One touch against BC last year. No rushing attempts. Only 3 targets in the passing game. Yeah, that's totally on the defense and not on the offensive coordinator. You get your best player the ball. The last half of last season Drinkwitz basically forgot about our best player.

^That's literally one game.

On the season Samuels averaged 6.8 touches per game. There were 5 games after the BC game. His number of touches per game were: 7, 9, 6, 5, 8. The average over those 5 games was 7 touches per game, which was higher than his average on the season.

Now look at production. Before the BC game(7 games), he had 52 touches for 7 total TDs. After the BC game he had 35 touches for 7 total TDs(one passing).

You picked the ONE anomaly on his season, his usage didn't drop off down the stretch at all.

Canada was the one that would randomly go away from Samuels, Drink didn't do that at all.

He also had tons less touches last year compare to his sophomore year (121 to 88.). That alone says he was underutilized.

He is/was our best player. He should be getting at least 10 touches a game. During the three game Clemson, Louisville, BC stretch last year he had 1 carry. 1. There is no reason for that.

Ima go out on a limb and say our 1200 yard rusher had more impact on Jsams touches than Drink's poor memory. But hate let the irrational hate flow through you

^^^ also the first half of the season featured all of our shitty OOC opponents.

he had 8 catches for 100 yards against clemson, possibly the best defense he'll face in his 4 years here. he did not carry the ball that game, but let's not pretend he was ignored.

also, when comparing his '15 numbers to his '16 numbers, Dayes was out for like half of 2015 so that probably meant JaySam was targeted more in the passing game and had more carries than if Dayes had been healthy the whole season (and yes, JaySam was still under-utilized in '15...we all remember the bowl game). but on your overall point...yes, let's get JaySam as many touch as we possibly can. i do agree.

Wasn't JaySam banged up last year as well? Thought I'd heard something regarding that and then spent the month before the bowl getting healthy. He got his touches in the bowl game.

JSam getting less touches is more about a change in scheme than anything else.

I mean we had Dayes all year(JSam got more carries when Dayes got hurt year before), Hines playing well, Harmon playing well, Louis playing well, etc. Our offense is about distributing the ball to play-makers and keeping the defense off balance. I'd say JSam averaging 6-9 touches per game was solid to keep him healthy and not so predictable.

I imagine his usage will be somewhere around 8-12 touches per game this year.

Let the preseason hype begin.

Players on preseason lists for us so far:

Maxwell, Best Offensive Player - Jaylen Samuels
Bednarik, Best Defensive Player - Bradley Chubb
Mackey, Best TE - Cole Cook
Guy, Best P - AJ Cole

I imagine Chubb will also appear on the Lombardi and Nagurski lists too(believe they do preseason lists).
Samuels is listed as "APB", so he could potentially end up on the Walker list but I just don't consider him a RB but they didn't put him on the Mackey list so he's not being considered a TE either.
Honestly think Tony Adams deserves to be on some of the OL list but I know guards don't get as much hype as OTs.

great analysis/summary/preview for the season

https://www.sbnation.com/college-football/2017/7/18/15976194/north-carolina-state-football-2017-preview-schedule-roster

a few highlights:

Quote :
"Doeren inherited a team that had ranked worse than 75th in S&P+ in three of its last four seasons under Tom O’Brien. The Wolfpack offense fell directionless after Russell Wilson left, and the defense was merely decent. Because of the state of the conference, they were still winning — O’Brien’s last two sub-75 teams went 15-11 — but this was a mediocre program.

The Pack ranked just 78th in Doeren’s first season but improved to 46th in 2014, 41st in 2015, and 25th last fall. The defense has improved for three consecutive years, and the offense regressed by only a bit last season* after improving the previous two years. This was a strong team that finished well, beating UNC in Chapel Hill and trouncing Vanderbilt in the Independence Bowl.

So why in the world would Doeren be under pressure with such clear improvement? Wins. He doesn’t have a ton of them. He is 25-26 after four seasons, 22-17 if you remove the first-year reset. In O’Brien’s last four years, State was 29-22. Improvement on paper is great, but it only means so much to fans if you’re just improving enough to keep up with the conference’s improvement."

Quote :
"So how do we judge Doeren then? “They’re better on paper” sounds great, but it’s not reassuring if you keep leaving your stadium bummed out. (State has lost at least three home games in each of Doeren’s seasons.)

Still, using historical precedent, what can State expect? The Wolfpack have only had a handful of teams better than 2016’s since Lou Holtz left in the early 1970s. In fact, per S&P+, there have been just three, in 1979, 2002, and 2003. Only one won more than eight games.

NC State has mastered the art of being competitive and coming up short. (As a Missouri fan, I can say such a thing.) Over the last 29 seasons, they have been to 20 bowls but have won double-digit games or finished in the AP top 15 just once. State’s history has been of brief brilliance and the funks that follow."

(that level of mediocrity...rarely terrible, rarely/never great is pretty amazing)

Quote :
"But Dayes’ departure opens up the backfield. That might not be the end of the world, as the run game wasn’t very effective. Drinkwitz attempted balance on standard downs, calling run plays 61 percent of the time, but State ranked 78th in standard-downs success rate.

