rumours are flying that SOME of the new Halo 3 x360's have 65nm GPUs and CPUs.
That, coupled with the new bundles coming next month (Forza 2 + Marvel Ultimate Alliance packed in) might finally put me over the edge.
These consoles should be MUCH more reliable, in fact people are saying that the heatsinks have been reduced in the new machines, and that they are less noisy.
Also rumoured is that a new "core" system is coming, bundled with a wireless controller, 256MB memory unit, 5 XBLA games on disc, and HDMI. What, then, is the difference b/w this unit and the PRO version? Only the 20B HDD? Is there any other reason I might want to go for the PRO (or premium or whatever it's called now)? How necessary/useful is the HDD on 360?

I'm not saying Xbox Live isn't good, I'm saying it should be free. I mean come on, you're paying money for what is at it's core, a peer to peer service. Your consoles are doing most of the heavy lifting, MS just runs listen servers.

The HDD is very useful. I suggest not swimming in the waters without it. Not only for demos, but saved material it just is more seamless to have it appending to the hard disk instead of dealing with the memory unit. Just my .02 though.
Although I do applaud MS on the new Core package as it is a nice value at the reduced core price with the addition of memory and wireless controller. That memory card is fine and functional if you don't care about downloads/demos/marketplace content like videos. 9/28/2007 3:55:06 PM |

Sounds like I'll want the HDD then (at least the 20GB). It really sucks that you have to buy the proprietary MS tech, though... I know the 20GB is almost $100, how much is the 100GB?? 9/28/2007 3:59:30 PM |
Kainen All American 3507 Posts user info edit post |
100GB is too much unless you plan on following the soon to be IPTV and vidoes and all that jazz. You can stream everything via Media Center Edition or Windows Media Extender (if you have XP), so that amount of space is a bit much.
Also, shrike, don't even try it - Xbox live for 50 bucks in a year is worth every damn penny. The service kicks the bullshit out of PSN and is worth the money for them to keep it reliable, updated, privilege of friends implementations, improvements, matchmaking, the works.
I suggest getting this deal which always runs on amazon. $70 on Amazon w/ Live Vision Camera, UNO, Robotron, 200 MS points, another Headset, and 1 year of Xbox Live Gold. I love that deal. Something is hilarious about beating someone in Bomberman and then mooning the competition when you win and it gives you 5 seconds to taunt everyone through your camera. Also, I like the Camera for various Live Arcade games, Video Chat, and appending your mugshot to your guy's face in Tiger woods 08 or Tom Clancy Vegas. Also as your gamertag Pic face. Or your nutsack. That's always a hoot. 9/28/2007 4:04:21 PM |

Why are you comparing XBox Live to PSN? I never said PSN was better or even equal to XBox Live. All I said is that paying money for a peer to peer gaming service is complete and utter bullshit. If they are going to charge $50 a year, they should at least provide dedicated servers. MS didn't dare try to charge PC gamers money to play Halo 2 online, because they knew they would get laughed out of the room. It's a scam, and you know it. There is nothing XBox Live does that Steam doesn't do for free. Call me a fanboy all you want, but I'm just calling it like I see it.

No I totally disagree with you. I don't think it's a scam at all. Sure, Nintendo and Sony can offer free online play. But will it ever be as all-encompassing and as simply stream-lined as Xbox Live?
For less than $5 a month, I am happy to pay for XBox Live. Ecstatic even. "you get what you pay for" has been the moral of this story since the PS3 and Wii's release. We have seen piss poor online implementation, no singularity to the services, one game is good, one game is bad, one game has nothing, shitty 2nd-rate Second Life rip offs that never see light of day anyway, and friend codes ad infinitum and nauseum. I mean Xbox Live has muscle...I was impressed to see it bent but did not break in the advent of over 350,000 players online at once playing Halo3, and still nightly they average at 200K and yet it kept up and running. Sure if might have chugged for a couple of games initially, but when the next best console online service (PSN) couldn't handle 10K concurrent on Warhawk and 100K total sales the first week it's fucking hard to be critical of XBL given the landscape.
Any why are you using PC games to contrast with? You can't compare PC and console right now, its just not a fair argument. I also find this comical, "but since when did we ever have to pay for easy-to-use matchmaking service on a PC?" You're right, never, because we have rarely gotten it on the PC. Look at all the Frankenstein online PC matchmaking from the likes of EA/DICE. Anyone who has played any Battlefield game knows how horrible their service is. I could go on, there are and have been many more. Steam is fantastic mind you, but god damn does it have problems and compatibility issues with games. I think it's a fanastic service from a company whose model is signing on games to make it happen, but don't expect that out of a console yet. There's just not that backlog of games to do that with like Steam does.
Now I am not saying that every game's matchmaking has been fantastic on Xbox Live, but the lion share and majority of it has and delivered a Gold Standard to users out there, and that's why you hear people talk about how well it's implemented....and it all comes back to "you get what you pay for" 9/28/2007 4:35:59 PM |

