I really like that about TOB, but it would be really nice to at least be competitive for regular division wins. I don't expect national championship runs but 1-13 against division road opponents is pathetic.11/24/2012 7:14:06 PM |

i'd agree 100% with that and have no problem with him losing on the regular to FSU and Clemson

He's 24-14 last three years, you can whine all you want he isn't getting fired.
I could see a change at either coordinator though. 11/25/2012 12:23:15 AM |

24-14?! Wonderful!
63 has always been my favorite winning percentage anyway.

He's more like the guys who got fired. Yow is tougher than fowler
Quote : | "O’Brien will take a 40-35 (22-26 ACC) record at N.C. State into the postseason.
By comparison, O’Brien is basically on the same pace as Amato and Mike O’Cain after six seasons. Both were fired after their seventh season.
Amato, through six seasons, was 46-28 overall and 23-25 in the ACC but then went 3-9 (2-6) in his seventh.
O’Cain was 35-34 overall and 23-25 in the ACC through six seasons and then was fired after going 6-6 (3-5) in 1999.
The measuring stick for N.C. State coaches since 1970 has been Dick Sheridan, who also stayed seven seasons at the school, going 52-29-3 (31-18-1) from 1986 through 1992 and getting his teams to six bowls. Heath problems led Sheridan to retire after his ‘92 team went 9-3-1 (6-2)." |

13 - 11 in conference. But yeah, it's nice that we've had some easier OOC teams to puff up the overall stat though.
Quote : | "I could see a change at either coordinator though." |
Given the last 6 years I don't see a change at either coordinator... which is why most people I know are on the fire TOB bandwagon... because he's welded to those coordinators. You have to fire him to get to the coordinators.
I don't see him being fired this season either, and yeah people will whine. They'll also become disinterested.11/25/2012 11:29:40 AM |

If he doesn't get fired this season he's 100% gone next year. We can't compete next year on either side of the ball.
So keeping him an extra year just gets us one year further behind in recruiting since no one commits to lame duck coaches. 11/25/2012 11:32:02 AM |

Over under 5 wins next year? Either way, TOB will get fired unless he wins 7 and there is no way that happens if we had to squeak out 7 with TOB's "best team". 11/25/2012 1:02:15 PM |

I would agree. But over the past few years FSU and Clemson have NOT been juggernauts. This year? Yes. But in general, over the past 5 years they have not been juggernauts.
FSU '07: 7-6 (4-4 '08: 9-4 (5-3) '09: 7-6 (4-4) '10: 10-4 (6-2) '11: 9-4 (5-3) FSU finished ranked in the top 25 3 times between 2007-2011 (highest ranking was 16th in 2010).
And Clemson over those same years: 9-4 (5-3), 7-6 (4-4), 9-5 (6-2), 6-7 (4-4), 10-4 (6-2). Clemson finished ranked in the top 25 3 times between 2007-2011 (highest ranking was 21 in 2007).
Since 2007, Clemson and FSU have combined for TWO ACC championships.
In other words, aside from this season, it is definitely a stretch to label these two teams as juggernauts.

Final statement:
Quote : | ""I appreciate the opportunity to have coached at North Carolina State University and I feel that the program is in a better place now than when I started," O'Brien said in a statement released by the school. "I'm proud of the young men that I have coached here, for their accomplishments on the field and in the classroom. Wolfpack football is as sound academically as it’s ever been with a [single year] APR of 990 to be reported this spring. I appreciate all of my coaches and wish them the best and I look forward to life after football."" |
I think he's definitely benefited the program overall, mostly academically, and we have a clean, high-middle of the road football team with great facilities and a good fan base. Seems to me that he did his job of stabilizing and advancing the football program from the Amato days.11/25/2012 2:06:57 PM |

The fact that he's talking about APR instead of wins in his final statement says it all, imo.
I have no problem with his attitude. I just have different priorities, as I imagine most of the fanbase does. 11/25/2012 2:21:25 PM |

I don't even have different priorities. I'm extremely grateful to TOB for what he's done for the program academically, and I think that is very important--at the end of the day this isn't a business. It's a team of young men (ostensibly college students) who still have a need for maturity, discipline, and priorities to be instilled in them.
However, the problem (and the reason TOB lost my support) is that the two are not mutually exclusive. You can have a team who are champions on the field and off, and that's what you have to keep chasing after. O'Brien didn't have the whole package. Our priority becomes, again, to find someone who does.11/25/2012 3:24:53 PM |
