I guess you're not a numbers guy? It's crazy what people will hold onto in spite overwhelmingly contradictory evidence. But 45% of this country are creationists, so why am I surprised? I guess I assume most people on here got educated, probably advanced science and math along the way.

Along these lines, I was reading something interesting about how we hold on to meaning in our lives; i.e. That when traditional sources of meaning deteriorate, we actually double down (think climate deniers, Darwin deniers, etc) because it's such a radical shift for humans to lose a source of meaning. It's the threatened extinction of a meme, but much more than that, it's the very anchoring for a human consciousness from disillusionment.

There are major cultural differences between the countries those statistics took place in and ours. And major socioeconomic differences.

I'm actually not surprised that we are talking about guns more than the major issue of systemic racism and poverty that has lead to the vast majority of our "gun violence" problem.

I'd argue this is far different than an event like Sandy Hook. That was a true case of mental illness. This is a kid who was indoctrinated by quite a bit of hate in TV, in history and on the internet. I think it's useful in this case to understand where and how he came by these opinions.

Certainly there should not be limitations to what people can talk about or post about but its important to know that these opinions do have consequences and it is the real world out there.
