^well, there is a slight difference between wishing that Cheney was killed (lets take the recent Iraq incident as an example) and making a joke that everyone was making about Edwards anyway. I mean I don't think anybodies joking that Mrs. Edwards ought to die.

Quote :
"Edwards presses rivals for details at health care forum.

LAS VEGAS, Nevada (AP) -- John Edwards said Saturday he will definitely stay in the presidential race, trying to reassure voters and donors that he can handle the dual pressure of the campaign and his wife's cancer diagnosis.

At a Democratic presidential forum focused on health care, Edwards pressed his rivals to provide a detailed plan to cover the nation's uninsured -- estimated at about 47 million -- and describe how they will pay for it.

His chief competitors, Sens. Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, did not rule out the possibility that they would follow his lead with a plan requiring a tax increase, but they provided no specifics.

"I have not foreclosed the possibility that we might need additional revenue in order to achieve my goal, but we shouldn't underestimate the amount of money that can be saved in the existing system," Obama said when asked whether he would raise taxes to reach his goal of universal coverage by the end of his first term.

"I can tell you I will do whatever it takes," the Illinois senator added.

Clinton did not say whether or not she is considering a tax increase, but said she cannot see putting more money into what she described as the current broken system. She said she is committed to succeeding where she failed with the health care plan she crafted in her husband's first term in the White House.

"We're going to change the way we finance the system by taking away money from people who are doing well now," said Clinton, who represents New York in the Senate. Asked who she was referring to, she mentioned insurance companies.

The forum was sponsored by the Service Employees International Union and the Center for American Progress Action Fund, a Washington-based policy group.

It came two days after Edwards announced that the breast cancer that his wife thought she had beaten had returned, this time in her bone. He pointed out his wife, Elizabeth, sitting in the front row and said they both understand that dealing with their personal struggle will require "a focus and a maturity."

"I'm definitely in the race for the duration," he said. "This is not the first challenge that Elizabeth and I have been through."

Edwards pointed out that they lost their teenage son, Wade, 11 years ago in a car accident -- something that he didn't talk about much when he ran for president four years ago.

"I know because of the nature of the woman I'm married to that she will be there every single step of the way," he said. "We take our responsibility to serving this country very seriously."

Edwards said he and his wife are getting too much credit for forging ahead when millions of women are enduring the same struggle and the additional worry of getting the necessary care.

"One of the reasons that I want to be president of the United States is to make sure that every woman and every person in America gets the same things that we have," Edwards said. His plan would require employers to provide insurance and individuals to have it at a cost of $90 billion to $120 billion.

Edwards said any politicians who say they can provide universal health care and other promises while ending the federal deficit are not being honest.

"They've probably got a bridge in Brooklyn they want to sell you, too," Edwards said to laughter and applause. "I just don't think it can be done."
"

I think his views on health care are going to keep pushing him towards the top. I feel fairly confident at this point he will be somewhere on the democratic ticket. This article points out that they’ve dealt family challenges before like the loss of a son and I think it’s great that Mrs. Edwards is choosing to keep living her life to the fullest and that this can be a “teaching moment” for the nation on breast cancer/health issues. Lincoln lost a son in office and still did good things, and Cheney was able to stay a heart beat away from the presidency for this long time even with his heart issues, so I don’t think this should be detrimental to their campaign.

I'm already tired of hearing this. It's nice that they're continuing on, but similar (and worse) things happen to thousands of people across the country everyday. They are not unique in their decision to carry on. They are not stronger than others who have decided to carry on. But I can already tell that every other article about his campaign is going to have some reference to how strong Edwards and his family are, to carry on in spite of such adversity...just look at the tragedy in his life; his son, his wife...how can be so strong to campaign for President?

So universal health care and zero federal deficit are mutually exclusive?

while i agree up to a point, i don't think the idea is that they're somehow special because of her condition. they're in a position where they can reach a lot of people and use it as a way of putting this issue on people's minds.

The media coverage. The fact that the wife of prominent public figuring running for President has cancer is newsworthy, and it's unsurprising that he would announce it.

If he sticks with this, that's fine. But if keeps harping on the cancer and adds on

Kay Yow does it

I'd much rather hear about her anyway

plus she's done lots more for helping with cancer research

for some reason I'm not surprised that Edwards sees this as an opportunity to pick up some of the sympathy vote

The new revised figure says 44 million people dont have any healthcare in America. 1/5 in Nevada dont. The fact that he is the only candidate with a plan is going to be a huge boost. Especially since Obama's entire campaign is built on the premise that we dont need no stinking plans or policy proposals, and Hillary has said she would bring Universal Healthcare in her Second term (her words not mine)

In all fairness, Obama's been in the presidential race for a fraction of the time that Edwards has. Obama only formally announced his candidacy a month and a half ago. He's not one of those candidates who six months ago knew he'd be running for President...his frenzy had reached a fever pitch, so he jumped in...he really is just getting started.

Even if you put aside that Edwards has, essentially, been running for president since 2004, you'll have to acknowledge that more than 1.5 months passed between his official entry into 2008 campaign and the release of his universal health care plan.

