our carry over is dumb.

i can carry over 3 weeks (which is what it got locked in at when they froze/eliminated that benefit), but i have to use carry over days prior to using new vacation days for the next year. they also moved to an accrual of vacation days by pay period, instead of giving you your full allotment of vacation days starting jan 1st. you can go negative if you need to.

everyone always looked forward to retiring on jan 1st using all the carry over and entitled vacation days at full pay... (could have been up to 16 weeks pay)

so this year, i'm going to put like two weeks into the bank, but have to use those two weeks before i use my entitled time next year, and in the end end up banking some of next year's time. i usually "buy" another week, so it kinda bones that. i bought a week this year and am not going to use it, so i'll get repaid for those hours on a paycheck in december.

seems silly. but glad i got grandfathered in for the carryover, even if it is for 3 weeks worth of time.

[Edited on November 7, 2011 at 11:08 AM. Reason : i thought about taking every wednesday in novemeber and december off buy im too busy.]

I've never worked at a place where this wasn't the case.

the old system was the shit. you just had this bank of vacation time you could use whenever you wanted to, or slowly build up your bank over the course of your career and cash it all out at once.

My first few years of working, I always had a couple weeks of vacation days left at the end of the year, which I lost if I didn't use. So the last two years, I've made it a point to take a spring break vacation in the duration between the President's Day and Memorial Day holidays. Between vacations and moving, I've only got 7 days left to use this year.

We are discouraged from carrying over days. We can, but they don't like it, and would rather just pay us the days from what I hear. We also usually can't take off more than 5 business days in a row since we're a small company and everyone is so important around here. Some guy took two weeks to peace out to Thailand and work got backlogged pretty bad, so they put a stop to that

I have like 5 days left for this year

Reminds me that I need to take some time over the Holidays. Cool thing about here is you never really have to take time unless you're doing no work at all when you're gone, like completely sans communication. Even if you're just checking email occaissonaly, you can always chalk it up to "working from home" or my favorite "a working vacation". I've only taken about two weeks of real vacation in three years.

"he instead decided it was better to just give me an extra paycheck for 10 of those days"

that's not a bad system at all.

My sis works for BOA, and what she does is 'buy' an extra week of vacation. Rather than taking the hit of an unpaid week, her paychecks are simply adjusted to spread out that cost over the entire year.

It'd be cool to have a flex system where you could either buy extra vacation, or get paid out at the end of the year for not taking all your vacation, if the company doesn't want to have a lot of vacation on the books as a liability on the balance sheet.

My company gives you a max amount of PTO hours that you can have at any one time, independent of the calendar. 160 hours up to 5 years of service and 280 if you've been with the company for 5 years or longer. we accrue 6.16 hours per pay period (adds up to 20 days per calendar year), and you don't lose any unless you exceed the number of hours depending on your years of service. I pretty much always try to keep it over 120 hours. I have no logic behind this, I just get a weird nervousness if I have less than 3 weeks of vacation that I can take any time in an 'emergency.'

My old mgr let me roll over a week every year off the record, but no longer. With all the comp time I hadn't taken a single day since last month when I basically took a mini vaca every single weekend.

that's how my company's used to be. Years ago they stopped the cashing out at once part unfortunately but it is still a pretty awesome system. You can carry over as much as you want, no cap on the total number of days you can have banked (or if there is it is extremely high), the rate at which you accrue vacation is tiered based on how long you have been at the company. Plus we already have every other Friday off (last year I had every Friday off). It's one of the best perks here and I hope it stays around for a long, long time. I currently have 11 weeks banked.

I am so sick of people who just happen to do the bare minimum to get by at work getting ahead of me because they are kissing ass and brown nosing...

I am constantly having the highest or one of the highests number, every month, yet people who do the bare minimum are getting ahead...

I am a nice person, a very nice person, but I'm not a fake person. I don't know how to brown nose or kiss ass. That is probably why I won't succeed in coorporate situations because I can't shamlessly step on other person to get where I need to be.

The favoritism that goes on there is unbelievable...Someone really had the nerve to say "I can do pretty much whatever I'd like because [boss lady] is my friend"

And the same people are out sick ALL THE FUCKING TIME! Then when I need to go home sick, because I am very obviously sick I get a guilt trip...if I didn't need a job so bad I'd walk out of there and then they would see how much work I actually do...

Your situation sounds a lot like what my friend was going through earlier this year. She finally quit after she was super sick with bronchitis and they gave her a guilt trip about taking a day off. By the end of the two weeks they were begging her to stay on but she had already found another position elsewhere lol.

