supposedly something about not being evaulated on the aau circuit. i don't know, whenever we have a guy packpride comes up w/ some excuse that they're not highly rated. i think this one's legit though, the ga hs basketball forums, who hate nc state, love harrow.

we NEED NEED NEED to hold on to him and leslie.

^It has everything to do with him missing time on the AAU circuit due to a back injury and moving from NC to GA and missing time in HS as well.

He's growing, and he's about 6'1" right now, which is perfect for a PG. Telep loves him, the GA HS people love him, and a lot of people were getting involved right before he committed to us. He has the potential to grow another couple inches as well (he has giant feet)

He might be the best player in GA next year, which says a lot. A lot of people think he's a top 10 player for his class (his HS coach might just being talking him up, but he's lightyears ahead of a guy going to GT next year)

This whole recruiting process has me kinda bummed. I mean, memphis has officially vaulted into the upper shelf of my most hated teams. To my knowledge they have really only nabbed cousins from us but it feels like so much more, and probably will be with wall. I don't see how we will be anything but bottom dwellers once again in the acc next year without another decent big man in the '09 class.

Even if we somehow land wall I still see us as a middle of the pack acc team next year.

Wall would instantly make us a tourney team IMO. Without him we struggle for the NIT. He's that good...

I've said it before but we're talking about a guy who, in my opinion, would be the #1 pick THIS YEAR in the draft if there was no age limit...

He would be the biggest get at State since DT...

2010 players interested in State

Rankings go Scout/Rivals

Name - Pos - * rating - Pos ranking - Overall ranking

Victor Oladipo - SG - ***/**** - NR/15 - NR/57

We have yet to offer this DeMatha product, but he could earn an offer very soon. DeMatha is Strickland and Lowe's high school. Pete Strickland is recruiting him.

Hyattsville (MD) DeMatha
AAU: Triple Threat
Ht: 6-foot-4
Wt: 180 lbs
GPA: 3.2

Schools Interested (known offers in italics)
Clemson
Maryland
James Madison
Indiana
Massachusetts
Providence
Virginia Tech
Virginia
Xavier
George Mason
VCU
SMU

N.C. State
Pittsburgh
Georgia Tech
Texas
Georgia
Boston College
Miami (FL)
UNC-Greensboro
Villanova
Kansas State

Brian Richardson - SG - ***/NR - NR/NR - NR/NR

Richardson is still being evaluated by the scouts. Expect him to get fully evaluated in this upcoming AAU season. Pete Strickland is heading up his recruitment.

Wilson (NC) Greenfield
Ht: 6-foot-4
Wt: 170 lbs

Schools Interested (known offers in italics)
George Washington
South Carolina
Virginia
UNC-Wilmington

Arizona State
Auburn
Clemson
Marquette
N.C. State
Virginia Tech
VCU

Tashawn Mabry - SF - ***/*** - NR/NR - NR/NR

Rumor is that Mabry's offer may not be firm for one reason or another (we may want to make sure his academics are in order).

Rocky Mount (NC) Rocky Mount
AAU: CP3 All-Stars
Ht: 6-foot-5
Wt: 200 lbs

Schools Interested (known offers in italics)
N.C. State
Clemson

LSU
Maryland
Miami
Wake Forest
Oklahoma

Reco McCarter - SF - ***/*** - NR/22 - NR/128

McCarter seems to like State and is very athletic, which would be good for helping us push the tempo. FWIW Rivals has him ranked higher than what CJ Williams was last year, and we can all agree that CJ has been a pleasant surprise.

Goldsboro (NC) Wayne Country Day School
AAU: North Carolina Gaters (will probably play with Carolina Flight this year though)
Ht: 6-foot-7
Wt: 180 lbs

Schools Interested (known offers in italics)

NC State

Auburn
Virginia
Wake Forest
Oklahoma
Wisconsin
Miami (FL)
Cincinnati
Maryland
UNC-Wilmington
South Carolina

Luke Cothron - PF - ****/***** - 16/7 - NR/17

Cothron originally hails from Alabama and a desire to return to his home state could potentially be there. We have made up a lot of ground with him and have had him visit for two games. We supposedly made a big impression on him with our fans and facilities. Monte Towe is heading up the recruitment of the big man. He will likely wait awhile to decide b/c he wants to see who all the different schools will be bringing in to play alongside him.

Red Springs (NC) Flora Macdonald Academy
AAU: Southeast Elite
Ht: 6-foot-9
Wt: 220 lbs

Schools Interested (known offers in italics)
Connecticut

"Although Baylor was his latest trip, his visit to Memphis still seemed to be on his mind.

“It’s still wide open,” he said. “I’ve got all of my schools, but I think Memphis is in the lead right now. I think Memphis has been in the lead for a while, since I’ve come from these visits, but it’s so tight it could change today or tomorrow.”"

"While Memphis is certainly positioned nicely, there’s still a ways to go in Wall’s recruitment. Thus far he’s taken official visits to Kansas, Baylor and Memphis. Miami is next on his visit list.

“I’m going to take one more to Miami and then I’ll probably take unofficial visits to North Carolina State and Duke,” he told Scout.com.

Once he finishes his trips, a decision could come shortly after. Actually, Wall, Scout.com’s No. 2 prospect, is hoping to announce at the Jordan Brand All-American game, which will be played at Madison Square Garden in April.

