Seeing those Sanford videos at the Lowe's it is AMAZING to me that no one got injured or killed. That is some massive damage. The manager who moved everyone quickly to the back saved A LOT of lives.

a lowes or a home depot, etc seems like one of the more terrifying places to be in a tornado
i was amazed that no one was killed or seriously injured, as well. i'm glad, but the store is like, FLAT. plus those things seem not that well built AND they have all those tall tall aisles of heavy ass shit that would just squash everyone.

man, I'm really glad nothing happened where i live, because I would've been woefully underprepared.
I had just driven down to Apex to the dump to get rid of some shit and just got back when the storm hit my neighborhood. I was just chillin in the living room with my roommates like "fuck it, I just live" 4/17/2011 12:12:08 AM |

We were really fucking lucky to miss it at our house. I had to leave work (very unlike me, for serious) to make sure my dogs were okay. Power came back on about an hour ago, though, and everybody I know is safe and sound. Shit was scurry. 4/17/2011 12:14:27 AM |

Wow, was just checking storm reports and they are saying that they had 14 fatalities in Askewville. I used to do some work out that way years ago. They are saying the fatalities are up to 24 in NC. 4/17/2011 2:04:30 AM |

Local news failed bigtime as far as warning people. My wife is terrified of tornadoes so we watched the weather channel all friday night and they kept saying over and over again that the Carolinas were going to be slammed. I go to WRAL.com, no mention of any storm coming unless I go into the weather section and click on Saturday. 4/17/2011 7:40:29 AM |

WRAL was saying as early as Tuesday-Wednesday that the risk for severe storms was going to be something to watch out for on saturday. All day Friday they were warning folks about our "moderate risk" from SPC and that it is very unusual to get that risk for NC, so take it seriously then yesterday, they were cutting in all morning warning folks to be prepared and we had been upgraded to "high" from SPC, which is almost like a guarantee of bad weather. I realize you are referring to their website, but i remember seeing it on there as well on the front page....can't remember which day i checked...probably friday night

my shed
my deck
my wife and i are out of town...a friend went and checked out our house and it looks like the house itself is probably okay...just the shed is trashed, the deck has some damage, and some of the raspberries were squished by the tree on the deck 4/17/2011 8:45:17 AM |

Power was out ALL over downtown last night in the south east region (ghetto region) and there were trees in the middle of like 10 different roads completely blocking with no cops or cones or anything haha.
this was at like 4 am

^^^ yes! i was just thinking that now i can claim it on homeowners insurance and build a shed that DOESN'T suck
honestly, there doesn't APPEAR to be much damage...for all i know, though, there could be roof damage or leaks or something (heaven forbid)
i never specifically put the shed on homeowners insurance, though, so perhaps its not covered? anyone ever made a homeowners insurance claim? the deck has a permit and as such SHOULD be covered under insurance, but it's not that expensive (or shouldn't be, looking at the pictures)...i'll check it out tomorrow

and i'm SO SO glad they cut down two trees recently that were dead and hanging very close to their house. it could've been a LOT worse. 4/17/2011 10:38:24 AM |

my brother was able to cut through the elementary school over there to get to his place...so that may be an option depending on where he/you need to get to after that. they stayed at my parents' house last night b/c of the gas leak, but have made it back in to start cleaning up.
3^wow...those are

sad stories coming out of bertie county
i live in a neighboring county and was home for the weekend to play a softball tournament
i have friends from the two towns in bertie that got hit. they have a combined 400 or so people so they are extremely close knit communities. After the Windsor flooding, it just feels like the residents cant catch a break 4/17/2011 11:29:50 AM |
