I love the fact there is one dude defending the PS3 in one PS3 thread, whereas there are about two dozen Wii users in two Wii threads and another two dozen 360 users in two 360 threads.
I can't say I hate the PS3; hell, I'll buy one after a price drop , people start dumping their consoles on eBay for less than market or a good number of decent exclusives hit the shelves. But until then, I'll read about the games and play the NBA demo at the kiosks.
It's a decent system, but if price is an issue for an HD system, I'd roll 360 100 percent -- especially right now. There are just not enough exclusive titles that draw my attention. I admit "Resistance" looks sweet, but I can wait to grab that when the next "Gran Turismo" (not the cop-out "Gran Turismo HD") hits the market. Then I'll look seriously if the price is worth it.

^^^ Analysts are predicting a price drop ($100) by the end of '07; probably with the launch of a flagship game. If you look at the PS3 release schedule, GT5 could hit shelves in Q4. Also, there may be an even bigger price drop by '09. Sony will no longer be making the cell processors first-hand, and they are getting smaller. So by '09, look for a smaller version of the PS3 with an even smaller pricetag as they mass produce the cells.

Can't wait for Motorstorm. Its looking like its going to be really fun to play, especially online. I'm picking up Oblivion as well since I never played it on any other console and heard it really was a super fun game. I'm not really into rpgs, but I thnk it will be fun to just have a game that I can play on and off and have it last me like a year.
I'll probably check out Calling All Cars too as that looks like a pretty fun multiplayer game. Reminds me a little of how GTA2 was, and that game was so fun to play multiplayer. 2/26/2007 9:56:07 AM |

^ Have you played the Motorstorm demo? I used to just think it was just pretty good until I saw that you could steer with the sixaxis. It made the game so much more fun and is definitely a must pick up now. Plus all of the reviews so far on IGN have said it is one of the most fun racing games ever.
In other news you can preorder a PS3 with Linux on it: http://www.linuxdevices.com/news/NS7863481537.html 2/26/2007 10:14:37 AM |

Yeah I've played the demo and its really fun. If the game plays exactly like that with good online play (no lag) then the game is going to be just fine for me.
From what I've seen though it looks like it is going to be graphically better in many ways, so I'm pumped. 2/26/2007 2:51:06 PM |

There are some good games on the way for sure (NBA street, MotorStorm, Lair, Calling All Cars), which is a relief.
What I'm most excited about, though, is the promised firmware update (due on or around the Euro Launch: 3/23).
It is going to add all the things that should've been included at launch: multitasking, download queues, download resumes, integrated audio + video chat, PSP remote access via Wifi (the megaton feature) and hopefully they'll iron out a few other things while they're at it (like 720p Blu-Ray playback, please).
I've also read some interviews where they give a glimpse of future plans, and they talked about a firmware update slated for fall that will add tivo-like functionality to the PS3. That combined with the PSP wifi connectivity = 2/27/2007 11:36:37 AM |
goalielax All American 11252 Posts user info edit post |
sigh, it's not just $600 for a video game console - it also gets the Blu-Ray player. So an xbox guys says you can get HD-DVD for the xbox? Fine, pay $600 bucks for a premium system and a HD-DVD and then tack on another $100 for wifi. Oh, and the xbox won't actually have games on HD-DVD, just movies. They still can only make games on DVD-sized disks.
Anyway, flOw is amazing to play...it's trance-like and with the sixaxis control is pretty damn sweet. The drought for PS3 games ends this month and it looks like a lot of good stuff is on the horizon. 2/27/2007 11:42:09 AM |

^ You should definitely pick it up. It is only $8. It is not an epic game that will keep you playing for weeks on end but it is worth buying if only because it is such a unique game play experience. I really enjoyed playing through the single player and also playing the multiplayer with friends. If you have noticed the difference in enjoyment in playing Motorstorm with the analog stick verses sixaxis, it takes the fun of sixaxis to another level.
Also, I am starting to get more and more anxious for Lair. If they pull off flight with the sixaxis right I think the game will be amazing. The screenshots look great http://www.ultimagame.com/play_station_3/lair/galeriafotos_j1338_0.html

All the PS3 games are on bluray. Well, all of them that actually come on a disc at least. Games you download obviously aren't on any kind of disc.
Lair is starting to intrigue me some, but I'm just excited as hell right now about Motorstorm so I haven't really thought about it. I think I'll pick up Tekken DR on Thursday as well just to have a good cheap fighter on the system. its supposed to be identical in gameplay to the arcade, so that should be hot, plus 1080p support.
I'm going to have more than enough games to deal with for a good while starting this week.