“I think the Jordan game would be a good time for it,” Wall said. “A lot of my family is going to come to the game. If that doesn’t work out then I’ll do it when I get back home.”"

i'm not certain, but i thought that was because some PP members saw the articles posted here and complained, whereas I have no prior knowledge of anyone from scout.com ever griping about TWW

if he goes to memphis i'll make the best out of it though...i'll put a whole bunch of money down in vegas on memphis winning it all next year

Assuming Evans leaves, they should have five scholarships to give.

As far as Memphis:

If 1/4 your team is graduating and another 1/4 going to the NBA every year, then you can probably get away with offering that many scholarships.

Undefeated? Yeah, and Carolina was going to go undefeated this year too.

Maybe in the regular season....

Let's keep in mind that these are freshmen....and how rare it is for a team to actually go undefeated. It's been 33 years since there has been an undefeated team, and with the parity in college athletics today, it's highly, highly unlikely that it will happen again ever IMO.

Sucks to hear about Cousins, but at least we were in the running for him. In the previous decade we wouldn't be in the running for these kids that we're missing out on now.

^disagree slightly

what is the difference in not being in the running for elite kids but being in the running and not getting them? I don't see a difference. Maybe it gives us a little more credibility on the recruiting trail, being involved with these kids, but if we aren't getting any of them then what difference does it make?

we aren't one of these major powers. We have to be smarter, scout better, and recruit harder to get the kids we want. The strategy of being involved with all these top guys works great for the schools that get their share (Memphis, UNC, Duke, UCLA, etc) but for us it doesn't work as well. If we spend all our time on these great guys and then get none, I worry our recruitment of some of the better second tier guys that we actually have a great shot at getting goes way down. Recruit one star, maybe two (if one is close to home), and then go get the second tier guys and find some sleepers.

Lowe can recruit. He got a 5* McDonald's All-American and didn't have to hire his coach to get him either. He should have gotten another McD's AA in Brown. Brown was a 5* early on and probably should still be one. He got passed over for some guys that are rated lower than him.

Seriously though how are the Wear twins McD's AAs and they are only 9 and 10 spots above Howell on Scout's Top 100, and are 17 and 18 spots behind him on Rivals Top 150? And don't tell me that it's just b/c they went to UNC. That may be so, but I want something besides that.

well, you can't win them all

look at it this way--would you have been pleased with our class if we never even started to recruit these 5*s? I think a lot of the negative reaction towards recruiting is because we missed these guys, but since they are one and done, its not like the program is hurt. Our chances of making the tournament next year, yeah, but long term this isn't a big deal.

personally, I'm fucking pissed. I was really banking on getting at least one of these guys. If we had a stronger season, maybe things would have been different. Sid will keep getting in with these types of guys...hopefully we'll have some more incentive to attract them in the next few years.

but yeah, this is rough.

So if we assume no Wall, and Costner stays, what's our starting 5/rotation next year? I live abroad, so i don't get to watch the team but i follow it...i don't really have an idea of the new guys.

Starters:

Javi
Lo Brown
CJ Williams
Costner
Tracy Smith

Bench:

Mays
Howell
Wood
Thomas
Horner
Degand
Ferguson

?

From what I've read and seen from Lo Brown, it looks like he has to start from Day 1. That bench doesn't look too bad, at least compared to the last few seasons...really young, but more talent. Hopefully Howell and Wood with give some type of impact, and Mays will keep improving. We look like we'll be more athletic, with more experience. I think we'll improve one 10th in the conference, maybe have a shot at the tourney, we'll have to see how they play together first.

But...if we keep Sid around, and bring in our 2010 class that we have now, our roster will look like this:

Javi
Tracy Smith
Mays
CJ Williams
Johnny Thomas
Lo Brown
Richard Howell
Scott Wood
CJ Leslie
Ryan Harrow

That is a significant upgrade in talent...and they're all Sid's players. Herb's players were not aggressive, they were afraid to drive and shoot. These guys are not, and they're more athletic.

A lot of people claimed Favors, Wall and Cousin's were 1-and-dones, so they'd only hurt the program...just like JJ. Now they're crying and bitching, you can't have your cake and eat it too...shut the fuck up from now on. That negativity will only keep these guys away...I'm not blaming you, but that's being a shitty fan, and if you're a shitty fan, you're a faggot.

Lets just hope its not wishful thinking.

And there really is no "good" that top players in the country are considering us. You're never gonna hear a recruit say, "Hey, NC State sent me a letter. Weren't they the same team that was in the top 5 for Cousins, Favors, and Wall last year. Man, they were kinda getting close to getting all three of those guys because I saw them listed as also considered after each one committed. I think I'll consider them more strongly now because of that."

The only good from it is that maybe our coaches are getting experience in recruiting the top talent??? And I say "maybe", because they don't seem to be too successful at landing them. Right now I'd rather land 4-star guys, then recruit 5-star guys for two years, have them commit somewhere else, and then have to settle for 3-star guys. That being said, I haven't followed recruiting as much the past few years, so I don't know exactly how great our class is shaping out (it does seem to be doing okay), but it looks like the fallbacks listed above are the of the general "fallback" variety.

Wasn't the Costner/McCauley/Fells class ranked in the top 20? Great, so Lowe can finish 10/12/10 in the ACC with a top 20 class. I'm so excited about the next 3 years.
