^^ yeah, i think that's "fired", though, meaning as soon as production starts again, most or all of them will immediately get their jobs back.
of course, there's no telling how long the strike goes on for, and i guess it's not really any consolation for those people not getting a paycheck

The writers said this. Of course they are going to say something like this when they are on strike to negotiate higher pay.

Yeah, too bad you're not going to pay me more. I just had this awesome idea that you'll never know about now.

No, Jenna Fischer (Pam) said this on her myspace. I'm pretty sure she's not a writer.
From her myspace:
Quote :
"And, I'm sad to say the one we were getting ready to shoot was going to be the funniest of the year. I'm sure of it. They've been pitching this particular story idea for over 2 years…it involves Pam and Jim being in Michael's home but that's all I'll say. I hope we get to shoot it soon. "

Also from Jenna Fischer's myspace:

Quote :
"I should probably tell you that I support my head writer/producer Greg Daniels and the writing staff of The Office in their decision to strike"

Quote :
"Some people have asked if everyone will benefit from the strike or if only the writers benefit. The Writers Guild only negotiates for writers. However, they are the first union contract to be up with the studios. The Actor's Guild contract is up in June 2008 and you can bet we will be fighting for the same residuals. It is important to support the writer's strike because the results of this strike will trickle down to the other union contracts...just like how a court ruling effects future rulings. We are a union show and hire union crew members."

So the point still stands. BTW... the surefire way to tell how bad the next Metallica album will be is to listen to how the band talks it up "it's going to be our best album," "the heaviest album since ______," etc. I read Jenna's comment and I don't see much of a difference. They're just trying to sell their show and build sentiment for their cause.

michael more fits the british version where he isnt supposed to have redeeming qualities when he interacts with toby. he asks to sit down w/ toby, toby lets him and is trying to be nice and michael just continues being an ass.

Several ways. Why do they go out in the streets to picket with signs when they could just as easily carry out the strike by simply not writing? Why are they trying to get camera time?

They want to get the viewers behind their cause because they know that the viewers can apply pressure to the networks as well. After all, without the viewers the networks are nothing. The networks are losing potential advertising dollars and saying things like "the very next show after we went on strike was going to be the best show ever" only makes the die hard fans clamor that much more for a resolution to the problem.

I wouldn't be surprised to find out that several people have already written into the networks voicing their support for the writers.

A lot of people are writing letters (I've written and sent mine) and here are some good guidelines if anybody else wants to.

http://www.officetally.com/call-to-action-write-a-letter

and this is still the most informative article I've seen online about the strike. It looks like both sides are going back for more negotiation on November 26th!

but that episode was the worst of the season

like another poster said a few pages back, let's keep shit in the office, i get tired of a new adventure every week that either really works (like the karen's office sabotage) or is pretty meh (like this week)

I think the reason this week's "out of office" experience was so good was because it didn't necessarily have to be out of the office. It was mostly the same characters, and they just sat around a table and talked the whole time, kind of like they do inside the office. There was nothing outrageous about them sitting around and talking, and that is where The Office is at its best.

that's what makes it so funny...such a random small event in the 1st season triggered his ridiculous hatred for toby, and michael goes and blows it way out of proportion.....comedic gold

In my opinion at least, that scene was one of the funniest they've ever done (I'm biased since the Michael/Toby relationship is my favorite part of the show) but they couldn't have executed that scene better....you really thought Toby was gonna break through to him, and then Michael keeps the same sullen face and reminds me why I watch the show every week

I don't think it was a "random event"

Toby works is HR so he works for corporate, so he's the only person in the office that Michael isn't the boss of

So Toby isn't part of the office 'family'...also he's divorced, so he's not part of of his own family either

ok well I realized it's not one event, but Toby always stomps on all his "wonderful" ideas...i.e. shooting down michael's idea for alcohol at a party

Michael would get (and still does get) all excited about random ideas he comes up with, then Toby steps in and speaks up against it

The revelation of his hatred in the first episode of the 2nd season "Toby Flenderson is everything that is wrong with the paper industry" is one of my favorite parts of all time (if I missed him talking shit about Toby prior to that, it wasn't as funny)

yeah, he always is the downer for michael

he cancelled his credit card when he was using them for magic tricks, and then didn't want to pay for his hooters lunch, didn't want alcohol at the vegas night, etc

Toby is the man and the relationship between him and Michael is hilarious to me.

Michael is always a dick to him and it gets to me every time. Remember when he didn't let Toby go to the beach trip. Poor Toby

From Jenna Fisher's myspace blog:

Quote :
"In Office news, the strike is getting really scary. Talks have broken down and they aren't planning to resume until after the New Year. It looks like this is going to last longer than we thought. There is a chance we will be shut down for the entire rest of our season. Jim and Pam finally get together and I don't get to find out what happens! ARGH!"

its not that toby is a downer

its that toby is HR

if you are out of school and have a corporate type job and deal with HR in any capacity

he is the character embodiment of HR at every company

its not that he's being a dick, he is being his job's reputation

"Oh! I heard that we might see an end to the strike sooner rather than later. The Director's Guild struck a deal with the studios even though their union contracts aren't up until June. The hope is that this deal can serve as a starting ground between the writers and studios as many of the same issues are at hand. I don't really know what will happen. There aren't any new talks in the works but everyone seems hopeful for the first time in awhile. "

yea the director's guild getting a deal in a week with no strike while the writers guild has already taken months and used a strike may show that the directors guild has smarter negotiators but i dont think it should lead you to believe that the writers guild will be wrapped up anytime soon. the writers guild decided to play hardball and the networks realized that they can live for awhile without them, so they have the upper hand.
