^^ Mexico has to lose. they have to make up I think 2 more in goal differential, and add another in goals scored (as opposed to Mexico).

The short of it is that in order for RSA to advance both they and Uruguay need to beat their opponents by a combined 5 points. Or combine for 4 points greater and RSA scores 3 goals.
Not looking incredibly likely. 3-0 and 2-0 would have done it. Now it would have to be like 4-1 and 2-0 or RSA needs to score like 3 goals in a hurry.

hats off to south africa. that result against uruguay buried them, but they put up a fight against mexico and france. you may not advance, but 4 points in group play against some pretty big boys is no small feat.
and i'm actually glad to see henry get his send off. people hate on him, i think too much for that handball. he's had a helluva career, and i'm glad to see him get some final world cup run

not their best today but still making it to knockout play. argentina is gonna be tough

So it's Uruguay and Mexico from Group A.
Group B doesn't look incredibly intriguing. I mean, it's not mathematically impossible for Nigeria to advance with a win over Korea since they're only -1 on goal differential against korea and greece.
Hell, it isn't even mathematically impossible that Argentina doesn't advance.
But realistically, it'll be Argentina and S. Korea. 6/22/2010 11:59:47 AM |

No, that's impossible.
If South Korea and Greece both win, they will have six points like Argentina.
However, Argentina beat both of them, so they advance.
And since South Korea beat Greece, S. Korea advances as well.

Wrong, Argentina would have to lose to Greece for Greece to win today.
So tiebreakers could and would come into play.

This definitely is crazy talk BUT,
if Greece beats Argentina 4-0 and Korea beats Nigeria 2-0, then Argentina will not advance.
So like I said, not mathematically impossible. It is practically impossible, however since we're talking about running 4 goals up on Argentina. with Greece.
Quote : | "So if US ties Algeria 0-0 & England ties Slovenia 2-2...who advances with Slovenia, US or England?" |
If US ties 0-0 we'll have 3 points, with 0 goal differential and 3 goals scored. England would have 3 points, with 0 goal differential and 3 goals scored. I think it would be the coin flip, I'm not so sure about the other tie-breaker rules.

1. greatest number of points obtained in the group matches between the teams concerned; 2. goal difference resulting from the group matches between the teams concerned; 3. greater number of goals scored in all group matches between the teams concerned; 4. drawing of lots by the FIFA Organising Committee. Yep. Division tiebreakers for both the NFL and NBA end in a coin toss after all the previous options didn't prove effective.
Bottom line: US needs to win. They control their own destiny against a team that they are fully capable of beating and a team who can't just pack it in because they need a win to have a chance to advance as well.. The bad call costing us the win vs Slovenia sucks, but it is still up to us to prove we deserve to be in the round of 16 by actually outright winning a game here.
