http://www.androidcentral.com/samsung-announces-galaxy-tab-att-sprint-t-mobile-verizon
Quote :
"Samsung Mobile today announced the upcoming availability of the Galaxy Tab™ in the U.S with AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon Wireless. The first mobile tablet from Samsung shares many of the powerful characteristics of the Galaxy S smart phone lineup that launched this summer. The Galaxy Tab is designed with several enhancements to create a unique mobile experience that other products can’t deliver.

The Galaxy Tab features a brilliant 7-inch enhanced TFT display screen, 1GHz Hummingbird Application processor supporting 3D graphics and smooth Web browsing and front and rear-facing cameras for video chat while on-the-go. The Galaxy Tab is powered by Android 2.2™, including full support for Adobe® Flash® Player 10.1. Just like the Galaxy S smart phones, the Galaxy Tab includes Samsung’s Social Hub application and the new Media Hub content service, offering a robust collection of premium movies and TV episodes from some of the biggest entertainment companies.

No 2.2 for the Droid Eris

"Droid Eris not getting Froyo
Posted on Friday, Sep 17, 2010 by Kyle Gibb

Official word has come from Verizon that the Droid Eris will not be receiving an update to Android 2.2 ("Froyo"). Considering the device already hit end-of-life, this shouldn't really surprise anyone. Luckily for you, the determined Eris user, there are ways to get Froyo onto your phone. Who needs official software these days, anyways?"

Looks like the DX/D2 are going to be fully unlocked soon. The method has been figured out, someone just has to do it now.

30s to get a lock with good accuracy? Download GPSTest from the market and see how long it takes to get the satellites.

Yeah, is that slow or fast?

It's slow compared to anything else I've ever had...but better than minutes like some have talked about.

Mine takes 3-5min to get a lock on a cold start using google nav and the GPS Test app. Lock time is good after that initial lock but if I don't use it for 8hrs or more, it's like it clears everything out and has to reset.

From a cold start, I'll go into Google Maps, hit the My Location button and it will look for about 20s and say, "Location unavaible." As soon as I hit the button again, it's locked no prob.

what's the best format/program to use to convert some .ISO files (movies) to a file type playable on android (DX)?

ISO != movie

ISO == CD

if it's an SVCD ISO or something, get the MPEG2 file out from within the ISO container then use a standard converter - SUPER or whatever you want or just get RockPlayer instead of converting

^dude, an ISO is just an image file of an optical disc it could be a movie or music or data

^^use handbrake, it supports DVD images (.ISO) and can convert into portable versions

an ISO has a movie in it stored in a common movie format. i'm 100000000% certain he is not stupid enough to save a movie as an ISO in some god forsaken format.

no, but most commonly if you make an image of a DVD it's in the format of a DVD which are multiple files. handbrake will read the .ISO without you having to extract anything from it, it will read the appropriate .vob file or files and make the mp4/avi/wmv/mkv whatever file you want to convert it into.

i can't believe you just said ISO != movie and ISO == CD ...

in the case of a DVD image, that's exactly what it is. people with HTPC's use DVD .ISOs all the time and play them as .ISOs using VLC or the like... yes it's just an image of the DVD, but it doesn't matter, it's still a COPY of a DVD which is == movie

not at all...

the VOB files contain the movie in MPEG2 format. so all i was saying was that ISO is not a movie format, you need to dig into the container to figure out what format it's in. if he has something that's natively playable on android, why bother converting it.

that's all i was saying. i guess it wasn't clear...

yeh, I used DVDshrink to backup my dvds to ISO files. I was just saying that my ISO files were my movies. I know that ISO doesn't necessarily mean movie, but in my case that's essentially what it is

I use VLC to watch them on my laptop. I'll check out handbrake to convert to mp4s

I'd rather use a one click solution as I'll be converting a lot of files, instead of having to extract the actual movie file from each ISO and decide from there.

yeh. gotta be pure stock 2.1. or you can just reflash 2.1 if you're already rooted/etc. though it'd be dumb to root/custom ROM now if the 9/22 date is true.

^Not necessarily. A lot of people just wanted Froyo on their DX but then there are a lot of people that want a DX without motoblur and access to full ROMs and custom kernels as well. The hole that is likely going to allow for custom kernels and full custom ROMs could be easily patched with this update with no way to revert. It's also possible that Moto fixed current rooting methods (which would undoubtedly get broken again but you would have to wait).

