That last image is a horrific attempt at hdr. It was so terrible that I thought it looked sort of cool, almost like a sketch

I played with a d90 last night, with the sigma 30mm 1.4, and the video it took were beautiful. I cannot wait to get that camera in my hands. Low light performance was great as well. 9/15/2008 12:56:53 AM |

OK so i kept playing around with the hdr software (qtpfsgui, its free) and this is a hair better. I think the building looks good but it was super windy today so the trees wouldnt stay still enough to get the foliage to look decent

"Underwater" SLRs aren't any different than "above water" SLRs. They're the exact same cameras, just in an expensive housing, with expensive strobes.

I got a good rep from my pro photographer friend after this weekend. I maybe hooked up with a few of his magazines later this week for national and international publication work! He's not promising anything, but he just told me to get ready and start thinking of putting a portfolio together in the next week or so. Damn, too many pics I've taken thus far to really pic and choose. 9/16/2008 1:45:47 AM |

The Canon 5D mark II is Official!! Looks like I won't be getting one though. The one thing I wanted was a faster frame rate, but it's only 3.9 fps :-( Not a major upgrade from 3 fps. Hopefully this'll make the prices on used original 5D's plummet and i'll pick up one of those. 9/18/2008 12:06:21 AM |
JBaz All American 16764 Posts user info edit post |
its 21MP, I wouldn't expect it to be high fps. Even the 1Ds only does 4-5fps. The amount of bandwidth needed for the memory and processor handling is a large task. I'm a bit stunned with it being 21MP since it was rumored to be 16MP. It really does undercut the 1Ds value quite a bit.
The one thing that's disappointing with the new 5D mkII is that it uses the same 9pt AF system, although it does get the additional 6 cross reference points that the 40D/50D currently has. For regular everyday pictures, 9pt is more than enough and the center pt with the extra cross points help out really well in low light situations (tech from the 1D actually). But for sports, I can't tell you have much I love, love LOVE the 45pt system on the 1D. I barely use the 30D or the 5D that much compared the 1D.
Also the 1080p HD video capture is a nice feature and would go pretty good with media folks who want to take some simple vids. I'm up in the air with it, but would like to get my hands on one. Maybe they'll have some demo's at the tradeshow in NYC next month. 9/18/2008 1:02:06 AM |

This is my first SLR. So I was consider buying a slightly older one and less expensive one. I don't mind putting a little amount of $texas in it...but which one to get...is still a puzzle to me. 9/18/2008 7:32:14 AM |

it really depends on what your budget is and what you typically want to shoot. For about 500-600, you can get a nice camera setup with the D40 or one of the rebel lines. I haven't seen the latest prices for the entry level slr's since new ones come out so quickly and their prices fall faster than the banking market. 9/18/2008 1:47:50 PM |

jvp7800, what time of day were those taken?
I just got a D40 and its pretty awesome so far. to me at least.
Here is some handy D40 info if anyone cares: http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d40/users-guide/index.htm Thats a pro's advice on how to set up and work w/ the D40.
I went out yesterday to the gardens here and took what i thought would be some fantastic garden scenes, landscapes, etc. It was the perfect day. However when i got home i found them to be all overexposed and washed out looking. The guy in the link above mentions this and says the Nikon D40 and D80 do this a lot and he automatically turns down the exposure comp to -2/3 for almost everything. He also applies the "+enhanced" color/saturation whatever mode. He has some shots on the website with and w/o these settings and its pretty dramatic. So i hope to go back soon and try these settings out.
I was also shooting at around 1pm on a bright and sunny day. Is that just too much light? I know dawn/dust is the "best", but I assume nice vibrant shots can be had during the day, too, no? 9/21/2008 8:35:03 PM |

It's not really a crop thing...you need to rotate the canvas just 1-2 degrees to straighten the horizon. Then crop out the damaged corners.
I'd also crop a little off the bottom to keep that line separating the water and the sky from being at the 45% mark. I'd hate to crop out the knees because they add to the photo, but having a horizontal line anywhere near the 50% mark of the photo cuts it in half and breaks it into two segments for the eye to explore. That photo could go either way...Either with the horizontal line at 45% or without would work, but I'd at least try cropping it a little to move that line to the bottom 40% of the frame.

Lens Baby or a tilt shift lens can create this effect. You can also use some other specialized lens adapters with billows to distort perspective, although now days, its hardly worth the price for such a specialized equipment when you can get the effect you want easily with photoshop. I don't remember how to do it since it's been a while since I read the article on how it's done.9/21/2008 11:50:59 PM |

those are da shit. I think a few of the professors here are trying to get a pro underwater photographer to come by our school. We just had Jack Reznicki do a two part seminar at RCC last week of which I attended both. He was sponsored by Canon to come talk to our school about his commercial photography business and man, I'm totally inspired by his work.
Jack Reznicki is one of the top Commercial photographers in NYC that has a specialty with taking pictures of children. He works with big clients like toys-r-us and such. Check it out, he also did a recent ad this month for Pocket Wizards. We got to pick his brain for a whole day.

going through my MotoGP pics and it's getting annoying trying to correct the white balance on some of theses. The whole weekend was just so spotty in weather conditions and AEB doesn't work on any of these, nor the regular presets or close. I'm trying to use the white race paint as the balance point and makes the environment look spot on, but the racers look flat in color, even when I set the color vibrancy up a bit.
Grr. Screw it, I'll deal with it tomorrow. 9/22/2008 3:06:53 AM |
