Ok would someone want to help me out this Sunday to learn and fly my plane.
I have yet to start the engine as well. I hear that you have to run it a bit before you fly.
Is this true? 8/24/2005 9:59:48 PM |
dustm All American 14296 Posts user info edit post |
Yes its good to break the engine in but a tankful or two will be fine to start out, then just run it richish (gray smoke) for a little while. What plane is it? and what engine do you have? I should be out there sunday but if not there will still be a fair size group so they can help you. Also beware the grass is somewhat hard on landing gear so it'll probably nose in at some point before it rolls to a stop. Bring extra props 8/25/2005 1:33:55 AM |

well, i found a good place to fly down here that i can take off/land a "real" airplane in (abandoned Navy runway), so i'm thinking about not bothering to fix that profile Gee Bee. i think i'm going to get a .40 size ARF kit, and pirate the radio and Supertigre .51 from the profile plane to put in it. i'm thinking--in order of preference--one of the "3D" style monoplanes, an FAI style pattern plane, or something on the order of an Extra, Sukhoi, CAP, Edge, etc.
and i fitted the cowling up to my Goldberg Ultimate bipe when i was on leave in NC. i think all it needs now is a receiver, battery pack, and fuel tank installed (servos and control hookups are done), and then have the CG set. only problem is that i have no means of getting it from Fuquay to Pensacola.

i'm thinking about a Goldberg Matrix .40
it looks to me like it would be the best blend of FAI style pattern airplane and "3D" style gyrate-out-of-control airplane. 9/5/2005 5:02:15 PM |

^^sounds like what you need, Duke. A little of each. I know you're not totally into the "go-to-hell" planes.
I've got to find time to pull mine out and go fly. There are just not enough hours in the week. 9/8/2005 12:37:51 AM |

I went out to Boone this weekend and had me a time! I went about 40 minutes north on the Parkway and ended up at The Lump. I have flown gliders off it before, but there was only a slight breeze this time so the natural updraft that the hill creates was not very strong, but it was strong enough to allow the plane to climb out with no problem.

I just got my airplane this weekend from my dad's office (where it's been sitting for the last year and a half). And I'm thinking about going flying sometime soon. 1/3/2007 5:45:22 PM |

i totally destroyed my Goldberg Ultimate bipe the other day...i'll post the details later (wasn't my fault) 1/4/2007 1:10:45 PM |
zxappeal All American 26824 Posts user info edit post |
Yeah, you need to post the details. I haven't flown in over a year.
Was that you that called me the other day? I noticed a relatively strange number on my caller id that looked like it might have been you.
Were you up this way? Out with granddad? BTW, I just got my AMA membership (after over 18 years since my last membership) so I can fly at club fields now. Thinking about trying to hit up JCAC (of which your grandfather at least used to be a member; how I met him in the first place) this weekend, if I can find all my various chargers and whatnot.
Shit, I hate that I missed you, man. 1/4/2007 6:42:26 PM |

yep, that was me that called.
i finally got to fly the Ultimate bipe on two different days up there...had all kinds of problems the first day (rudder failed, threw prop off at top of a loop, engine mixture settings screwed up, too large/low pitch of a prop, elevators not operating exactly in synch). got all of those problems sorted out (plane had only been flown a couple of times, and not by me...had mostly been sitting for a few years) and took it back out for the second day...it was flying awesome...kickass airplane--then I tried to do an avalanche and noticed it wasn't snapping hard--like either the rudder or ailerons had failed...then almost immediately, it completely lost radio control. by that point, it was coming down vertically out of the loop, and not responding to any inputs. i pulled the throttle back in case i regained contact, but it went straight in, through a tree, at WOT.
i salvaged the engine (.90 supertigre), pitts-type muffler, receiver, battery pack, rudder and throttle servos, both elevator servos, and one of the aileron servos. i also found one of the wheels. that's about it.
whatever I build next will definitely be an ARF kit...I'm thinking about putting all of that gear into a 67" Goldberg Edge 540 (or maybe a similar unlimited-class monoplane like a Yak/Extra/Sukhoi/CAP). I also want one of those FAI pattern/3D aero hybrids like a Matrix/Obsession...I'm thinking maybe Goldberg Matrix .40 with the supertigre .51 and extra radio that I have sitting around.
of course, I could do the reverse and build a .40 size Edge 540/Extra/CAP and a .60+ size Obsession...I don't know. I'm kinda leaning towards going bigger with the scale bird.
67" Edge 540 ARF
Matrix .40

we were over by Duncan. I think that's SWAMPS...can't remember.
I don't know what happened...I think maybe the rx battery came unplugged. might call granddad and have him put it on the voltmeter to make sure it wasn't that. 1/4/2007 9:21:00 PM |

