It seems extreme because I know the mom, and where she works and what she does I guess. We've never had a parent take longer than 30 minutes. And holding a screaming child that is vomiting/dripping snot for an hour sucks. So it would be an annoyance in my workplace.

Between my wife and I, we've never gone that long for that kind of situation. Granted our respective jobs may be be more open to up-and-leaving that others. When the call comes in, we just pick whoever is most able to leave the office. I may have to stay up late or make some time up somewhere, but family comes before work.

But really, if the kid's puking and sick and shiz at 10, you probably should have stayed home to start with. Taking a sick kid to preschool is worse than showing up to work sick yourself. And, if it's the same at other preschools, you have to stay home the next day, so now you missed a day and a half instead of maybe just missing today.

That's definitely an annoyance, elise. I guess different people just look at it differently. Personally, I work in an environment where politics is a day-to-day occurance (DoD work). It's just part of it. I have sponsors pop up and try throwing money to someone that use to be an old platoon buddy of his from time-to-time, but that's just what I signed up for.

I did not sign up to hear a girl clipping her fingernails off and bitching about not being given "enough leave" having only worked here for a couple months. As another poster said, that's just trouble.

IMHO, I would have to imagine if you are a teach or work in child care, you have to know you're going to deal with "icky kids". That's at least what I would picture as "just a part of it".

No, it was not! Your kid was awesome today. And yes, we kept the sicko away from the others.

Guess what paperwork is NOT getting filled out today.

"I have to use all my leave by the end of the year or it does roll over so I know I'm a senior employee with every bit of information you need to know and a lot of open-lines of communication with a lot of people who will be calling in the next few weeks, but I'm taking off and never checking my voicemail once."

When you call contractors at the same time every week to get numbers from them, and yet they still are not prepared for the call and you have to wait hours for them to find the information.

STOP SPRAYING LYSOL, WOMAN IN THE CUBE NEXT TO ME.

Just because your boss is sick TODAY and she visited you YESTERDAY at your cube doesn't mean you need to spray down everything.

Hey caterer, thanks for being 30 fucking minutes late, and then when I call you multiple times to see where you are, try to claim we had set a different drop off time. Funny how the confirmation email you sent me AND the invoice you faxed me say the correct time on it. But aside from that, even if we HAD decided on the time you claim, you're still over 15 minutes late

Everyone in our section gathered at table eating the department-sanctioned holiday lunch discussing old shows (Dallas, Dynasty, etc.)

Co-worker (directed to me): JP, do you remember any of these shows??

Me: nope

Everyone: LOL, young whippersnapper!!

I have conversations that turn out this way frequently, and it pisses me off.

^I had someone do something similar when I was giving a briefing at work. Their response was "Shit, I have pair of underwear at home older than you." I said, "Yeah, and I have a shitty-ass stove I have to take to the dump that's as old as you. What's your point?"

Sometimes I think it's just people trying to pick around with "the new guys". Other times they're just being an ass.

I cannot do my job if we don't have enough program licenses. I will continue to sit here and mindlessly double click this file for hours until a license becomes available and the file will open. Thank you for paying me to double click a file all day, but really, I don't mind doing real work if you'd just let me.

You know I leave the office at 3:45 but you schedule a "last minute urgent meeting" at 3:30 anyway. And never mind I know damn well nothing about this meeting can't wait until tomorrow

I'm the youngest person in my office by a good 10 years and I'm always getting picked on about my age. I'm surprised I haven't heard the "i have underwear older than you" joke yet. Next time I'll try out your comeback...

It is really aggravating when a customer/vendor/co-worker/whoever doesn't take me seriously because I look younger than I am. Maybe I should try the "yeah? well you look WAY older than you really are" approach. I'll let you know how that goes.

haha yeah it was a culture shock when i am came to my current job- i HATED being the youngest

went from mostly 23-30 yr olds, with middle management in lower 30's, to almost everyone in my group over 35, lots of people in 40's and up (having children my age).

