The Citadel shot very well, actually. My last box of ammo was some cheap Blazer that wouldn't push the slide back enough to lock, but the other 2 types cycled well each time. 3/22/2010 2:42:27 PM |

Anyone have a 9mm carbine? They sound like a hell of a good time, but pretty useless, practically speaking. I'm thinking of the Kel-Tec or the Hi-Point, which is cheaper but may be the ugliest thing I've ever seen. 3/22/2010 5:31:24 PM |

but it would be at the bottom of my list of things to get- i'd look at the gsg-5 before this (still looks fun, but even cheaper to have fun with) 3/22/2010 5:55:40 PM |

a semi auto .22 rifle would be a lot better choice than one of the 9 mm carbines imo. fun to plink with, cheaper to shoot, and at least you can go squirrel hunting with it. 3/22/2010 6:09:34 PM |

I have a Marlin 60 that I'm constantly shooting(being able to shoot in any direction from your front or back porch can be tempting) but I'm wanting to get something with a little more punch that I can buy(the weapon itself), shoot, and reload economically. 9mm just seemed like a good option. 3/22/2010 6:18:28 PM |

Nothing too justifiable, but that's how hobbies go, I think.
In all sincerity, I love spending time around guns and I like working with my hands. Since I'm a student, I have way more time than money so I want to get into reloading. Once I pony up the cash for the reloading setup, I can afford to shoot more without feeling bad about it, but more importantly, it'll be a way to save some cash and spend time with my hobby without actually spending a shit ton of money shooting. I've been doing loads and loads of research, but my wants are all over the map. Smaller rifle cartridges like .223 would be fun, but still ~20 cent/handload. Semi-auto pistol cartridges(9mm, .380 acp or .45 acp) would be good(I'm considering a CCW) and a bit cheaper. .38/.357 would be cheaper still, and simpler to reload, but revolvers aren't really my thing. It'll be at least a couple months before I buy anything, but doing the research and shopping is half the fun.
Sorry, that got sort of "TWW is a blog" ish. 3/22/2010 6:44:34 PM |

9mm carbines are fun. Target loads in a 9mm carbine length barrel are packing more punch than loads from a 357 magnum pistol. I own and enjoy a Cailco in 9mm, though I am in the market for a sig magazine model KelTec Sub 2000 as a 'packs up smaller' secondary carbine choice. 3/22/2010 6:54:01 PM |

I'm eyeballing the shit out of a Kel-Tec P-11. Thoughts on this gun? I'll probably use it for CCW eventually, but for now, I want to just play around with it, become familiar and comfortable with the recoil, and, as I mentioned earlier, start reloading. At $269, it doesn't seem like a bad deal, either. I'd especially love to hear from people who have put some rounds down the barrel. 3/25/2010 6:36:13 PM |

^^I have a P11 with the 9mm, 40, and 357 sig barrels and the slide kit. Its a decent little gun. HOWEVER, like most small guns, weak or limp wristing will turn it into a jam o matic, and you will need to fluff n buff the entire gun to make it smooth on the trigger pull, or as smooth as a double action only gets. I use it as a 1st step backup gun most days. 3/25/2010 9:59:45 PM |

I went and held the kahr pocket 9mm today at Hills and it's too small. I don't think the p-11 is going to work, as I understand it is very similar in size. Are there any good 9mm semis for $300ish OTD that are just a little larger, as in still compact/subcompact size? Maybe my research is just lacking, but it seems like most manufacturers just shoot(*rimshot*) for full size or tiny, and rarely a compromise in between. 3/26/2010 2:15:38 PM |

I think at this point it sounds like the best idea is to wait for the Dixie Gun and Knife Show coming on May 1-2, and just put your hands on everything you can find until one feels right.
Specs and stats online, and even pictures and video reviews, just don't compare to having it in your own hand. 3/26/2010 4:29:57 PM |

It really depends on the gun. The 10/22 and most guns in general get wiped down with an oiled patch on all metal surfaces (including the bore) and the light film of oil is left there. The bolt gets a drop or half drop of oil where it rubs the inside of the action. High wear internals also get a half drop of oil. These parts include the outside of a semiauto pistol barrel and hood, recoil guide rods, trigger transfer bars, pump shotgun action bars, etc. Don't oil the trigger parts other than the light coat left from an oiled patch. Bolt action lugs get a light coat of grease as do hinge pins and the rails of some pistols if they're going to be shot a whole lot in warm weather.3/28/2010 1:51:04 AM |
FenderFreek All American 2805 Posts user info edit post |
^To add to that, I completely tear down and clean the 10/22's once every few thousand rounds because they tend to get gummy inside the trigger pack. I take every screw, pin, spring, rod, everything out - hose it down with simple green, scrub the hell out of it with some toothbrushes, then dry it out and wipe everything down with CLP. Put it all together again(very carefully) and it feels like a brand new gun.
Everything else doesn't get shot enough to need more than a cursory inspection and basic cleaning after a range trip. 3/28/2010 11:15:15 AM |

