Sure, Reid took a 2-14 team to an 11-5 record
But he also took a team with 5 Pro Bowlers last year, lost 5 of the last 7 games of the season, then suffered an epic playoff collapse2/2/2014 8:39:19 AM |

i'd definitely say he's top 10 though 2/10/2014 11:13:50 PM |

If guys like Brady and Luck get excused for average stats because they lack talent around them on offense, then so should Cam. IMO, Rodgers is in a league of his own as the best QB in the NFL. No one touches him. Then you've got a handful of other guys like Brees and Rivers who are a tier below but still elite. Cam is at a third tier, below those other guys but right on the cusp of greatness.

I know there is a 0% chance of this happening, but god I would love to trade up and get Sammy. I think he stands a decent chance to be the best player in this draft. 2/16/2014 9:17:03 AM |
LudaChris All American 7946 Posts user info edit post |
Watkins will be a top 10 pick for sure, can't imagine us going all-in and trading away multiple 1st round picks to move up to land him. We need to do our due diligence and find some of these 2nd round and later WRs that other teams keep finding(Gordon, Nelson, Hilton, etc). 2/17/2014 8:24:41 AM |
Shrike All American 9594 Posts user info edit post |
There will probably be multiple WRs with first round grades left on the board by the time we pick. Just have to pick the one with the least bust potential. No need to trade up, there isn't much separating the top 4-5 receivers in the draft, and the combine might bring them even closer. 2/17/2014 8:53:58 AM |
LudaChris All American 7946 Posts user info edit post |
Curious to see how the combine goes, because right now I think there is a clear separation between 1/2 and the rest of the pack with the WRs. Think it's Watkins/Evans and then the rest of the pack is a little lower as far as "obvious first round picks". Think there are 2 solid first round guys and then a bunch of late 1st round/early 2nd round WRs that get bunched up.
We're not going to be moving up to get Watkins or Evans, personally think Evans would be a better compliment to Newton that Watkins would be, but both will be fairly high picks. 2/17/2014 10:42:54 AM |

Tons of really good WRs in this draft. Watkins, Evans, Lee, Matthews, Benjamin, etc. I don't think trading up for a WR is a good idea. You're going to get a good one if you've got a pick in the first round. 2/17/2014 11:47:40 AM |

I still like Benjamin for this team. Dude would give Cam a huge target, and he would be a beast as a downfield blocker as well. Hopefully he can handle Cam's fastballs. 2/17/2014 12:44:54 PM |
LudaChris All American 7946 Posts user info edit post |
If our last 2 drafts are any indicator, we seem to like to take "High Floor" kinda guys over "High Ceiling" types.
Benjamin screams "high ceiling" and "low floor". Only a rs-sophomore, great size but not sold on his routes/speed/hands, still think he's somewhat of a project. Depending on what slides to us, I'd be curious about taking Benjamin, he could really improve his stock if he shows up and has a strong performance at the combine. 2/17/2014 12:54:49 PM |
jbrick83 All American 23447 Posts user info edit post |
Benjamin isn't a project. Projects don't score 15 touchdowns. Being a "rough" route runner isn't a project. Being primarily a basketball player who decides to concentrate on football late in your career is a "project" (Graham, Gonzalez, Gates, Thomas).
Speaking of WRs, can you place a bet on the Patriots selecting Campanaro?? 2/17/2014 1:44:08 PM |
LudaChris All American 7946 Posts user info edit post |
Hmmm, the examples you gave are all TEs. I think you basically explained why Benjamin is exactly a "project". He has tremendous upside with talent, but I'm guessing he's behind the curve in route running, hands, football IQ, etc. I've also seen plenty of questions about a good number of drops he had this year.
I think the guy has POTENTIAL to be a #1 WR based on size, he could easily become a Vincent Jackson type of WR. I just don't think you can count on him to produce a ton as a rookie, going to take some time for him to get it going at the next level, won't be able to just rely on his physical abilities/size.
Give me Watkins and Evans all day over Benjamin, not that I don't think Benjamin can eclipse those guys, I just think Benjamin has the higher potential to be a bust and those other 2 are going to be more game-ready for Week 1 as rookies. I'm sure some team will take a chance on Benjamin as a 1st rounder though, esp. if he has a strong combine/pro day. 2/17/2014 3:13:28 PM |

well duh. im pretty sure no one is saying they'd rather have benjamin over watkins or evans. but unless one of those guys kills somebody or makes a dog fight a baby, they aren't going to be around for the panthers to draft.

Of the WRs we might have a chance of picking, Allen Robinson is probably the most likely to contribute his first year. Doesn't have great speed but knows how to use his size to get open and runs great routes. The problem is if he has a really good combine, he probably won't fall to us. So let's hope he gets the flu that day! 2/18/2014 8:37:45 AM |

A few current mocks

Quote : | " 28. Carolina -- Marcus Roberson, CB, Florida
A first-round receiver wouldn't surprise anyone, but this draft is loaded at that position, and the Panthers would be better served to address their shallow depth at cornerback. Carolina's defensive front seven did all the heavy lifting in 2013, and an upgrade in the secondary is the key to the Panthers slugging it out with the NFC heavyweights in Seattle and San Francisco. Roberson, Roby and Purifoy should all be in the mix, but we're giving the nod to Roberson based on his speed and natural athleticism in coverage.

Quote : | "28. Carolina Panthers - Kelvin Benjamin, WR, Florida State
Steve Smith has been on a steady decline over the last few seasons, and the Carolina Panthers need to find another wide receiver to eventually replace him as the team's No. 1 option. For Cam Newton to take the next step in his development, he needs better receivers than Brandon LaFell and Ted Ginn Jr. Enter Kelvin Benjamin, who drops a few too many passes and needs to refine his route running, but has the physicality and speed to be a difference-maker in the red zone." |

That is awesome. I don't give a shit about racing, but I'll be pulling for Austin Dillon.
You know what else is awesome? The fact that the draft is loaded at the positions the Panthers need the most -- WR, OT, CB.
I think you almost have to take a chance on Benjamin if he's there in the first. The hands and route-running can all be improved. You can't coach his size, speed, and jumping ability. He's not just huge, he's also surprisingly good in the open field -- Demarius Thomas-esque. 2/20/2014 9:55:51 AM |

I don't really think you can fix "bad hands", see: Ted Ginn, Jr. With that said, I don't think Benjamin has bad hands, he just tends to look up field for YAC before actually securing the ball. That can be fixed. 2/20/2014 11:00:27 AM |