Anyone need a micro-usb car charger? The Verizon one I bought with my Storm last year doesn't work with the Fascinate (falls out and doesn't fit tightly because of the way it's designed) so I ordered the newer charger they have. It works on the original Droid, not sure about the others.

I'm posting this in here as it's more relevant to Android, but it just reinforces the point that Apple is shooting itself in the foot limiting itself to one carrier... I wish I had a dollar for each time I've said that.

http://www.informationweek.com/blog/main/archives/2010/09/android_growth.html

Quote :
"... Apple launched the iPhone 4 and even though it was a massive sales success, being a single phone on a single carrier in the US is limiting its growth. Many of the fourth generation's sales are from existing iPhone owners that are upgrading. That generates revenue for Apple, but does nothing for the iPhone market share.

The fifth generation iPhone could come with a genie that pops out when you rub it and grant you three wishes and there are still people that won't switch to AT&T's network. Apple has dropped from 25.1 percent share to 23.8 percent share. Because the smartphone market is growing, it shows that whatever growth the iPhone is enjoying, it isn't keeping up with the market overall.

Google's Android platform has surpassed Windows Mobile from Microsoft. This isn't new information, but it is the first time this has happened over a rolling three month period, which shows that the trend is real. Microsoft's share for the three months ended April was 14 percent, just ahead of Google's 12 percent. Now the tables have turned. Microsoft is at 11.8 percent while Google has climbed to 17 percent."

apparently the D2 method works for the DX.

hmm. Anytime I have ever gone to settings > about and selected System Updates on my X I always get the "Check for Update was not available at this time. Try again later." It has been like this since I got my phone. I always just assumed this appeared by default or something since there wasn't an update, but I still get the same message today now knowing that an update should be available. I'll try it later today and see though.

Just told two friends of mine at work to try the force update and both of theirs started downloading immediately

I'm not rooted. I'm not running any crazy apps: no task killer, or tasker, or even any launcher. Just some games, beautiful widgets, mobile banking, and a few productivity apps (astrid, evernote etc.). The only really system related apps I even have are SystemPanel Lite and a battery widget and I already uninstalled them before powering off and pulling the battery earlier :/

If you want custom kernels/full customs ROMs do NOT install the OTA update. The bootloader has been changed. Also do NOT try to SBF back to 2.1 if the OTA fails or you get stuck in a bootloop, take the phone back to Verizon. SBF'ing back to 2.1 from the OTA 2.2 will BRICK your phone.

figured out what my problem was. For some reason the System Update is tied to your social networking data options. So, if you have your social networking data set to "sync on wifi only," the System Update also is only syncing over wifi. Kind of silly that even if you are manually navigating to that option it won't update and I also don't consider a System Update part of "social networking" but either way I'm glad I got it figured out.

NICE ... the froyo update didn't fix it completely, but it at least made this procedure fix it (this wouldn't work before i updated to 2.2)

forgive me if this has been posted before in here

to fix the 'phone wont ring w/ a ringtone, only vibrates" problem:

Quote :
"Before you start process below check the following:
1. Go Settings
2. Sound & Display
3. Scroll to the bottom
4. Locate the SMART SENSOR SETTINGS:
A). Double-Tap to Silence = No Checked
B). Smart Profile: Face Down = Checked
5. Now follow the steps listed below - these come directly from the Motorola Website and they worked for me on the 1st try!

•First try a workaround before completing a factory data reset:

1.Make sure that the "Smart Profile: Face Down" feature is enabled.
2.Hold the phone face up in your palm.
3.Call yourself from another phone.
4.As the phone is vibrating, DO NOT ANSWER.
5.Still holding the phone, flip the phone face down as it vibrates.
6.Then, flip the phone back over so that it's facing up. You should feel a quick vibrating jolt. That means the ringer is back on.
7.End the call from the phone you are calling from.
8.Leave phone face up and call yourself again. If it does not work on first attempt, try steps a few times before resetting the phone.

"

the browser interface for the PC is slow as hell.
the android app isn't that great looking; it doesn't load songs fast enough; and I can't find a way to shuffle all songs; add a playlist to the playlist shuffle...
