I hate when customers act like buying a phone is equivalent to adopting a baby.

They come into the store 10 different times and ask the same questions and still "aren't sure" about which phone they should get. It's a phone, dammit. I realize you should do you research, but some people just go over the top with it.

They want me to travel next Tuesday right before Thanksgiving for some kind of vendor demonstration of Cisco's telepresence at their offices in NYC.

On one hand, their new telepresence stuff looks awesome and should be interesting and it is completely paid for, though not an overnight stay. I have to come and go on the regional train.

On the other hand,
-1) I know they will never really buy any of this shit, let alone take full advantage of it/get their money's worth in the next decade. They always have these grand ideas and tell me "Money is no object', when I am putting a quote together. Then balk at it when they actually see the real price. The managers seem to think they can negotiate their own prices with this shit and it has never worked once or they have no clue at all what anything costs in the real world.
-2) I have enough shit to do here where it will put me behind schedule where I'll have to come in over Thanksgiving holiday to get back on track. Plus they told me they wouldn't make me do any of this side work bull shit while I am working on this main project.
-3) I hate NYC.

My coworker is very very religious, and that's great and all, but she's also not very open minded about people and/or things...

So last night's Glee got a terrible rating because last week it focused on the relationship of its gay cast members, so folks didn't tune in as much this week apparently.

Well we were talking about how our advertisers aren't going to be happy about the rating situation (and only stated that its probably because they focused on gay rights or whatever) and she starts going on a rant about how "the gays are ruining everything that is normal". I had to stop her because I was scared she was going to start talking about burning them at the stake

Apparently this conversation had been going on for a good 30 minutes before I got into work.

They're saying that because it focuses on gays people aren't watching

I don't know...there was a huge basketball game on that decided if a local coach would pass Bobby Knight in all time D-1 wins or something like that...

I mean there was OTHER SHIT on TV this week, but to her its because of the gays

^^^^^

I had a coworker that was a "younger Christian" heard someone in our working group sneeze and me reply "bless you". This guy flat-out stops what he is doing, turns around, and says, "you know, if you're really a Christian, you shouldn't say that." Whiskey Tango Foxtrot?! He explains that "Bless You" is a reference to when the German pagans use to believe that sneezes were demons leaving your body, but if you believe you are 'saved', then you know you can't be possessed by demons... therefore Christians shouldn't say "bless you".

Being the good Baptist deacon I am, I just kindly reminded him that regardless of the roots, the meaning today is just to be kind and wish someone well (that they aren't sick or whatever), and that is perfectly reasonable. I also gave him the whole "should we eat meat sacrificed to pagan Gods" thing, but GOOD FREAKING GRIEF, SON!

...people need to think about the benefit of what they are going to say before they bother everyone's work.

I too understand this having been a automotive sales consultant. If you want to buy [brand A] because it's priced better than [brand B], THEN BUY [brand A] and quit wasting my time!!!

^^ so should "good Christians" refuse to go to church on Sunday since it's the day that Pagans set for worshiping the sun god? I don't understand what it is about Christianity that will make completely normal humans turn into blabbering retards.

^Careful.

The point isn't that he was talking religion at work. It was that he was distracting everyone from doing what they are paid to do for the sole purpose of annoying them about some stupid pagan connection to something we do. That's not a Christian thing, it's a self-centered 'Look at me, I watch the History Channel' thing.

Trust me, it's the exact same way when we get into conversations about Naval systems at work. I was talking about one of the gun systems on our destroyers and this guy was quick to correct that the way I said they gave their 'battery release' command was incorrect. Apparently he had watched something on Discovery Channel the other day so he thought he was hot shit regarding surface engagements. I asked him if he had ever been out to sea for an engagement and when he said no, I just said, "Yeah, well... I have, so let me tell you how it really happens." Dumb know-it-alls aren't limited to just religion or anything else...

Fuck you History & Discovery Channel. You are a workplace annoyance.

