Truth.
There are spans of pages, i.e. crowd-streams-of-consciousness, that are some of the funniest shit you will ever read in your life (all hyperbole aside). Some absolute gems of creativity. I know everyone is hating on BEU and the self-promotion but the Hitler-UNC video was born in this thread. Clever photoshopping and some excellent and halaarious gifs.
N&O has an interesting article on the history of the live wolf mascot. this little tidbit was funny and interesting. didn't realize "Cow College" had been around for so long.

I dont know. I was under the impression that the NCAA can swing it's hammer's force-o-meter a little high and a little low depending on the reputation of the school. Is this true, or have I picked up the wrong impression? 9/17/2010 7:59:21 AM |

That is true, but UNC's got something a bit different going on here. They've got a double whammy of the agent problems + the academic issues.
Any leeway UNC could have gotten on one or the other as a result of past reputation was shot when it became a two-pronged investigation. The NCAA will probably be more inclined towards medium-level punishments instead of just slaps on the wrist. 9/17/2010 8:04:33 AM |

^^^ i think another point that can't be stressed enough and should indeed be overstressed is this whole bullshit about the Carolina Reputation.
that whole reputation has been prefaced by the fact that they have simply never been caught so the assumption is that they are squeaky clean. This investigation may just ruin the absolute shit out of that and it already is to a great extent. National sportswriters and commentators now have UNC-CH as they butt of jokes etc. The Cow is out of the barn.
It's just so telling too when local beat writers and homers complain to Gregg Doyel all the while twitter accts in Cali and non-local writers are scooping the hell out of long established newspapers and TV stations who should have bou coup insider contacts at major sports universities. 9/17/2010 8:44:53 AM |

finally! I've been Jones'in for more bad/good news
Quote : | "UNC's Marvin Austin giving testimony By Kelly Naqi ESPN \ North Carolina defensive tackle Marvin Austin is appearing before the Secretary of State's office to give testimony about allegations into whether agents and financial advisors violated the Uniform Athletes Agents Act, a source with knowledge of the investigation into UNC's football program said.
Austin began testifying at 9:30 a.m. ET Friday, the source said. A representative from the North Carolina Department of the Secretary of State's office was not immediately available for comment.
The North Carolina Uniform Athlete Agent Act requires agents to register with the Secretary of State's office and inform a school's athletic director within 72 hours of reaching a contractual agreement with an athlete. Agents are prevented from furnishing anything of value to athletes before a contractual agreement has been reached. Failure to comply is a felony.
The office of the North Carolina Department of the Secretary of State subpoenaed Austin earlier this month as part of its investigation into the alleged involvement of some sports agents and financial advisors with UNC student athletes.
When reached by telephone, Austin's attorney, Christopher Lyons, would not confirm whether Austin is testifying, but added, "Marvin Austin is fully cooperating in their investigation and we'll have no further comment until the investigation is concluded."
In a concurrent investigation, UNC is being investigated by the NCAA for improper benefits allegedly received by some of its football players and for possible academic misconduct. The NCAA is looking into allegations that a tutor who used to work for North Carolina football coach Butch Davis wrote papers for a number of Tar Heels players, including Austin, wide receiver Greg Little and defensive end Robert Quinn. Quinn, Little and Austin also are being investigated for allegedly receiving improper benefits from agents. Austin has been questioned about multiple trips to Florida for parties and for a trip to California for training sessions.
In addition, the NCAA is looking into the relationship between former North Carolina defensive line coach John Blake and California-based agent Gary Wichard. Blake, who resigned on Sept. 5, used to work for Wichard's company, Pro Tect Management.
A source told ESPN that Blake has already been subpoenaed by the Secretary of State's office and may testify as early as next week. Blake has not returned messages left on his cell phone.
Austin, a senior, is projected as a possible first-round NFL draft pick. He is serving an indefinite suspension for violating unspecified team rules and has not played this season.
South Carolina tight end Weslye Saunders, who also has been questioned by the NCAA for possible improper agent contact, was dismissed by the Gamecocks on Wednesday. Saunders allegedly accompanied Austin to a Miami party thrown by an agent or his representatives earlier this year.

just went and checked the websites of the news organizations within 15miles of the fracas and not a fucking peep about this. Huge story. Has the potential to ruin an Athletic dept. and they are literally covering it up.

I feel like Saunders dismissal should have prompted austins as well ( especially since Austin seems to be more involved).
I think this just proves that UNC doesn't feel like they are going to get hit very hard.
It just looks so bad on UNC that only one person has "stepped down." if I was a UNC grad I would be more worried about the value of my degree rather than a guy that's about to make millions in the NFL. 9/17/2010 11:22:26 AM |

Different things. You can't just kick a kid out and take his scholarship away for no reason. They have to suspend him from playing and go through the motions to figure out the truth (if the ever even do)...

Hmmm... I guess I just don't understand this. I don't feel my degree is any less valuable because a dude that couldn't even read stayed eligible for two years playing basketball here back in the day...

If Austin somehow gets a degree, or anyone involved in the cheating scandal, it devalues the degree. If you allow cheating and aren't punished by expulsion or failing the class (like the common person would be), then the degree is devalued as they're handing them out to anyone. What's to say that this isn't a common occurrence amongst normal students? If you're a UNC graduate, you should be outraged that these kids aren't kicked out as it hurts your degree's image/value by allowing someone who is accused of cheating to get their degree.9/17/2010 11:42:26 AM |

^^^ Well, I'm different than you then. Every high-major school's athletes have special conditions and things handed to them. Even a top three public school like Cal relaxes admissions standards and minimum eligibility requirements for athletes.
Just a rough guess, but I'd say at least half of the kids on an given college basketball team have no business being in school and certainly no business graduating.
UNC broke the rules and will get punished for it, as they should. But not because I'm some moral beacon who thinks all cheaters should be punished. Rather, they should be punished because they didn't do a good job hiding it -- a form of Darwinism.
Quote : | "What's to say that this isn't a common occurrence amongst normal students?" |
This is silly. I'd feel pretty awful if someone held Chris Washburn's dumb ass against me. The normal student doesn't bring in millions upon millions of dollars and there is no reason for UNC or Duke or State or ECU to care about the normal student.

That's exactly the lack of responsibility we expect UNC-CHeaters to bring to this conversation.
"Everyone" is not doing it. This is evidenced by the fact that "Everyone" does not have NCAA investigations going on on their campus.
Until UNC students, alumni, and faculty can really own this thing and say, "You know, we obviously haven't been following this UNC Way we've been talking about for years," then you can't be trusted for having any integrity at all. Regardless of whether or not you think you should be compared to athletes at your school you are. 9/17/2010 12:07:28 PM |
