hahaha kaka elbowed that guy in the chest and the dude pulled a Rivaldo and started holding his face
peace kaka. the other guy should be yellowed for dramatizing an injury to the wrong part of his body

It's getting a little too chippy out there. The Brazilian players know they've won it and just look like they're cruising till the end. Someone needs to get a red card.

the US game wouldn't have been terrible, if it weren't for a disallowed goal. i mean, some of the calls were bad (the handball in the first half, dempsey getting away with an elbow) but those could be chalked up to run-of-the-mill missed/poor calls, and those will happen. taking a goal away is criminal, and for fifa standards, it tipped the game from being a sub-standard called game to a terribly called game.
and on that same note, i wouldn't have called that a handball during the run of the game on fabiano, because i wouldn't take away a goal unless i was 100% certain was illegal. it was a handball, but it wasn't obvious, and i don't think many people even noticed it during the run of the game (but i certainly wouldn't act all chummy with the offender later in the game about a missed call). i don't think i even saw any ivory coast players complaining after the goal. i can excuse missing that, because fabiano was able to reduce its appearance (twice, actually). also, i think wearing long sleeve shirts often sets up opportunities for handballs like this to go unnoticed.
the game got chippy at the end, because brazil was wasting time, and the ivory coast was frustrated, but i don't necessarily think that it is a case of the game getting too out of control, but kaka's second yellow was very petty, and i agree that the game could have maintained a little more order at the end if a red were shown for the cleats to the shin challenge. although a part of me thinks the conditions set themselves up for tempers to flare at the end, and at some point there is only so much the ref can do to prevent it.6/20/2010 7:39:21 PM |

the problem, whether or not ivory coast got mad, was that all their studs up challenges were not punished. and thus allowed for it to get chippy in the end 6/20/2010 8:06:08 PM |

Italy are one of the reasons for me why football, and the World Cup in particular, is the best. No other sport can come close to providing opponents that genuinely live up to the level of pure, unmitigated awfulness Italy regularly provides. Sure, there may be teams/contenders you don't like because a local rivalry or whatever but Italy are basically Dick Dastardly personified. You may be thinking about a different challenge. Shoulder to shoulder was a simple foul at most, I am talking about grabbing him with both arms and wrapping him up from behind to the ground so he couldn't get the 1 v 1 on the ball from Donovan.

^that was a justifiable yellow. i think if you go back a few pages, everyone seemed to agree on that. it would have been a red if altidore had a straight away 1v1, but he was making a move away from goal, taking away the "obvious goal scoring opportunity". (of course, the completely objective/unbiased commentary of john harkes wanted a red)
regarding the germany game, it was tightly officiated. i think in general, refs have to find the balance between tightly officiated games (germany-serbia) and loose games where the contact is high (brazil-ivory coast). both of those games are examples where the balance wasn't found in either direction, but if i had to choose, i personally would rather a ref let the players play than take control of the game and act as an authoritarian. the germany game was bad, but it didn't alter the outcome of the game. after the 20th minute or so, players should have been able to adjust their play to accomodate the tight officiating, and they didn't. so any complaints from germany fans really sound like sour grapes.

im pretty sure what we do here in american has no effect on what goes on in south africa i think the are several unrelated reasons why this cup sucks so far.
1. many major countries lost their major stars to old age or injury, ie zidane, ronaldinho, henry etc italy lost many, france, germany, brazil, etc 2. many star players are playing like shit 3. teams unable to do basic things like passing, trapping, dribbling to a shockingly bad level, and if you dont believe me, just watch some bbc analysis, they're just as stunned as i am 4. vuvuzelas, perhaps the biggest problem, players cannot concentrate with a barrage of chaotic noise surrounding them, reducing their game IQ to that of a high school player
but hopefully next round will be better6/21/2010 12:15:39 AM |

^^
1- henry is playing, ronaldinho is just not good enough to play for brazil. zidane was old 4 years ago. 2- this happens every world cup. part of the excitement to me, is watching the young players define their role. in 2002, i had very little idea of what to expect from miroslav klose and podolski, and i was blown away by their play. part of the brilliance of the world cup is watching the torch being passed. 3- i guess, but i don't think it's that bad. at least not outside of france and england 4- i'm far more tired of the vuvuzela complaining. it's not that bad, and players complaining sound like they're looking for a cop-out. seriously, every domestic league has some sort of crazy fan behavior, so i don't see how this is any different. and many teams are still playing well, so it's hard for me to believe this argument. the only good thing about the vuvuzela bashing is that it takes the focus away from the usual "bahhhh, the ball sucks and we can't control it" whining that we usually hear/
all-in-all, i think the cup is doing fine. the first round is always a mixed bag of brilliant/horrible/conservative play, and it's often not until the last match-day of each group where the level of play really takes off. i doubt that will be any different this year.

1. henry is on the bench, rhonaldinho was the best in the world in 2006, so these losses have impact if new players dont take over 2. i agree except that new great players are no where to be seen, we've had plenty of games to find young talent and i havent seen it 3. oh its that bad, just watch any club soccer match then come back to this world cup and you'll see it 4. its the only explanation that fits, being that it affects everyone, and is obviously annoying, perhaps the fact that you hear this complain a lot might be cause its true and no one in FIFA is doing anything about it 6/21/2010 12:39:20 AM |
mls09 All American 1515 Posts user info edit post |
1) i know henry is on the bench, because he's not in top form, and 2006 was 4 years ago, which is a lot of time for a player to lose form. 2) higuain? 3) some of the world cup games have been quite exciting to me, maybe not to you, whatever. i certainly don't go in to every match expecting the play i get on fifa '10 4) vuvuzelas cannot possibly be more annoying/distracting than:
people only hate on them because they are new/foreign. the great teams will overcome the minor nuisance they create. in fact, the great teams already have

is no one up watching Portugal demolish North Korea?
I was pretty upset with the first few days of action, but pretty much from Chile's first game until now the action has been much much better. Watching the Brazilian team play yesterday (before it got out of hand) was a thing of beauty. Today Portugal is playing backyard soccer against the north koreans, this is crazy, 3 goals in the first 15 minutes of the second half.
I think the tourney is getting better and it will continue to get better as we move to the knockout stage. I think some of the final group stage games will be good and some will be snorefests for teams that are already advancing, but overall after the first round of games was completed the play has been much more entertaining
oops, guess I took too long to make my post.