So I just bought a high caliber spinning target for my shottie and a .40 cal handgun.. If I put it about 20 yards away - is it safe? I read that steel targets should be shot at 100 yards with a shotgun slug, but those are the fancy ones that fall down. As a mere youngin' (20), I can't buy a pistol straight up. Obviously, my papa can buy one and I can shoot it and whatnot, then "buy" it from him after my birthday. However I've recently heard that if he gets it, as a direct family member, he can gift it to me, and since I'm 18+, it's perfectly legal for me to own/possess. With that said, I've also heard exactly the opposite. So, can anyone shed some light on NC's confusing-ass gun laws? 3/29/2010 12:10:05 AM |

I'm no lawyer, but here's some info...
http://www.grnc.org/firearms.htm
Quote : | "North Carolina law does not currently address specific age requirements for the purchase of weapons. Rather, it looks to the federal standards for such restrictions. Under federal law, 18 U.S.C. § 922(b)(1), federally licensed gun dealers are prohibited from selling handguns to persons under the age of 21. Further, all other purchasers of shotguns and rifles are required to be at least 18 years of age." |
Quote : | "North Carolina General Statute § 14-269.7 provides that it is a misdemeanor for any person under the age of 18 to possess or carry a handgun...." |
Quote : | "North Carolina General Statute G.S. § 14-315 prohibits any person from selling, offering for sale, giving away, or in any way transferring to a person under the age of 18, any pistol cartridge...
This statute further provides that it is a Class H Felony for a person to sell, offer for sale, give, or in any way transfer to a person less than 18 years of age, any handgun as defined in N.C.G.S. § 14-269.7. Additionally, an individual guilty of this offense shall forfeit the proceeds of any sale made in violation of this section. This law does not apply under the following circumstances: A. when the handgun is lent to a minor for temporary use if the minor's possession of the handgun is lawful under N.C.G.S. § 14-269.7 and G.S. § 14-316 and is not otherwise unlawful; B. when the handgun is transferred to an adult custodian, pursuant to Chapter 33A of the North Carolina General Statutes, and the minor does not take possession of the handgun except that the adult custodian may allow the minor temporary possession of the handgun in circumstances in which the minor's possession of the handgun is lawful under N.C.G.S. § 14-269.7 and N.C.G.S. § 14-316 and is not otherwise unlawful;" |
Basically your dad can buy a handgun and lend it to you. He cannot give/sell/transfer ownership to you even though it seems like he should be able to do so. NC law says it can be transfered to you if you're over 18, but any transfer requires a purchasing permit...which the sheriff wont give to you unless you're 21.3/29/2010 12:46:12 AM |

Steel targets are always a hazard to some point (of course, firing a gun is a hazard in itself).
Is it a spinning target that hangs down? If so, I wouldn't worry about the distance unless you're right in front of it or perpendicular to it with someone else shooting at it. When you shoot at a spinning target the bullet is going to bounce at an angle that's perpendicular to the rotation of the target, meaning somewhat downward (or somewhat to the side if it rotates on a vertical axis). So don't put the target 10 feet off the ground then shoot at it (no brainer).
I think the biggest steel target hazards are big heavy free standing plates shot with jacketed bullets. If you shoot one of those there's no telling where the bullet will bounce back because the plates don't move much or move well after the bullet has bounced off. 3/29/2010 11:31:02 AM |

You can try and get a purchase permit through your sheriffs office at age 20, but bring a parent with you. Federal law says that to purchase from an FFL you must be 21. Nothing in NC law specifies private party sales. You should be able to get a permit and purchase or be gifted the pistol from your dad at age 20. 3/29/2010 4:18:02 PM |
FenderFreek All American 2805 Posts user info edit post |
There are a few folks in Nc who have gotten purchase permits under 21. It is entirely the discretion of the sheriff, and you're most likely not going to convince him. It's worth a shot though(no pun intended). As stated, federal law prohibits you from buying from an FFL. You would be limited to private party sales. 3/29/2010 5:24:13 PM |

Is a stainless Para-Ordnance 1911 (SF-45A) any better than my stainless Springfield loaded model? I think as far as gucci features go, they're pretty comparable, other than the Para having an accessory rail.
My squadron is trying to put together a group buy on the Para. We're gonna get them custom engraved with the squadron logo (Playboy bunny).
I'd like to have a deployment pistol, but I don't see any reason to have two nearly identical 1911s.
I wonder how much I could sell my Springfield for (stainless loaded model, match bushing, trigger job, slide bead-blasted for matte finish). 3/30/2010 11:54:42 PM |
