So, the rail came in today. It is starting to come together nicely.
The final components to have a functioning rifle should be here by friday.

Does anybody have an AR action block that I can borrow or come use, so that I can put it all together?

The rail matches much better than the picture shows. It is actually a touch darker than the stock and grip.

Might try buying a used one on arfcom or similar and selling it again when you're done. It's a pretty cheap, but one-off item, so they're up for sale pretty frequently.

Parts came in today. Optics, rail covers, and AFG will be here next week.
The action block should be here next week as well, and then I can tighten everything down. Once I get the action block I'm putting the Noveske KX3 on the AR pistol, and the YHM Phantom on the rifle.

No, you dont need a scope. At all.

You're not gonna be going for a headshot or something while defending your home. Spray and pray basically.

You also typically wouldnt use one for shooting skeet either.

I like ghost rings but my 500 was also a hunting gun. If it's strictly a house gun then just learn to point it well. The money sights would cost is better spent on other stuff like lights, ammo, or range time...unless you just want sights. In that case just get them if you like them.

went to Lawmen's this weekend just to kill some time. Saw they had a large selection of their handguns red-tagged for LEO purchase only. They were your standard things, Sprinfield XD, Glocks, etc. Is there something special i didn't see, other than the discounted price, or do they just like to keep these in stock and available for LEO?

Newb question: Can someone point me in the direction I need to take to get a light attached to the Mossberg? I see all kinds of kits and attachments and lingo that I don't know how to decipher. I just want a friggin little flashlight attached to it and I don't think I want the cords running down the barrel. Just something simple and cheap - and I have never attached anything to a gun before.

They have special agreements with the companies so that they can either only sell those guns to LEOs or they can only sell them at that price to LEOs. I don't live around there anymore but I know that there were some that they would not sell to anyone that did not have LE or First Responder ID. It seems like you could buy Glock for a higher price but not Sig or S&W but I'm really not sure anymore.

everyone's I have seen lately has a either a barrel that is longer than mine or a shorter "magazine" (tubular) and I'm curious as to which is the case (both "barrels" are the same length)

hunting for BIRDS is limited to 3, 2 in mag/1 in chamber. Thus why if I go duck hunting with mine, I have to use a LOOONG plug int he mag. But then mine is a 10+1 with short shells, 8+1 with mag loads.

I have the 90th day (from application) marked on the calendar, so I can go give the Sheriff's office hell for not having my permit ready within the legally required time frame. I reckon there is about a 10% chance they will do it on time.

I've bought 2 pistols there and I feel like i got a good price and it was easy as pie to do... Just make sure you go knowing what you want and a general idea of what they are going for (gunbroker.com is a good place to check, even while you are there). Some people will have high prices and not be willing to negogiate, even if it is cheaper at the next table. Others are perfectly fine with a little haggling- just make sure you look around and don't buy the first thing you see (I know someone that bought a glock when they first went in, and we saw it cheaper at like 5 other tables - up to 60 bucks at one place)

Yep +1 to walk the whole place and look at everyone selling what you're looking for. Don't be afraid to haggle a bit - it's saved me $20-30 versus just buying it outright. That's like them paying the sales tax for you.

Okay, I've got it in my brain that I was a cheap plinking rifle. As best I can tell, a .22lr is head and shoulders above everything else in terms of price for ammo, but I'm also looking at getting an old 7.62x54r mosin nagant-style rifle. That way, I'd get way more power, range, and accuracy for the same or less money. I'm not sure exactly what a good price is for one in good shape, but a quick google search turns up prices around $100-150. That sound about right?

The real question is with ammo. It looks like I can get tins of 440 rds for $80-100, but it's the old military surplus stuff. Aside from being corrosive, what's the difference between this and the shit that's $.20-1 per round?

Lastly, how viable is it to hand reload 7.62x54r rounds? The round seems pretty cheap as is, so it may be a bad idea. What sort of equipment would I need to do so and how much would it cost me? Will these rounds differ greatly in quality from the factory/military surplus stuff?

I may yet end up just getting a .22, but some old hunk of shit that hasn't been cleaned since some guy beat a nazi to dead with it in '43 has a much more manly appeal. Feel free to offer advice or experiences with other potentially economical plinking rifles.

If you want a plinking rifle, and something that you can shoot alot, get the .22lr. You can get 500 rounds for $20, and shoot as long as you want. A .22 can start at $150 and go through the roof. Without wind, you can easily use the .22 out to 200 yards with the right upgrades.
A Mosin isn't something you shoot a lot of. It has a kick like a shotgun. Depending on the model they go from $80-$300.

On the subject of x54R ammo...

The more expensive Privi stuff is better for two reasons - first, as you know, it's non-corrosive. That saves you from having to clean your entire rifle inside and out with water and solvents every single time you shoot. Second, it's Boxer primed, which leads to your reloading question.

Yes, x54R can be reloaded, and quite easily. Getting the brass is the hard part. I paid roughly .30 a piece for the brass I have now, but it's still cheaper after all is said and done than buying factory ammo of similar quality. I use .311 diameter projectiles that were pulled from x54 surplus, but you can use .308's with varying degrees of success. My super penny pinchers are hand-cast .314 bullets with gas checks. You'll use any medium-fast burning rifle powder(H335, H4895, Varget, TAC, etc.) and large rifle primers. On the whole this is all to say that yes, you can reload x54R, and at a net cost savings if you shoot somewhat frequently.

Awesome, that's exactly the info I was looking for. Mayhaps you can answer my follow ups here:

1) Rather than buying empty brass, can I buy factory non-corrosive brass and reuse those casings after the first firing? Any particular cartridge that you would recommend?

2) What's the lifespan of your brass? I've heard anywhere from 4 all the way to 10 uses. I understand x54r is going to be a pretty high pressure round, so life would be as good as some other stuff, but that obviously has a big impact on how much $$$ I could save.

3) Was reloading kit should I get? The simple Lee hand reloading dies seem to be cheap and effect, if slow, so those are my main prospect. What other accessories do I need? I've heard both ways as to the neccessity of a case trimmer? What about a brass tumbler?

Shoot for a while, decide what exactly you want in a rifle, then get a good centerfire rifle (and keep the .22).

I think I’ve given the wrong impression. I’m not new to shooting, just too cheap to buy my own shit most of the time. I’m been shooting at least a few times a year since I was a kid. I’m sure as hell not a pro, but I’m good enough to be ready for more of a “big boy” rifle.

With that said, and as I mentioned briefly earlier, I’m really interested in reloads. I just like the idea of creating and shooting your own ammo with your own individual loads. The savings are a nice benefit too. After crunching the numbers, 7.62 is still going to be pretty pricey to shoot. Getting a smaller center fire rifle should be much less costly in the ammo supplies department. I’m really looking hard at .22 hornet, as it would be way more fun than.22lr, easier and cheaper than x54r, and argueably the cheapest center fire in the game to reload due to small lead, small charge, and long case life. What will a cheapo .22 hornet cost me in the used market? Assuming I can get one for $250 or so, the price difference between it and the mosin should be closed within 400-500 rounds (judging by reload estimates).

I really hate those “I’ve made my decision, verify it for me” threads, so I don’t want to do that, I guess I just made my intentions unclear. I’ve shot plenty of .22lr and I’m just bored with it. These are my priorities:

- Center fire/cheaply reloadable
- Plinkable, but has some power (say…22WMR or more)
- Gun can be had for $250 or less (Around $200 is ideal)
- Will pull moist varieties of NRA trim