Completely wrong. There are dozens of things about live that I love and they justify the yearly cost. It's a messaging service, a content distribution service, and most importantly a standardized platform.
Being able to get demos, free video and audio, rent movies, buy small games, invite my friends to play, send messages, highlights, clips, photos and chat are all awesome. And it all WORKS, and works well.

Dude, you really are a joke. You attack me in another thread for being some sort of Sony internet avenger, yet here you are jumping in guns blazing to defend having to pay for something that should be free.
Why shouldn't I compare PC and consoles? Every single games that wasn't an MMORPG has been free to play online on the PC. If you're going to charge me money, I better be getting something in return. The single most important thing to an online gaming service is having fast, reliable servers to play on. Not matchmaking, not friends lists, not any of that other bullshit you mentioned. Actually being able to, you know, play the gamei is what counts. Compared to free online on the PC, the 360 pales in comparison. 16 player games? That's it? Battlefield 2 has 64 player servers. Nice try bringing that game up but it's no comparison. When Live can reliably handle that sort of player load, then you can start bringing up that other shit like friends lists and matchmaking. Even the lowly PSN can handle 40 player games. What the fuck is MS doing with your money if they can't even provide the same gaming experience that the free services can't?
I'm glad that you're happy to give MS your money. It's great for the industry. But it's still bullshit and it's still a scam.
Quote : | "Being able to get demos, free video and audio, rent movies, buy small games, invite my friends to play, send messages, highlights, clips, photos and chat are all awesome." |
You do realize those things cost money too? MS is making shit tons of money off movie rentals and buying games. Why do they have to charge you to play games online on top of that? You ever heard of XFire? It does every thing as far as maintaining a friends list and inviting them to play games. And it's free.
Quote : | "They do. Do you even realize the scale of Xbox Live's datacenters?" |
No they don't. Every online game you've played on XBox Live has been peer to peer. You're paying for a listen server. Believe.

This has NOTHING to do with the Live service. It's a cap in the GAMES. Thereare 360 games that have 24 and 32 player multiplayer. DiRT supports up to 100 players. It has nothing to do with the SERVICE. Also, like it or not, Xbox Live is remarkably more reliable and consistent than ANY matchmaking/online offering I've EVER used on the PC. Finding a good game on BF2 /1942 was a fucking nightmare and a crapshoot most of the time.
Also you are forgetting that you DONT HAVE TO PAY TO PLAY ONLINE. There is still the xbox live silver option, or KAI/System Link if you dont want to use the service at all. It's not a fucking scam, you are just stupid.

There are games that have a cap of more than 16 players? Games that anyone would actually want to play? Point them out to me. Team Fortress 2 has a 32 player cap on the PC, but a 16 player cap on the 360. Obviously the game wanted to have more, but your pay to play online service couldn't handle it.
And you do have to pay to play online. The XBox Live silver option only lets you download shit and talk to friends. 9/28/2007 5:19:55 PM |
Noen All American 31346 Posts user info edit post |
You can use KAI to play online for free. No, you do not have to pay to play.
DiRT supports 100 players, Frontlines and DoA 4 support 32, BF2 and CoD2 support 24, and dozens support the 16 cap limit.
Quote : | "Obviously the game wanted to have more, but your pay to play online service couldn't handle it. " |
Again you are being fucking stupid. Microsoft isn't capping the limits, the developers are. THEY make the decision to lower the player limit to ensure better quality of play. Obviously the DEVELOPER had a good reason to drop the player cap.
outside of battlefield, I've never seen another game where the move from 16 to 32 players did anything other than make lag unbearable, cause constant drops and overall make the experience that much shittier. I don't think I've ever even made it through a 32 or 64 player game of anything without at least one timeout or drop from someone.
