every now and then, when I'm at Best Buy looking at computer stuff and one of the asshole employees assaults me, I like to pretend like I'm looking at buying a computer.
I then proceed to ask questions like "How many internets does it come with?"
The answers they will come up with just to sell you the computer are hilarious. 2/23/2007 10:37:20 AM |

My mother-in-law called last night (this is for real). She was sure to explain that this was a problem with a friend's computer. She would never allow this to happen with her own computer, obviously.
So her friend "deleted the program she uses at work with all her work files off her desktop". Pretty obvious she just deleted the shortcut somehow. So of course I tell her to go into the Start menu and Programs and look for it there. After she clicks Start she asks "now what do you do after you click Start?". She couldn't find it in the Programs list, so I just told her to take it to her IT department the next day and they would "restore it". I assured her that I was 99% sure she didn't "delete the program" and that all her "work files" were safe. Of course, my mother-in-law, the computer expert, chimed in with "yeah, that's what I told her. To fully delete a program, it asks you like, 2 or 3 times, if you want to delete it, and I don't think she did that". Of course you know at that point you just nod and agree - "yep, you're exactly right". 2/27/2007 11:31:00 AM |

I convinced the president of the small company I work for to get Cingular 8125 cell phones with email access for the traveling employees. So we get the phones and I set them all up to work with our server, and they are working great! The president gets back from Italy and I am setting up his email account; and I hit "send and receive" for the first time I find out that he has 15984 emails in his INBOX!! Well of course all those emails won't fit on the device, so I ask him to make a separate folder for all his old emails and he had no clue as to what I was talking about. The president of the company, which is suppose to be some marketing genius, has never filed away or deleted a single email. This guy is a complete idiot.
Just on another note, I noticed that he only had 739MB of free hard disk space......unbelievable.

I wouldn't say I'm that techincally inept but I have a story of myself being an idiot.
my two year old Dell laptop stopped charging a couple weeks ago. It wouldn't charge or run off of AC alone. I had been having some trouble with the connection before (ie had to turn the plug to make connection). So I start doing some research and I found alot of people with similar problems. Most of them had changed the port on the laptop itself and fixed the problem. This meant disassembling the entire laptop, desolding 10 points that holding the jack in place and soldering a new port. Pain in the ass because it had very small solder points on the motherboard. I take a night and get this done. I reassemble the laptop. Plug it in and nothing. It started fine off of the battery but would not charge.
I finally find a friend with the same power adapter and try it. Surpise it worked.
Damn EE degree that makes me think to indepth into issues. 3/21/2007 6:52:37 PM |
skokiaan All American 26447 Posts user info edit post |
^^don't see the problem there, either. I never file (take off the server) or delete email. Why should I have to? It's a low-level, mundane task that is a complete waste of my time. This is like making fun of someone for not defragging their hard drive. It's 2007 and the OS doesn't do that shit transparently?
Don't confuse poor software design with user stupidity. Google's little motto for gmail about never deleting email is spot on. Search obviates the need to do low-level tasks such as email maintenance. In other words, good software design trumps menial tasks that dorks think is normal.
As for the phone issue, you can't set it up to just grab the subjects and have it load the messages in real time like a web page?

I was out sick the day before, and when I came in there's all this buzz about how a tool I wrote was broken and how it caused all these problems and all these directors were pissed off or something. I'm supposed to immediately take every single entry into the database and make each a static file.
(That's 116 pages).
I of course say "Let's see about the error first. what was it" "It doesn't matter, you have to make all those pages static." "How about you go do that why I figure out what the problem is". Yeah... i was a bit of a smartass but hey.. I don't even know what the error is yet.
I finally get to see the error and its happening when someone tries to submit a rather large word.doc. Now mind you the tool is designed to convert cut/pasted text from a word doc and remove all word formatting, font styles etc. Pretty cool stuff. The error is "invalid character".
The debugging report (in Cold Fusion) shows me the query and the data. The genius who was moments ago telling me to create tons of static files had tried to style the SQL query. I am not shitting you.
<p> <cfquery name="getactive" datasource="#datasource#"> <p>select --stuff---</p> <p>from -table-</p> <p>where id=-#session....id#</p> </cfquery> <p>

I dunno if this qualifies. But the last CSC116 prog was due on a friday. I was in Daniels debugging mine and finishing up and some scrub next to me kept asking me to help him. I initially thought he had some syntax problem. He was asking me why his method call wouldn't work. I agreed to look @ it, and he was copy and pasting the entire method from another java class rather than to call the method. And his try[]catch for exception handling had nothing inside the brackets. I about fell out of my chair laughing. 4/4/2007 9:38:05 AM |

SSI Includes fun.
So an unnamed individual at work goes "I read an article that says SSI Includes are a security risk." Of course since I use a lot of those it perked my interest and asked where he read it.
"In a journal you don't get" so I kind of smirk and ask what kind of security risk it poses
"People will be able to access included pages and I go
"Well yeah that's kinda the point of an include. It 'includes' that code on a page".

There might be some psychological phenomenon here worth exploring, because none of the old ladies I work with can grasp the concept of 'click and drag,' either. I get called out of my office at least once a week because the taskbar wound up on the right hand side of their screen, and explaining to them how to drag it back to the bottom completely bewilders them.4/5/2007 11:34:50 AM |

^ What he said.
^^ I see how you could construe what I said to be like that but this is something I deal with on a daily basis. They don't try to understand a problem, they hear one person say it's "bad" and assume since they don't know anything about it, it is.
My example proved that he didn't understand the nature of a virtual include. Instead of stopping and asking or understanding what one was, he assumed it was bad.
I had a chance to read the article that he "read" and it was discussing server issues with includes that contain executables, and includes within includes within includes how it slows load times of pages. So I think he just scanned the article and saw "Includes BAD! Load times go up with includes!". That what I was pointing fun at. 4/5/2007 2:21:15 PM |

Every IT shop has atleast 1 technically inept worker who claims to be IT. Just because some one can navigate windows explorer and provide answers to the technically inept does not exempt them from being technically inept. If you're IT and don't have a technically inept person working with you then congratulations you're the Dee Dee Dee.
Luckily my supervisor is the technically inept person in our shop. We have an exchange server and he tried to grant permissions to allow Person A to access Person B's mailbox. Normally, this is a 2min process using Exchange Server Admin, right-clicking on Person B's mailbox and granting access. My supervisor calls me over because it's not working. He shows me what he's doing and it turns out he's granting permissions using the Outlook shortcut on his desktop(he's not person A or B). This isn't the old school outlook desktop icon that directly accessed your mailbox, this is the plain old windows shortcut that links to outlook.exe
When I explain to him the difference between a shortcut and a file and how outlook works with exchange server, he just has this dumbfounded look on his face like this is news to him. 4/6/2007 1:42:05 PM |

Then there's my dad, the accountant that won't learn Excel. We were playing tennis on my Wii Sports. To serve the ball, he mimed throwing a ball up with his left hand and swinging with the controller in his right hand. There was no sensor in his left hand.4/8/2007 9:04:25 PM |