State got away with falling behind the chains because quarterback Ryan Finley was so good at catching back up. Finley’s passer rating was at its best on second down — he completed 68 percent then, with a 148 passer rating — which suggests good decision-making from Finley and strong play-calling from Drinkwitz. State ranked 16th in passing-downs success rate and created third-and-manageables."

Quote :
"Of course, opponents figured out that they shouldn’t run — State faced runs just 47 percent of the time on standard downs, 125th in FBS — and found more luck throwing. That will continue. State ranked 39th in passing success rate, and while big-play prevention was a strength, a quick passing game was a good antidote for State’s awesome run defense and aggressive pass rush"

and an interesting note about injuries/luck

Quote :
"The defense was lucky from an injury perspective — of the 20 defenders to average at least 0.8 tackles per game, 13 played in every game, and only one missed more than three games — and that probably won’t continue, but for the front six at least, depth means it probably won’t matter."

yeah pretty amazing that we've been so solidly mediocre. rarely terrible (a season here or there, but not for extended periods of time) and rarely/never very good. think about how atrocious Wake has been...and they won an ACC title ~10 years ago. or how terrible Duke's historically been...they won their division a few years back (weak division, weak schedule...but it still counts). we've never sunk to the lows that those programs have...but we also haven't really seen the heights that those programs briefly reached either.

it's especially impressive when you consider the QBs we've had and a #1 overall pick too.

We just picked the safe bet to cheer for.

Kind of like women...

You don't pick <4; but sometimes they happen... when you're drunk and desperate.
You don't get to pick >7; but sometimes they happen... when they're drunk and desperate.
You pick 4-7; she's adequate. sometimes a little better, sometimes a little worse. but you got what you got.

There is no reason for us to lose more than 3 games against this schedule. But I don't see us doing better than that. Best team DD has ever had. But 8-4 is our destiny under this guy.

this is definitely the best team he's had. but you're making it sound like we have an easy schedule. which is definitely not the case. Clemson, FSU, and UL all are more talented than us. that's probably where you're getting the 3 losses from. but ND is projected as a top 20 team by S&P+ rankings. UL at home is probably our best chance to steal one from those 4 teams.

and then @Pitt is no cake walk. we should win that game, but road games against P5 teams are never easy. and that's not to mention SCar in Charlotte to start the year.

i'd expect us to be favored in ~7 games. SCar, Furman, Marshall, Syracuse, @BC, @WF, UNC. Maybe @Pitt...but a road game against a decent opponent (projected 33 in S&P+) is tough.

i think 8-4 is a realistic goal, worse than that would be disappointing to me, although it always depends on you arrive at that final record. if we get a break here or there we could definitely be better than 8-4, i think that's a very real possibility. this is a product of having a tough schedule and being in a tough division more than DD being a bad coach.

besides...you said you "don't see us doing better than losing 3 games"? 9-3 would be a pretty great year, with a shot at 10-3 in the bowl game. i'd sign up for that right now.

DD has steadily improved the program every year. hard to say that 8-4 is our destiny under him when we've improved every year under him. from that SBNation piece posted earlier:

Quote :
"The Pack ranked just 78th in Doeren’s first season but improved to 46th in 2014, 41st in 2015, and 25th last fall. The defense has improved for three consecutive years, and the offense regressed by only a bit last season* after improving the previous two years. "

(that asterisk is because he says the hurricane game dropped our offensive numbers by about 10 spots)

to me, that looks like improvement. that looks like a positive trend.

Only caveat with that is that UL is a team where we would need to gameplan a little diff and its a short week. We also play Syracuse the week before and people are projecting their offense to improve, so could be a shootout. Conversely, UL plays Kent st and Murray st the 2 weeks before us, making that short week much more palatable.

We have a bye week to prepare for ND while they play USC. Also ND doesn't have Jackson

not a miracle, really. we'll probably be underdogs. they lost a lot. obviously, Jackson is back but they lost their top 3 WRs, RB, and TE. defensively they lost some guys and have a new DC. they'll be top 20 for sure. but i don't think they'll be a top 5 team like they were until the last 3 games of last year.

and to be fair, that was easily our worst game of the year coming off the clemson loss. they were better than us last year, no doubt about it. but that game wasn't exactly our A game.

UL shredded FSU last year too. FSU is a favorite to make the playoff this year.

obviously we aren't FSU. but i don't think it's too unreasonable to say that game is winnable. we probably won't be favored, but we'll probably only be slight underdogs imo

Losing to USC will be a really bad sign.

Their OL is hot garbage, so if we can't control the LOS against them then we're not going to be able to pressure anyone in the ACC.
Their DL isn't very good, so if we can't control the LOS against them then Finley is going to get murdered in the ACC.
Their best defender is coming off a serious injury that cost him most of last season.
Their kicking game is questionable.
Their QB was pretty awful against above-average defenses last season.
Their Coach hasn't proven to be any better than Doeren.

If we lose to them I think we're looking at a 6-6 season at best.