^^ Quote : | "Phil Harrison, corporate executive and representative director of Sony Computer Entertainment spoke with Gamesindustry.biz recently about how developers are already using a full 25GB Blu-ray disc for their games.
"Already, at our launch titles, we're getting up close to the 25GB limit that we have on our Blu-ray discs this year...Next year we'll raise that to 50GB, and I'd expect that we’ll be getting close to that in the fairly near future as well," he explained.
When asked about the non-interactive HD movies some developers are implementing and how that may be the reason for the high storage usage, Harrison added, "It's not just about graphics...It's about 7.1 audio, it's about speech, it’s about having up to 1080p movies built into the game; it's high res textures, it's animation, it's everything that goes into making a very rich and varied next-gen experience." |
I know that Resistance used 22 GBs and the last number I saw for Motorstorm was 19 GBs ... This is compressed data too because the cell can decompress faster than it processes data.

I was reading an article in one of these threads that was pretty ridiculous. It claimed that games didn't need to be on bluray/hd-dvd disks because there were already games out on the regular DVD format that were plenty long (oblivion for example). I have read that Sony had stated plans to remove this hardware BC as far back as July 2006. As of right now, it is too early to say what type of effect it is going to have on supporting PS2 games on the European machines and how this will alter the European launch.
Sony's eventual plan is to completely switch over to software BC for all manufactured PS3s so I would imagine that future firmware will provide BC for almost all PS2 titles if there are some that are not supported come European launch.

so far Sony has said no price cuts for at least 2 years. Already an Xbox 360 price cut is heavily rumored as well as the wii dropping 50 bucks to 199. This is going to hurt Sony.

What Sony has announced for sure is the pricing of their first party games: they'll retail for EUR 59.99/GBP 39.99. Games are expensive wherever you go, but this move puts PS3 titles at a lower price than 360 games. Quote : | "Once those complexities are unwound, how dramatically will the PS3 development environment change?
This is what we’re looking forward to that in eight years down the road, as Sony said they want this machine to be around for the remainder of the decade… Right now, the games you’re seeing come out are using engines that are more in the traditional way of creating games, which is that your engine architecture has access to all the other parts of the engine itself. With the PlayStation 3, we’re going to have to figure out how to divide up these things up so that they’re much more separate.
[We’ll have to] explore things such as "procedural synthesis," which really has exciting potential on the PS3. Rather than creating all these environments and all these behaviors by hand, now we’ve got a lot of this power, [so] we can come up with ways that the processor can create environments and create artificial intelligence rules that kind of emerge with gameplay and adjust to the gamers' input, so we can have a lot more variety. That could interest somebody with the concerns of the rising cost of development." |

Newsweek has done a really interesting set of interviews with Phil Harrison about the current state of the PS3 and its future. I always enjoy hearing his views and I am glad he is taking more of a public front now since he seems to be the best public face for the PS3.
Loot: The Phil Harrison Interview, Part I http://ncroal.talk.newsweek.com/default.asp?item=506839 Part II http://ncroal.talk.newsweek.com/default.asp?item=508501 Part III http://ncroal.talk.newsweek.com/default.asp?item=509750
Some highlights:
Quote : | "We're going to release additional content for Resistance. I don't think we've gone into detail on the schedule, but we have some really, really cool things that will be extending the story, extending the locations, some brand new content, starting in April. So if that works well and is well-received by the audience, then that will keep the engagement with game going between now and should there be a sequel at some point in the future." |
Quote : | "Past MotorStorm, what would you point to that's going to blow the roof off?
From our own studios, Warhawk, Lair, Heavenly Sword, the Naughty Dog game--the game with no name, at least not officially. I think those individually and collectively are going to resonate with gamers around the world, of a lot of obvious reasons. From third parties, I'm less qualified to comment, because I just don't have the exposure, but definitely Metal Gear Solid 4, definitely Final Fantasy XIII, I'm hearing about some interesting things from Sega--
The reviews for Virtua Fighter 5 have been great.
Right. So I think everybody just needs to relax. It's okay. It's okay." |
Quote : | "We are under no illusions as to the complexity of the challenge. I think what you've touched upon is actually the thing that we wrestle with internally. Our engineers in Japan are unrivaled in their ability. I have unbelievable respect for what they have pulled off from a hardware point of view, a software point view, an operating system point of view, how robust the machine is. I'm sure a lot of people had already written the story about PS3s being returned for some hardware problem. There is no hardware problem. So I'm sure a lot of people were like, "Damn!"
[Laughs.] I'm sure there were some people in Redmond saying that.
Right. The fact that the Playstation 3 experience, which is exponentially more complicated than a PS2 or a PS1, works, does what it says, every time, efficiently, effectively--it's a fantastic achievement." |