What or where is SWAMPS?
I still have my NexStar Hobbico and went out to a field in Sanford over Christmas. Busted the prop and front gear but it was a blast!
I need to find a field around Raleigh. 1/4/2007 9:53:45 PM |
zxappeal All American 26824 Posts user info edit post |
Out in the sticks between Harnett and Wake Counties. http://www.swampsrc.org/
There's Flying Tigers out at Lake Jordan http://www.ncflyingtigers.org/
Raleigh-Durham R/C (RDRC) up between Rolesville and Louisburg (out in the boonies) http://www.rd-rc.org/
RAMS http://www.ramsrc.com/
Johnston County Aeromodelers (my old club) http://www.jcac.netfirms.com/
And I like to go out to Dorothea Dix and fly at the field next to the farmers' market. The soccer fields up by Western Blvd are cool, too, but are often occupied. And it's NOT a good idea to fly around people in places like that, especially if you're not experienced.
AMA-sanctioned clubs provide a good field to fly at, and having an AMA membership gives you insurance that will cover accidents (but only at a sanctioned flying field). True, AMA membership costs 58 dolla, and club dues can be expensive, but the peace of mind and having the experience of other club members at your disposal is well worth the price.
Flying Tigers is the cheapest of all of the clubs, BUT...you can only fly on evenings after 5pm during the week and on weekends. It's on state park land, and they require that you fly after the ranger station is closed. Because it's so cheap, the flight line is often packed. And the field isn't the nicest I've ever seen (though not that bad, really).
RDRC is a great club if you don't mind the drive. I haven't been to RAMS since they moved their field (their old one was really nice, with a paved runway and everything). And JCAC is a good bunch of guys with interests all over the board...a great club if you don't mind the drive.
SWAMPS is a great club, but a bit hard to get into, as its field is on private land, and they limit the number of members. My guess is that the atmosphere is a bit exclusive as well. More experienced long-time RC pilots in this one.

yeah - I know of those but those places are always crowded and you have to pay to fly and AMA and all that. I just want a field to fly on. Thats what I had been doing but Sanford is far away. Looking for somewhere closer to home. 1/4/2007 10:20:59 PM |

Seriously...get an AMA membership. 58 bux is cheap. And club membership does pay for itself. 1/4/2007 10:27:51 PM |

I don't fly enough to warrant a $125 membership.
I just need a open field. Much easier and you don't have to wait to fly. 1/4/2007 10:30:49 PM |

Until you hurt somebody. How often do you fly? How often do you want to fly?
Flying Tigers isn't nearly that expensive. It's only 30 bucks. 1/4/2007 10:36:17 PM |

Rarely - maybe 3 or 4 times a year. Basically when my Dad comes into town.
We have family in Sanford and we go to the old Sanford Airport that is closed. No one is ever around hence me not worrying about hurting someone or something. I am not silly enough to fly in a public park but I have been keeping my open for some open fields out in North Raleigh. 1/4/2007 10:40:35 PM |

JCAC is the best facility and the most active club i've been around (well, fayetteville has a better facility, but it's pretty much academic since they're both so good).
SWAMPS is pretty good, though. 1/4/2007 11:09:36 PM |

You might try selling it on RCGroups if you're already tried RCUniverse. Also I realize you have the radio included but to get it to move you may have to drop the price. I know its worth what you are asking but it may be hard to sell. 1/25/2007 11:09:45 AM |

I tried flying yesterday at the RC Wingers field outside of Mooresville. Hellacious wind. Creep upwind, haul ass downwind.
And I landed at about 5 miles an hour ground speed. Cool. 2/5/2007 12:30:12 PM |

well, i don't remember if i posted it anywhere else, but i totally destroyed my Ultimate Bipe last time I was up there in NC. it stopped responding to control inputs...i think the battery pack worked its way unplugged.
at any rate, i have a .51 and a .90 Supertigre sitting around unused. as some of you know, my granddad has an awesome hobby shop that he operates a couple of days per week. well, he's finally decided to sell all of his inventory and close the business...so he said he'd pull aside those aforementioned Matrix .40 and Edge 540 ARF kits for me. 3/22/2007 10:32:06 PM |

my granddad closed down his shop and sold all of his stock...but he pulled a few things aside for me.
Goldberg Matrix .40 ARF kit Supertigre .51
Goldberg Edge 540 ARF kit (67" span version, red/white/blue color scheme) Supertigre .90 w/ Pitts-style muffler O.S. 1.20 4-stroke
plain-jane 4-channel Futaba radio and servos (had it in a little profile Gee-Bee) another basic 4-channel Futaba that was in my Ultimate bipe...has some beefer, faster servos
thinking about selling the .90 two-stroke and the 1.20 four-stroke, and buying a bigger/more powerful 4-stroke for the Edge 540...maybe a Saito 1.50/1.80 or something (or hell, might just keep the other two engines if i can't get much for them...use them in something else someday) 6/28/2008 4:14:08 AM |
