The funny thing about ATT 3G is that its not really technically deployed across the entire country. Edge, as noen loves to point out, is indeed a very very slow method of internet connectivity. In fact, you could probably go brew coffee in the time it takes to download http://www.brentroad.com and make a biscuit to go along with that if the stupid ad banner in the top right times out.
The lack of flash is also pretty funny.
That being said, every other aspect of this device has been so much better then the plethora of phones I've used and tested that I'm really more pissed then surprised. The browser is perfectly usable in a wifi environment (coverage which I'll have nearly everywhere I go) and is light years better then any other phone browser I've used save for an internal SE p990 build that an engineer had two years ago. 7/1/2007 4:17:21 PM |

I've been playing with it for about an hour now and this thing is amazing, one of the few thing I've ever purchased thats actually living up to the hype. Loading a youtube video using the edge network takes about 10 seconds of load time before it starts, using wifi its instantaneous and the video quality is amazing. 7/1/2007 4:36:50 PM |

Mine dad got one and the speaker in the earpiece wasn't working. He got it exchanged for a new one, with no problems.
Both times though it took less than 5 minutes each time to activate the phone through iTunes, but we already had a family plan and were just moving a number. 7/1/2007 7:05:56 PM |

Couple of quick thoughts:
They keyboard actually is fine. I've graduated to being able to type without looking with one hand. The mental block is that people assume the key touch area is smaller then it actually is and maybe they could clean the graphics up so that doesn't happen.
Contact management is superior to my previous SE phone as outlook sync up was seamless and scrolling through them is retarded easy. Of course, I probably wouldn't say that if I had more then twenty contacts so obviously YMMV.
I also think that the default menu while calling should be the keypad rather then the phone menu. This isn't an issue normally, but while driving (!!) I had to look down and click 'keypad' when a phone prompt response was needed.
Another useful feature would be integrated 411. Having YouTube is cute and all but integrated directory assistance is a feature thats LONG overdue in cellphones. (and I'm talking about more then just 'pushhereofronstarlol') 7/1/2007 9:08:39 PM |

Apple's not the one creating the hype though, it's the media. There weren't even any commercials for the iPhone until this month. No one knew anything about it otherwise, than what was stated at the last MW expo.
But, consumers have been clamoring for a phone for a while that had a good UI, and they perceived the iPhone as the one phone that would finally make this happen, because of how the iPod's UI is perceived to be easy to use compared to anything else. This desperation for a phone like this is what caused the hype.
The iPhone's UI has a lot of eye candy, but this is the kind of thing that aides ease of use. The animations and transitions aide the UI, not compromise or detract from it. This sounds kind of lame... but on sci-fi movies, for many years, we consumers see these crazy interfaces on the fake future computers. We can technically do a lot of that stuff, but most tech companies are so ingrained in the old way of doing things, no one is really trying, except for Apple. And it's pretty clear consumers craze for this kind of stuff. It also drives technological development... creating faster, lower power chips to handle all the animations. I read somewhere that the iPod singlehandedly is responsible for helping to drive the price of flash chips down. The iPhone will force competitors to focus on UI more to compete. Because of the iPod there are a lot of other really nice mp3 players on the market.
Having used the iPhone for about an hour, there are a lot of shortcomings I could mention. One of them is the phone... I use my phone now for no more than 30-40 minutes a month, and the way I make phone calls, the iPhone is actually a tad more complicated than what I have to do now, and I was a little bit confused by all the extra stuff it has related to phone calls. I can imagine though that someone that routinely gets multiple calls at once would love the UI for this.
The web browsing, google maps, you tube, and iPod interface are the best i've seen for a mobile device (I don't see how people are saying the Coverflow is smoother than itunes though, iTunes' coverflow is WAY smoother for me on my 1.5Ghz laptop). I also think it's a great idea to require a mandatory unlimited data plan, it's already caused ATT to beef up their internet access, and hopefully it'll cause them and others to take it to the next level in the US.7/2/2007 12:38:21 AM |

There was one conference in January when he announced it and one conference this month (when the wide advertising started) that was a complete rehash of the first.
In those 4+ months in between, Apple didn't do shit. Look no further than this very thread: a bunch of posts in January, a bunch of posts in June, only a few in between. Maybe your memory is faulty are you are projecting the coverage from June back further.
It's been mostly tech writers filling the space between those two conferences. Apple is at fault because writers are generally obsessed with (praising and trashing) it? Riiiight. 7/2/2007 1:41:32 AM |

yea, at best the old models will come down on price until they sell out once a new product is released..but even that doesn't always happen. apple forces all retailers that sell its products to maintain the prices apple sets and nothing less. i.e. that's why ipods cost the same at walmart as the apple store, and why the old ones didn't even get marked down when the video ipods came out.

Quote : | "Apple sold around half a million iPhones the first weekend the device went on sale, one analyst firm has estimated.
Piper Jaffray's Gene Munster released a report Sunday night estimating that Apple sold about 500,000 units from 6 p.m. Friday through the close of business Sunday. Going into the weekend Munster thought Apple would sell 200,000 on Friday and Saturday.
Despite low supply at AT&T stores and activation issues, it appears that the iPhone era at Apple got off to a good start. Piper Jaffray said Apple had iPhones available in each one of its stores on Saturday, and in 84 percent of its stores Sunday.
Ninety-five percent of iPhone buyers in San Francisco, New York and Minneapolis (home to Piper Jaffray's offices) purchased the 8GB model, according to a survey conducted by the firm. About half were new customers for AT&T, at least among the 253 people surveyed for the report. " |

I need my head checked then.
I primarily get my tech news from forums (like this one) and Ars Technica. Neither place has any ties to Apple, yet both places contained a healthy dosing of iPhone information. It wasn't Apple telling people to make posts about it, but was those people choosing to do it, based on the compelling demo Apple gave on its intro. The hype created itself from there.
The people Apple gave iPhones too ahead of time were under a pretty strict NDA not to talk about it at all, and none of them did (no one knew they even had them) until the dropping of the NDA.7/2/2007 2:02:35 PM |

Forget the phone, a touchscreen MP3 player is almost worth the price of entry. This is a whole lot easier to use then my Zune.
I will gripe about the stupid fucking retarded headphone jack though. Grats to the asshat that intentionally made the grove deep so as to preclude almost every other headjack from being able to fit in it without an adapter.
