heavenly will NOT be open on the 21st man. maybe they will have one beginner lift open, and another lift that leads you to a couple blues with huge grass patches...
my personal projection is nov 28 for heavenly and maybe dec 10 til it's really off and popping proper. I look at the heavenly slopes multi times a day, i assure you it will not be smooth riding on the 21st.
edit: north/west shore will be your best bet for good snow before december. south shore is like sunny blue birds and pretty warm temps.

I just got my new Nitro Team board, should arrive later this week. Then its off to SLC for 9 days before christmas!
Should I wax my new board before I ride? Or is the factory wax quality, therefore eliminating the need to wax? Or shall I ride the board for a few days, then get it professionally waxed?
The internet says yes to all three questions... 11/19/2008 10:20:04 PM |

snowboarding. and i don't want to look too stupid. i think i can maybe wear a youth size. but i want it to breathe. i wear youth goggles and gloves so maybe a youth helmet would fit. i should probably go somewhere and try on before ordering online. anyway...recommendations? also who sells these things in raleigh? rei? alpine ski? vertical urge? i just don't know.

its great for only being 3hrs or so from raleigh
but the fact that a season pass costs the same there as it does at Mt. Baker is fucking retarded

it won't compare to snowshoe because it isn't as big. and it is still NC skiing the chances of conditions being shitty if you go are always a little higher than with WVA.
but it is close to raleigh. i mean if you like snowboarding you will have fun. we drive up to app ski mtn a lot and snowboard there and that has like what 2 terrain parks and 3 runs or something and i still have tons of fun.
and if you're only comparing to snowshoe then you'll just find it smaller. if you were comparing it to somewhere out west then you'd probably be REALLY disappointed 11/25/2008 11:21:09 AM |

^^^^ it's pretty comparable to wintergreen. not as good as snowshoe.
^^^ true, but Mt. Baker is wicked cheap, especially for what you get. Baker and Stevens' Pass are probably my two least favorite places I've skiied out west, but they do have a ton of snow, and they're still good. I've probably skiied them 10 times each.
^^ Appalachian Ski Mountain is the suckiest place I've ever skiied by a wide margin. Absolutely terrible. As far as Sugar goes, I wouldn't say that it's only smaller than Snowshoe. Besides not having as good of conditions or as much snow (on average), Sugar doesn't have as much steep terrain (I don't recall anything at Sugar that compares to Cup Run or that other slope beside it at Snowshoe). All in all, Snowshoe is significantly better in terms of terrain and conditions...not just a matter of being bigger.
...but nothing in the east compares to any place I've ever skiied out west, in either the Rockies, the Cascades, or whatever range Whistler is part of. If you like to ski/snowboard but have never been out west, you are missing out. It's a whole new world (and probably a very humbling experience the first time you go out there).

^^ haha i know it isn't just bigger that is why my first line included this:
Quote : | "and it is still NC skiing the chances of conditions being shitty if you go are always a little higher than with WVA. " |
but i mean it is in NC, it is close to Raleigh, and it is cheap. if you REALLY want to board, then you'd go. that is why i go to App. i never said it was awesome, i just said when my options include 1) not snowboarding or 2) going somewhere in NC that is 2 hours away from where i live and cheap, i choose option 2. haha and if APP is the worst you've skiied you should try like winterplace or hawk's nest but yea, definitely wasn't saying app was good, just saying that if your choices are ski in NC or don't ski, ski in NC (if you really like skiing/snowboarding, if you don't like it, then just don't go). but like i say, i'd rather go in shitty conditions than not at all.
well...moderately shitty conditions (which is like, NC almost all of the time). not shitty shitty conditions.
and p.s. the last time i went to showshoe the conditions sucked. i've been there a few times when the conditions sucked. that is southeast skiing!!! you take your chances.

^^ oh, agreed, except for the part about App. Ski Mt. I've skiied Sugar and Beech (can't remember if I've skiied Hawksnest or not) and had a good time. They're no Whistler, or Park City, or Canyons, but plenty of fun for a day trip (or weekend trip) as an easy drive up from Raleigh.
App. Ski Mt just sucks, though. I mean, there are what, 3 runs? Four? The longest one is what, a quarter mile? The "black diamond" run there is arguably not even a legitimate blue. I mean, if it's your first day skiing/snowboarding, I guess it's fine (although it costs several times over what a reasonable price would be), but if you have any idea what you're doing, you'll be bored and ready to go in about 15 minutes.

Welp if anyone has a clue, let me know...
On a more exciting note, I'll be heading to CO for Christmas and as much as I LOVE WP, I may try Steamboat Springs... I may just do both.. I am saving my money
Also flights in March to CO are 168.00 round trip which is pretty good! If they stay that way by Jan, I'll be putting in some comp time to make sure I can get out there again 12/4/2008 8:51:53 AM |

well fucking shit.
Here's a headsup to anyone flying United/Air Canada this winter.
check the oversize bags limits, and decide if you want to ship your gear or whatever.
Quote : | "Oversized baggage fee If you have tickets purchased... for travel... then the following fee applies for oversized bags for each direction of travel: on or after October 2, 2008 on or after November 10, 2008 $175 per bag " |
Quote : | "Any checked bag with a single dimension more than 62 inches/158 cm will not be accepted. Any checked bag that is more than 115 linear inches/292 linear cm will not be accepted. Oversized baggage charges are applied in addition to any charges that may be assessed for overweight and/or excess baggage.
*linear measurement = length + width + height" |
so if im reading that right, I have a 158cm snowboard, with a 162cm bag.
this bag will not be accepted on their flights as checked luggage.
There's no way this is right, is there?
I guess I need to look into shipping my shit, or fuck i dont know12/4/2008 2:33:59 PM |

well yea that is true. i guess i should clarify. when i go there i usually leave after school and get up there for the night skiing (or after it has already started) and pay the night session price (like 15 dollars?) and go for an hour or two. def def def not good for an all day thing. that would suck and yes is overpriced! i never really thought of that. i'm definitely bored after awhile and more than 2 hours of it is too much.
oh and the black diamond is definitely not even. and it isn't even a full run i think it is just like a cut through?? i can't remember.
hawk's nest was sorta like app. maybe they had more runs. i can't remember. i just remember it was kinda ghetto. but apparently it got turned into a tubing thing that is the longest tubing on the east coast? this is just what i HEARD i don't know if it is true

its true about hawksnest, they no longer offer skiing just tubing because the town of seven devils gave them hell about expanding. So now they offer crazy amounts of tubing which i'm sure will eventually lead to them shutting down completely. It sucks bc hawksnest had a good shot at a lot of expansion and they were a less well known spot than sugar/beech and were open till midnight 12/5/2008 2:00:51 AM |

Their slopes were absolutely horrible the one time I went there. The kicker is that I went to Sugar and Beech the weekends before and after Hawk's Nest and they were both about as good as NC gets, so it wasn't the weather conditions.
