While the first goal was Chelsea scored was not a goal, Malouda was pulled down in the box and a penalty was not given. Chelsea were the aggressors most of the game with the exception of Sandro and his rocket goal, Spurs were not really a threat on goal much.
The Kalou goal while maybe he was slightly offsides it wasn't egregious. 4/30/2011 7:26:03 PM |

Neither of those goals were goals, and the honest truth is Spurs might've been pinned back but they got FUCKED because of poor refereeing decisions.

Wow. Just had a chance to see the replays. This might be worst refereed game of the season because of how dramatically it changed the game. Absolutely disgraceful. No way either of those goals should have been given. 5/1/2011 6:12:31 AM |

Nothing about the foul by Kaboul on Malouda in the box, guess you feel that was the proper call. The fact of the matter is Chelsea can't do anything about bad officials, and will take the win whether people think it is fair or not.
Until they get some kind of goal line technology calls like this are possible, and if Gomes hadn't pulled a Green we wouldn't be talking about this at all.
And bullshit it didn't change the complexion Chelsea was already dominating possession.
The fact of the matter is ManU controls their destiny they win today they are still 6 points clear. Chelsea all they can do is win to keep the pressure on. 5/1/2011 8:46:47 AM |

Spurs absorbed everything Chelsea threw at them, including those bullshit goals. Possession doesn't matter. Looks at the CdR final in Spain. What matters is when a team doesn't get scored on - which is what happened yesterday. That was a fucking 1-0 Tottenham win with any other refereeing staff.
and stop discounting Tottenham like they weren't playing on the counter and getting their own opportunities. Chelsea's not that fucking good. They had to have help from the referees to even get a sniff at this game.

1-3 Blackpool 3-3 Wolves 0-0 West Ham 0-0 Wigan
Arguably the 4 worst teams in the league in a row, and they got 3 points from a possible 12. That kind of shit is what fucked them out of CL, not getting screwed by referees in a game they weren't supposed to win anyways 5/1/2011 2:47:09 PM |

It's not so much that the wrong calls were made as much as it is the manner in which they were made. How in the world the AR makes the call from 12 yards up the field and thinks he has a right to award Chelsea a goal from that position is beyond me. One of the first things you learn as a referee is that you never make a call like unless you're absolutely sure. This guy's career is pretty much over. That was a HUGE mistake not only because he got the call wrong but from a technical refereeing perspective as well.
And how they let the second goal go when Kalou is clearly offsides is atrocious as well. The play happened quickly but at no point was Kalou onside in the run-up to scoring anyway so I don't see how the AR on that side could miss it. That was a really bad call. He was probably too busy being dazzled by Drogba to notice Kalou.
As for the penalty, I'm not entirely convinced either way. I never really saw a good replay of it but from some angles it looks like Kaboul gets a touch to the ball before Malouda goes down even though Kaboul went through him a little. It was a tackle around Malouda that caught him a bit though and if you can get the ball at all from a position like that a penalty is not typically called. I'm not sure on it one way or the other because I never saw a good replay but it wasn't a clear cut penalty to me.
And I don't give a flying fuck about Chelsea winning the PL. I care about Spurs getting into CL next season and that's almost definitely not going to happen. aimorris is right that Spurs shot themselves in the foot when they took 3 of 12 from shitty teams, but it still burns to have points taken away from them in this fashion. Worst refereed game all season.
Upon further review: I am sure that was not a penalty. Anyone who thinks it was is letting the crowd and announcer's opinion influence you. If you look closely, the heel of Kaboul's foot steps on top of the ball and there really wasn't all that much contact with Malouda anyway. There was some shoulder to shoulder contact going on but there was no trip or use of arms or anything. It was just a really good last ditch tackle.

I see no one in this thread disputing the bad calls. The reality of the situation is that Man City would have been 4 pts ahead of Spurs with a game in hand even if Tottenham somehow held on and beat Chelski, and 6pts up if they had tied.

No, they would have been 4 points up on Spurs with 4 games left, one of them against each other. It would have taken a pretty spectacular finish to the season to make CL, but it was still within the realm of possibility. Now that's gone. 5/2/2011 6:15:58 AM |

Just because he scores 5 goals against Birmingham doesn't mask the fact he is slow, poor in the air and generally so inferior to Owen... it's ridiculous - yet he is above Micky in the pecking order. Might I remind Alex of Man City at Old Trafford, or Wolfsburg? Giving Owen 5 minutes everytime we are 1-0 down is a joke. He should start away from home, he's clinical." |

Michael Owen is solid enough that he would play for a lower-table team regularly. Someone like a Fulham, Everton, Villa, etc.
His game was never about speed, it was always hanging out with the last defender and placing a shot when the ball breaks for him. He's still by far one of the best in the world at doing that and his age has nothing to do with that sort of ability. Teddy Shearingham did the same thing until he was 40 years old.
but it doesn't surprise me that it's just aimorris enjoying his sour grapes again 5/2/2011 3:22:31 PM |

The only other player on the planet that plays close to how he does right now is Chicharito, who plays in the exact same mold.
Just because he doesn't play that often anymore doesn't mean he's not good, it just means that there are players on United's bench who are better than he is. Like I said, Owen could go to any other club and be a regular in the starting lineup.

Ronaldo has the most World Cup goals in history, I think Chelsea should sign him up. Michael Owen at his prime was one of the greatest forwards of all time, I'm not throwing that all away because he's a scrub for United. I could give a shit about that, I'm not "bitter" in any kind of way.
I thought it was clear we were talking about 10-11, not a lifetime body-of-work - you know, the same 10-11 season where Owen has fucking 10 appearances in the PL, with 1 start, and 1 goal. I honestly didn't make the post looking to stir up anything, I didn't realize all United fans were so defensive about a washed up reserve forward who does nothing but trip over himself to try to win penalties anymore - I just assumed this guy was an idiot.
