Hah i could give two shits about bassnectar or any of those dj shows. Not my cup of tea,
But going back to the previous pissing contest that i tried to let lie, to compare phish to new deal or a band like SciFi is laughable at best...really not even any musical similarities. And for fucks sake, the whole drug argument has been beaten to death. Some people use drugs at shows; some don't. Move on.
Cut Copy is extremely overrated and the show did absolutely nothing for me when i saw them. They literally stared blank faced, instruments in hand, at a room slammed full of people, because half of their show is being sampled, and they clearly did not have the musicianship or ability to carry on and entertain the crowd without the backing tracks. That's piss poor showmanship no matter how you look at it. 9/28/2011 4:28:19 PM |

Pretty sure there aren't any backing tracks at all in their live performances, just a lot of synths.
Also, regarding the drug culture of electronic jam bands. pointing out that many people have made the drug argument is not a good argument for refuting that. In other words, just because a lot of people have said it doesn't mean it isn't true. A huge part of the appeal of those bands isn't the music itself, but the drugs associated with their shows. 9/28/2011 4:42:33 PM |

You are wrong about Cut Copy's use of live backing tracks dude. Considering they have someone listed as "playing" the sampler doesn't help your case.
Quote : | "A huge part of the appeal of those bands isn't the music itself, but the drugs associated with their shows." |
See that statement is what I have a problem with. Yes, there is always going to be kids that are going to shows because of drug availability. I'll admit that. I'll even admit that the live electronic shows are more prone that type of shit than more organic 'jam' bands.
But I wouldn't say it's a huge part of the appeal. There are plenty of people who claim live electronic as their music of choice and are probably equally enthusiastic about the stuff as you are about your preferred bands, drugs or no drugs. Not trying to argue back and forth about it; it just frustrates me to see someone discredit good musicians, and some of which i deem to be 'good music' over the blanket stereotype that's it's just a bunch of spun out ravers jerking each other off with glowstick gloves

I do actually think Cut Copy uses a lot of live backing tracks. which is fine. but yeah, I'm pretty sure the 25 minute break in their show a few years ago only happened because their computer froze.
and this is a tired argument and no one is convincing anyone of anything, but I just really don't believe that shit like Pretty Lights/Disco Biscuits (imo very mediocre electronic music) would be popular if it wasn't fun to take ecstasy/lsd and get fucked up with large groups of people (yeah, that is fun. I've been there). I do think a large part of the popularity of those bands is the drug/party aspect. don't really think it's based on their actual musical talent. don't feel the same way about Phish (though it's still part of it) as I feel those are pretty fucking talented musicians who've been doing that shit for a long time. last time I'll give my opinion about this because i'm annoying myself by even writing this. 9/28/2011 10:53:09 PM |

Lol @ Shakori as an example. Obviously you have never been, but it is mostly bluegrass, folk, zydeco, and world music...with the occasional hip hop act. So not really sure what the point of posting a bunch of random folks' names and charges from a year and a half ago is.
I agree this whole thing could go around circles forever. I will try not to come back to this thread until i have an interesting show to post about.
This one may generate some hate, but I'm tempted to go check out Mike Doughty @ the Cradle on the 25th. 9/28/2011 11:38:21 PM |

speaking of Mangum..... there's now a video game that features Jeff Mangum fighting Hitler, lol http://www.thelmagazine.com/TheMeasure/archives/2011/10/07/things-that-now-exist-a-video-game-in-which-jeff-mangum-fights-hitler
Quote : | "It's called In the Time Machine Over the Sea, a reference to Jeff Mangum wishing he could save Anne Frank "in some sort of time machine" detailed in the Neutral Milk Hotel song "Oh Comely," and is a really awful video game, according to Pitchfork. The gist of it: You're Jeff Mangum — though game developer BroPortal often misspells it "Magnum" — and Anne Frank is your girlfriend. You're hanging out together when Hitler snatches her away, putting you in a debilitating depressive state where you can't work on your next album. That's when you call Thom Yorke — spelled "Tom Yorke" — who builds you a time machine to go back and save her, spurring an adventure through Avery Island, yada, yada, yada...
The game is obviously stock-full of references to Neutral Milk Hotel material (Avery Island, oh boy) and winks to plenty of indie signifies, but I can't help but find something distasteful about making Mangum's obsession over Anne Frank — what's more accurately him wanting to save her, not fall in love with her — the impetus of the whole thing. Seems slightly exploitative of Mangum, made all the harder to swallow by him not seeming like the type of guy who takes confessing personal feelings lightly. If you're into though, feel free to download the game here. I don't necessarily have any objections to hearing chiptune covers of Neutral Milk Hotel songs, so I'll be downloading the soundtrack from here." |

that's exactly why it was so hard to get into. there were only two acts playing at the time and everyone was ready to get their hopscotch on at one of the two. i got in, but that was by far the longest wait i had the entire weekend with VIP. based on how long the line was behind me and the amount of people inside kings for that show, it doesn't surprise me at all that other VIPs could not get in.
