go through the running order is meaningless at a track like Talladega?

^understatement

1. france said he wanted game 7 moments. well he got game 7 and 8 with an extra GWC

2. NBC refused to show a replay that showed were the 88/22 were when the lights came on. the one they showed was a BS graphic because lights were NOT lit up on the fence

3. the 4 obviously spun the 6 intentionally on 2nd i mean only GWC attempt, should have been given a penalty

4. parts were seized from the SHR cars the day before the race. they should have announced if there will be a penalty for that before the race starts and not wait until tuesday

The thing that was so screwed up of determining who won the race between Logano and Dale Jr. was it was on a restart at a restrictor plate race where they're both side-by-side and not moving relative to the other, and since it was the last green-white-checkered start, they waited a few seconds to throw the caution that froze the field. So if they did it 2 seconds earlier or 2 seconds later, it could've changed who won the race, so they literally picked the winner because they hesitated to throw the caution. Now, if you're cynical, you would say they would wait until Junior took the lead and then throw it, but that's why their whole notion of how to end these races with their caution rules is so screwed up, especially at the restrictor plate tracks.

And yes, he intentionally spun the guy.