Ugh I hate when people like that are in my office. I did an internship at this place where one of the guys on our team was some flavor of fundie. He would not shut the fuck up for one second about his religious views, which was incredibly uncomfortable since most of the people on our team were not Christians. At one point he told off this woman that managed a facility we rented because he decided that she wasn't devout enough and we almost lost our facility contract because of him pissing her off. Then he started reaming a girl on our team because she was telling us how she was converting to Judaism or something. It was around that time he had several HR complaints filed against him and he was "laid off."

I swear if my coworker comes up to me one more time right when I come into work and tells me she's taking another day off I'm gonna go postal.

She's like "I need to cook for my family for Thanksgiving". Yeah so do I, plus I have to drive home after I cook, so don't give me that lame excuse.

UGH

She's taking the next 3 Fridays off so she can shop for Christmas, put up Christmas decorations, etc. I mean I'd like to do that shit too ya know

I used a lot of sick time earlier in the year for my surgery. Although I didn't get paid for all of it. Only like 3 of the 10 days. Any other time off for doctors appointments have also been unpaid. But I get 6 paid sick days. I feel like doodoo today and really wanna leave but am afraid to ask to leave because I've had do much time off this year. Even though it wasn't paid.

What I'm getting at is if I feel crummy I shouldn't have to feel guilty about wanting to go home. Especially if the other time off I had was from surgery. Damn you corporate America.

Same new girl as in my post a little bit above,

To another woman in the office, "You know, I just feel like it's a real organizational shortfall. It seems the benefits should be handed out in a more traditional way that earning them with every paycheck."

She's bitching because she JUST started working for us after her command was axed for being unneeded and poorly organized. We get XX amount of leave every two weeks. Since she just started working, she's pissed that she "only" gets the federal holidays off and won't have a lot of time to take off around the holidays.

The woman she's talking to, "I just feel bad. I mean, I don't feel bad, but I feel on the organization's behalf because this really isn't right."

Wait a second... when the fuck did it become "not right" for someone to be owed benefits they didn't earn. This kind of idiotic discussion is why your fucking command just got shut down!!! Oh yeah and to the second lady, I'm sure our supervisor loves you apologizing for how mean and inept he is... good grief.

While she probably is annoying, I agree that is pretty terrible benefits management if she transferred within the company and didn't keep any accrued vacation time. Hope she got a lump sum payout for what she had store at her previous position at least.

^,^^ She didn't transfer within the company, she transfered within the government and to two very different organizations. Before she was paid by JFCOM which got axed by the Secretary of Defense. Her benefits carried over, but from what I gathered, there was a period between when her position was axed with JFCOM and when she could start working with Naval Sea Systems Command so instead of taking Leave With Out Pay (LWOP) she took annual leave.

Her rationale is "I was forced to take my annual leave". My logic is "your job was axed... you were effectively laid off for being in a poorly managed and unnecessary command... yet we found another job for you working at the same base in our branch so.... be thankful."

----

So just to clarify, when you work for NAVSEA you get holiday leave, annual leave, sick leave, then if you work above 40 hours you get credit hours that you can bank up to 24 hours total. She should have a couple of days annual by now (she's been here about a month or two), and you get every federal holiday off already. So she'll get Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years off. She has her annual leave that she's banked so far, and she is free to work over 8 hours a day if she would like to earn some "credit hours" to use in lieu of annual leave.

Basically, she's just being ungrateful for the fact that she has a job..... no one is forcing her to come in on Christmas Day.

as far as no vacation time; i started my current job last year, the week before thanksgiving. i had not PTO for the entire holiday season. that's right, only 3 federal holidays off the entire holiday season. bitch about it? nah, just went to work and carried on. this girl is bad news.

There are some jobs and time where you can't just waltz out of work on the drop of a dime. I'll have kids one day and I concede that if I want to keep my job I may have some stuff to finish up before i could get to said vomiting baby.

Is it ideal, no, but i don't consider a little over an hour to be extreme