I'm probably the youngest, but most of the workers are mid 20s to mid 30s, with upper management around 40 (and some acting like they're mid 20s apart from work duties )

Yeah, I wouldn't encourage talking back to people with much more experience than you, but in my situation it worked. Weak comeback, but those guys kind of appreciate someone who will stand their ground.

The command staff on the other hand... they want "yes men" at their meetings. "Outstanding idea, sir! Wow, I never thought of that, sir! Do you mind if I help you with that amazing project, sir?"

fucking arrogant prick.

autocad has model space and paper space for a reason. if you're worried about layer control, then go to model space to determine that and to draw your objects. paper space is for fucking text and you have literally zero layer control issues with that.

i got pwnd today for missing a meeting while i attended to a more pressing crisis.

this particular meeting would have entailed me shaking some hands at the beginning, during pizza lunch, and as we left, with no meaningful participation at all.

even if i had gone i would have been in and out with the taco shits.

instead i insured students in my department actually got textbooks. seems like a worthwhile trade to me... but i got this email:

Quote :
"Bookstore problems happen all of the time. I need you to know that when I call a meeting it takes a precedent over just about everything.

I’ll try to find time to fill you in so that you can be an active participant at the meeting tomorrow. I have a lot of work to get ready for that.

^^ similar thing happened to me a couple weeks ago. I'm on call for any emergencies in our labs, and so if I get called on my pager, I'm supposed to answer as soon as possible.

I'm in a meeting with the boss, who gave me the pager, when it went off. I excused myself to go take care of it, and he looks at me dumbfounded and says we're in a meeting right now. Ok boss, I'm sure the toxic gas leak will take care of itself.

The worst are meetings about meetings. We have those every Monday. And then on Friday, we have a recap meeting of all the meetings that happened that week. How the fuck do we make any money?

For me, the flipside of this, has always been that I'm able to get away with being a lot less diplomatic because I look so young that people don't expect me to be professional.

Basically, it gives me a little more leeway to bitch people out and I love it.

That said, I also go to work in a t-shirt, jeans, and sandals, so I'm really not helping my case any.

When fuckers that don't even know me tell my bosses that I should have xyz information and files and that they're needed ASAP. Hey shittards, I'm not even on that project and it was done 6 years ago, well before my time here. Now, yes, I have the ability to get your those files, but after wasting 2 or 3 other peoples' time because they're the ones with this information.

My cell phone reception in this building ranges from good all the way to nonexistant depending on where in the building I am. So, rather often, I will emerge from a room where I have no signal to find a voice mail to the effect of "Chris--I need help with issue xyz--I'm leaving at 3 PM so please call before then". Invariably, when I look at my watch, it will be something like 3:15.

I guess that's more of a cell phone annoyance than a workplace annoyance, but if this wasn't a monstrous brick and cinder block building full of electronic equipment and set into the side of a slope, it probably wouldn't be so bad.

Someone sends a mas email to the entire department (>1000 people) requesting information. Of course some genius will reply all with a response. But what really annoys me is when a third person will reply all to the response notifying everyone that we need not reply all.

^^This isn't a workplace annoyance, but I love it when someone responds to the entire department with some sort of inside joke/not-work-appropriate joke that they assume will just go directly to the e-mail's originator.

"TO: XYZ_Department_Listserv

MESSAGE: Did anyone get that thing I sent you?

^ yea, it happens at least once a week, and I feel like the person is trying way too hard to make the offender feel stupid. You can just email that one person about their error if you are that bothered by it or they accidentally sent out personal info, no need to fill up everyone's email with your nit picky bs.

a good percentage of who i work with, works 6-230.

seems as if these are the only coffee drinkers, which is understandable.

but what's not acceptable is that these dbags will turn the pot off, clean it, and store the shit by like 130.

look, you might have eaten lunch at 1030am, but it's 2pm for me, and im mid coma and struggling to make it through the rest of the day in this quiet.

BUT WE ALREADY CLEANED THE POT
