TOB is going to retain some of our current coaches ie Portee, Cignetti, maybe Stroud and probably the recruiting coordinator Jamison which will help with recruiting. I am not worried about the recruiting aspects of it because kids mostly want to play for a winning program and just like in business, relationships can be built between TOB and NC high school coaches. I have no worries about TOB ability to win and recruit here. Also, you can recruit all your 4 and 5 star kids you want but if you can do shit with them (3-9) record what does it matter anyway?

TOB recruited guys like Kiawanuka and Will Blackmon, and always puts solid guys on the O-line - - he can't be that terrible right?

4-3 I can win the game with a field goal. Fuck it, I'm going to hand it off to my injured linebacker and fail and lose to NC State.

if he does here what he did at BC he'll be a hero (this is not basketball).

and given our better facilities and location, there's no reason to assume that he won't.

Seems like ACC fans at http://www.SouthernPigskin.com are talking like TOB is a great hire and will launch NCSU football...

Exciting! Bring BC's record to NC State, and the lowest bowl we would have gotten this year would be the Champ Sports.

If you read the BC boards, they hated O'Brien for some reason. I guess winning 8 games a year was underacheiving at BC in thier minds. crazy stuff. I think he will turn around State. Plus his assistants are very loyal to him not a lot of coaching turnover like the Chest had.

unless they get a top end coach ... they will look back to these yrs with fond memories.

I think this guy can win at NCST, prolly next year.

I am surprised by the move though, but good for the wolf pack.

I think TOB is gonna be awsome and i know all this crap about not winning the big game but the guy is consistent and he WINS. That is why hes coming to be our coach because we need to see consistency from a coach which we have never had in football. i would love to see nc state consistently winning 7-9 games a year and maybe 10-11 if TOB can break through and win that big game.

What coach has had a more consistent run at NC State than TOB has had at Boston College? Did that coach have back to back to back 9 win seasons ever? Did that coach go to 7 straight bowl games and win 6 of them?

[Edited on December 7, 2006 at 3:02 PM. Reason : and yes I'm aware lou holtz did but 4 years is too small of a sample to me..]

^ Sheridan did

Has any State coach ever had 9 win seasons 3 years in a row?

Answer: No

Edit: Dammit, I thought O'Brien did.... he had 8,9,9 . Ignore this post

Temple was in the Big East. It's no different than playing Duke before the expansion..

^^ he did.. BC is 9-3 this year too... and I tend to agree about Sheridan. I think his best years would have been ahead of him too if not for health issues. Sheridan did have a few 5 loss seasons in the middle but I'd say him and O'Brien are pretty consistent. I'd take Sheridan consistency in a heartbeat for the time being..

Amato was just as bad about scheduling cupcakes.

plus, our OOC scheduling is mostly set for the next several years. I believe we have ND, Tennessee, and Louisville coming up in the next few years.

isn't confirmation bias nice? what's the point of asking a question if you're going to arbitrarily eliminate answers to benefit your point?

the guy said that we've never had a consistent winner. i only pointed out to him that he is wrong.

btw, y'all are ASSUMING o'brien will win 9 games a year at state. nothing is a given. i'm not saying that he won't (i think he'll average 7 wins here), but you can't talk shit to anti-o'brien people when you're argumented is based upon a whole lot of assumptions about the future.

and no one has argued chuck has had better schedules, so why do y'all keep pointing that out??? it only furthers some peoples' argument that o'brien will do what is necessary to be mediocre, but never break it big.

Yes we are. It's a hell of a lot easier to assume he will continue to perform at that level, especially with the obvious boon of being at a school with better facilities, better fans, and a more fertile recruiting ground.

^ exactly. You make predictions based on past indicators, not on gut feelings..

you're ignoring the fact that he'll have a SHITLOAD more recruiting competition down here, and he's starting from scratch.

Quote :
"Tom O'Brien will not need to worry about adjusting to the competition of a new conference as he moves from Boston College to N.C. State. O'Brien has switched from one ACC school to another, which may seem like a bad move considering the success Boston College has had and the struggles N.C. State has recently suffered.

In the end though, this looks a good move for O'Brien and a great move for the Wolfpack. They get a proven winner, and O'Brien can recruit a more fertile area. His recruiting base goes from the Northeast to the South, and that is a big difference. The amount of immediate talent now available to him far exceeds what he had at Boston College.

Many thought that by entering the ACC, the Eagles would improve their ability to recruit in the South. The truth is that regardless of what conference they are in, it can be a tough sell to get recruits to leave a certain style of life in the South for the cold and hustle and bustle of a place like Boston.

At N.C. State, that is no longer a concern for him. He will be recruiting a deeper pool of talent right out of his own backyard. In addition, college football is looked upon differently at a place like N.C. State than it is at a Boston College. Boston is a professional sports town, and despite the Eagles success, they often take a back seat to the Red Sox, Patriots, Celtics and Bruins. At N.C. State, O'Brien will be able to sell a bit more of a football atmosphere to recruits, and that should help him.

Also, he is not facing the same stringent admission standards. Boston College can be a tough place to get student-athletes admitted, and that limited who he recruited. At N.C. State, he will not be facing the same level of admission standards and will be able to broaden the scope of players he can recruit.

The opportunity to win is there for O'Brien, and his style may be what the Wolfpack needs to get on track. N.C. State has been very inconsistent, looking good one week and then like a totally different team the next. O'Brien's no-nonsense, disciplinary style could help to quickly right the ship.

He did a nice job of recruiting at Boston College and proved himself to be a very good teacher who got the most out of players. If he can do that with his new program, he should be able to quickly get N.C. State back into the thick of things in the ACC.

Now he'll have to see if the verbal commitments stick from some top prospects stick, guys like wide receiver Jay Smith (Norfolk, Va./Lake Taylor), defensive end Linwan Euwell (Pinetops, N.C./Southwest Edgecombe) and tight end George Bryan (Wilmington, N.C./New Hanover). He needs to evaluate and decide who will fit his program best and keep those players on board. It is not too late to still make up ground for this 2007 class and generate interest in N.C. State from uncommitted prospects.

If he can reestablish interest in the school from top prospects like Tydreke Powell (Ahoskie, N.C./Hertford County) and Adewale Ojomo (Hialeah, Fla.), he has a chance to pull in a solid class in a short amount of time.

O'Brien will face tough competition from nearby schools. North Carolina has out-recruited the Wolfpack recently, and that is not going to be any easier to change with Butch Davis at the helm now. Also, Steve Spurrier has really elevated South Carolina as a recruiting presence, and Clemson is never easy to battle with over prospects.

O'Brien has a good chance for success at his new school if he can identify and coach up talent like he did at Boston College.

Boston College is left in a tough spot here as not only did they lose their coach, but they lost him to a rival conference school and now will face him regularly. O'Brien is not leaving the cupboard bare, but the Eagles will need to quickly replace him with someone who can overcome the hurdles of recruiting to a school like Boston College."
