#42 WF-Rolesville (8-4) by 3 at Leesville Road (9-2) -- WF-R beat Leesville two weeks ago (4AA East)

Yep...Hoggard's first-round game was a no-win situation, because they were so heavily favored. Three other teams who easily beat decent opponents moved past them. Hoggard's road is pretty easy until the eastern final, but a win over Rose would certainly be a big deal.

St. Paul's is 7-5, against an average schedule for a 2A team. They've only played one team better than Southern Vance (a 33-point loss to East Bladen). Other decent opponents were Purnell Swett (a 6-point loss) and Gray's Creek (a 1-point upset win). I think this will be a game, but I expect Southern Vance to move on.

Cary didn't just beat New Bern; they demolished them, 49-12. One New Bern fan told me it was the worst performance he'd ever seen in 20+ years of following the Bears. I was as surprised as anyone, even though Cary nearly upset Fuquay-Varina (and likely would have, except for poor officiating).

However, I agree that the Imps are likely to get stomped in Fayetteville this week. The only 4A/4AA game I see with a wider margin is Hoggard-New Hanover. Other blowout possibilities are South Central at Western Alamance, West Henderson at Shelby, North Rowan at Cummings, Roanoke at Manteo, and West Montgomery (or nearly any other 1A team) at Thomasville.

East Henderson is 7-5, against a reasonably tough schedule for a 2A team. They've been predictable, beating all the teams they should have, but going 1-5 against better teams (with a 10-point victory over Owen early in the year). They hung tough against West Henderson and Hunter Huss, so East Lincoln needs to jump on them early before they believe they have a chance to win.

i was there last friday covering it for the N@O. Cary owned them upfront on both sides of the line and gave their RB room to run. Cary also just looked a shit ton quicker than new bern at most positions from what i could see. I know New Bern got killed the previous week by Greenville Rose maybe they were hungover from that game, i dunno.

Southern Durham goes to Fayetteville tonight, since Terry Sanford is the higher seed. I was calling games "local" only if they're being played here.

Besides the AP poll and mine, there are two other statewide rankings. Here's what they say about Indy.

Arnold Solomon of NCpreps.com has them #2 overall, and #2 in 4A.
http://ncpreps.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=608031

Kenneth Massey (one of the BCS folks) has them at #6 overall, #4 in 4A.

^^ East Wake didn't really drop; their rating rose by a half-point last week, but some other teams that beat stronger opponents rose more, and jumped over EW. If the Warriors win tonight, I can guarantee they'll be ranked next week.

It would be hard for any team in the state, Independence included, to go to Greenville and win. I sure hope that East Wake does it, though, because otherwise my team (Fuquay-Varina) is headed down there next week, if we win tonight; I'd much rather have a home game against East Wake, if we're still alive.

Fuquay-Varina 21, Durham Hillside 18

A great team beats great individual players; Hillside threw for over 250 yards, but couldn't get the ball in the end zone. Fuquay-Varina travels to Greenville Rose next week, with nothing to lose.

East Lincoln 28
East Henderson 7

This may have been Payton Brady's worst game (4 INTs), but the rest of the team stepped up. Adrian Forney ran for 3 TDs, and the Defense posted a shutout (only TD for EH was a kick return). East Henderson was supposed to have a tremendous offense, yet couldn't get anything done. Up next, Shelby. This could be an upset.

Other scores:

Shelby 21
West Henderson 7

Cherryville 18
Jordan Matthews 14
Another upset win by Cherryville (though they are #4)

North Gaston 26
Hunter Huss 21

Wow...that is a big upset by Cherryville (now 5-8) ...they had a high seed solely because they were the only 1A team in their conference...I expected Jordan-Matthews (falling to 11-2) to win easily, despite the long bus ride.

^^Well, I agree on that, though I should have known better, since Cherryville did upset my Mustangs early in the year. However, nobody gave them a shot. And how about that Southern Piedmont 1A/2A. Nobody gave the conference respect all season. Now, they still have 3 teams left in the playoffs (East Lincoln, Cherryville, South Iredell).