Does he need a health care plan? Absolutely...but it's a double standard to extend some type of timeline to Obama when none existed for Edwards.

very true. but even outside of health care obama has been slow to make actual policy proposals. his record in the senate isnt exactly full of meaningful legislation. now granted, he is only a junior senator, but there is nothing stopping him from drafting bills and showing he is trying.

PS All this Edwards stuff on the TV is only marginally less annoying than the Anna Nicole Smith crap.

In just over 24 hours, the books close forever on our first-quarter fundraising. Right now, the future of our campaign and everything we're working to achieve is in your hands.

At 11:59 PM tomorrow night, the phones will start ringing off the hook with reporters asking if we raised enough money to stay in the game.

If the answer is "yes!" we'll earn news stories across the country announcing that a campaign based on bold plans and real substance can still succeed in American politics. Millions of new voters will learn about the big goals we share and sign up to join the team. We'll be on the road to victory.

Right now, as never before, your contributions have the power to shape the future of this campaign. Please dig deep and give whatever you can—knowing that every dollar you add today will have an unprecedented power to make the vision we share a reality.

http://johnedwards.com/r/9116/813727/

If you support the big goals of this campaign, it's time to ask yourself: Who is going to pitch in at this critical moment? Who is going to step up to make sure we succeed?

There are some people who want to escalate the war in Iraq and oppose any real plan to bring our troops home—it won't be them.

There are some people who think America is just not ready for universal health care—it won't be them.

There are some who think it's simply not their responsibility to worry about poverty in the streets of their city or in a village halfway around the world—it won't be them.

And there are some people who are not interested in conserving energy and think global warming isn't a threat—it certainly won't be them.

This is why most candidates don't get specific; they want to be all things to all people and not lose anyone's support. But I am getting specific because I know that to really achieve the transformational change we believe in, there's just no other way.

If you share a commitment to ending the war, guaranteeing health care for all, stopping global warming and building a fair, prosperous economy for everyone, no one else is going to step up in your place to make it all happen—it has to be you.

And with this deadline one day away, it has to be now:

http://johnedwards.com/r/9118/813727/

Thank you for taking action today,

John Edwards

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Former Sen. John Edwards of North Carolina has raised more than $14 million for his bid for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination, his campaign announced Sunday. Roughly $1 million of this total has been earmarked for the general election.

Almost $3.3 million of the $14 million total was raised from the more than 37,000 contributions made over the Internet, Jonathan Prince, Edwards' deputy campaign manager, said.

"Congratulations—we did it! Or, more accurately, you did it.

As the clock ticked towards midnight on Saturday, we all watched with amazement as our online fundraising total surged towards our goal. $2.9 million... $2.95 million... $3 million! We had already hit a goal that just a week earlier had seemed unthinkable, but it just kept climbing. By the time the dust settled at midnight our online community had chipped in over $3.3 million dollars. Absolutely incredible.

Elizabeth and I are humbled and deeply inspired by this outpouring of grassroots energy. We are more committed than ever to run a bold, visionary campaign worthy of your support.

Overall, here's the story of our first quarter fundraising success by the numbers:

Total raised: Over $14 million (nearly twice what we raised this quarter last time around)
Total contributors: 40,000, representing every state of the union
Grassroots victory: 80 percent of all contributions were $100 or less
So that's what happened; you pulled through and we exceeded all our expectations, ensuring that this campaign will stay competitive in the crucial months to come.

But here's what it means.

It means that a campaign can dare to combine a vision for transformational change with the detailed plans necessary to achieve it.

It means that you and I have the resources we need to keep building grassroots support for the big changes this country needs, like universal health care, an exit from Iraq, a stop to global warming, and a future where no American lives in poverty and the middle class is finally secure.

And it means our campaign has the strength we need to go all the way, and the strength we need to win.

Thank you, so much, for coming through when it matters most. Now let's roll up our sleeves and keep working for the country we love.

Sincerely,

John Edwards

"Today, right now, you and I have the best chance in years to help end the war in Iraq but we must take immediate action.

Here's the situation: Both houses of Congress have voted across party lines to bring our troops home with a plan to fully fund their redeployment and safe return. President Bush has vowed to veto this funding because it hampers his ability to wage endless war—he'd rather block funding for the troops than listen to the overwhelming majority of the American people who want the war to end.

Yesterday, Bush called a special press conference and made his strategy crystal clear: veto funding for the troops and then blame Congress for the results. He's betting that Congress will buckle under the pressure and just drop their plan to end the war. We cannot let that happen.

So today, I'm launching an emergency petition to Congress, urging them to stand firm on Iraq. We have to show every senator and representative that their constituents will not be fooled by Bush's ploy—Congress must not abandon the plan to end the war. We're aiming to gather at least 100,000 signatures before the showdown begins after Congress returns to Washington next week. Please add your name today:

How does putting property that your family has owned and lived on for decades that you now have to sale because you can no longer afford property taxes equate to wealth?

He may be wealthy if he can sell his home, but he isn't yet.

If you can't see the hypocrisy here, then that's sad.

Either way, Edwards is still better than anyone else so far.