The worst part is I like my job, and I like that I get to talk to some really awesome people all across the country...I would love to stay with this company but not if I have to stay in the same position and deal with this bullshit...unfortunately in this area there isn't a great deal of job openings...

I need to go back to school.

That's pretty nice.

My company does 3-weeks of flex time, and 3 days of "floating holidays". We can carry over 40-hours of flex time into the next year, but the floating holidays are 'use them or lose them' so we've recently been encouraged to finish using them.

^ Ugh yes I've had a job like that before. After three years I just started going rogue and doing what I wanted to get things done.

You would think after knocking over my tumbler and spilling coffee all over my desk THREE TIMES I would have learned my lesson and start putting the lid on the tumbler. But no, I just spilled it AGAIN. At least this time it was tea

Today's annoyances:

- Hey did you know that site X is in pending for you? Because it is. (repeat 4x)

- Hey why did you do X? [5 minutes later] Hey why did you do Y after X? [5 minutes later] Could you explain again why you did X before Y? [5 minute later] So why... (backstory on that one is we considered things a certain way because it was a special case and this guy wouldn't get off my ass about it because it's my fault that it's this way and I have to tell him how to wipe his ass to move ahead with the job)

- [message] Hey what do you need? #### Me: What? What did you need on site for the thing? Me: You were copied on the email I sent with the request. I need the guy to go out there and measure something before we can close this out. Can you send me it? Also did you notify Rebecca? Me: You were copied on the email, it was sent monday at x:xxPM. I'll resend it again. But how were we going to proceed? [delay of 5 minutes] OK thanks. (READ YOUR FUCKING EMAILS AND LEARN HOW TO SEARCH IN YOUR INBOX, DAMN IT. Also learn how to type out a coherent sentence, fuck.)

- Hey you know what sucks? When so and so department blah blah blah blah... (Aaaa leave me alone and let me work, I don't want idle chitchat when I'm in the zone if you're just coming over to complain to me about other people in the company.)

I mean it's cool that people have questions and want to talk and all but can we take a little more initiative and solve our own problems while being considerate when people look like they're busy? Oh well, with a little luck tomorrow will have fewer shitstorms.

[Edited on November 9, 2011 at 10:50 PM. Reason : ^^^^ I do that a little, but mostly just when I don't have time for unproductive chitchat.]

EVERY SINGLE TIME I talk to our bookkeeper I immediately want to fall asleep. I don't know what it is! I'm fine one moment and then the next, she starts talking and my eyes get tired and I start yawning and wanting to take a nap. She's the nicest lady, but she puts me to sleep.

Ugh I kind of hate when there's a teacher workday. I'm now one of only two people in the office today and of course there's a bunch of shit going down. I think it's kind of bullcrap our department head approved 75% of our staff taking today off when she knew there was a bunch of shit that needed to get done today.

I send an e-mail out to two individuals supporting a tasking I'm working on. E-mail includes the status of a travel request form, details on what's going on at a planning conference for an event in 2012, and when I will know more about the 2012 event to update them.

Phonecall:
Me: Warfare Systems blah blah blah, #### speaking.
Steve: Uh.... yeah I just got your e-mail.
Me: Sure. Have any questions?
Steve: Well I....... umm........ what's going on with that travel request form?
Me: *pause* You mean the one I mentioned in the e-mail?
Steve: Errr...... well... I ju-- *I cut him off*
Me: Like I said in my message, right now the form is *I explain about our travel request and REPEAT my e-mail.* So, does that clear it up or do you have any more questions?
Steve: Yeah, well, I just wasn't sure when that conference was or what it was about...

This jokers asked me about every single thing that I had just sent him via e-mail. I still view myself as a fairly "junior" employee.... there is no reason why I should be haven't to repeat e-mails to this guy whose been here a decade longer than me.

I hate when people do that. I usually say something along the lines of, "All the pertinent information is detailed in the email I just sent out. If you have any questions not answered by the email, feel free to email them to me and I'll reply back to you as soon as I can."

And even then I often end up c/ping crap from the email

This is one of the good things about working for the state. Similar to this but you can accrue even more...sort of. You can carry up to 240 hours of vacation time, which can (in theory) be used in as large or as small a block as you want. At least in my experience I would never ask for more than a week at a time, unless it was for something like a honeymoon or a years-in-the-making overseas vacation, but the potential is there. And that time gets paid out when you leave the job. If you accrue more than 240 hours, it doesn't disappear, but rolls over into sick time, which there is no maximum balance of. You can't take sick leave with you, nor does it get paid out if you leave the job, but if you retire with the state, you can (usually) use those sick leave days to continue as a full pay employee after you cease working. I've heard of folks having 8 or 9 months accumulated on retirement and just riding all that time out.
