the only reason for my thinking is that at first we were led to believe that the hatch was some big mystical thing, then we find out its just Desmond down there pushing a button ever 108 minutes, and it was just the lights down there shining up, was it really that bright? (thats a real question i haven't seen that episode in forever and can't remember) the light in the preview just seemed like one hell of a beam

are you referring back to season 1 or 2 when the Locke and Boone first saw the light from the hatch?
Yes - it was really bright - a big beam going straight up.
When we got down into the hatch, they showed a mirror at 45-deg pointing straight up the hatch out the window

^dude

i just watched the episode

it isn't a bright cannon of light like in the preview, its just enough light for locke to know something is going on down there

the light cannon doesn't happen until they blow that sucker and send kate down in season 2 (the episode i'm bout to watch)

^^^^yeah, theres def a light canon in (i think) 02x01
but like i said, i'm bout to check

so i'm just putting some stuff together/predicting what happens/happend

Witmore looks relatively young on the island, lets say for the sake of argument he is 20 (i'm trying to go low), and it is 1955 when we just saw him, i'm thinking he probably doesn't age either while on the island (like Richard), because off the island he certainly doesn't look the 75+ years old he would have to be (and he could be much, much, much older, who knows how long they've been there, not aging), so i'm thinking once Ben killed all of Dharma people and became the leader of the others, he gets in to some conflict with Widmore, and banishes him from the island

Did anybody else have the crazy ass thought that maybe the H-bomb was buried deep, just like Daniel said they should, then they built the Hatch (Swan station which was also way under ground) over the site, and when Desmond turned the failsafe key he was actually triggering the H-bomb, which would explain the massive crater that resulted.

I dunno, just something that popped into my head when I heard Daniel tell them to bury it.

related - does anyone know how old charlotte is supposed to be?

[Edited on January 28, 2009 at 10:45 PM. Reason : i may need to rethink whether he was her father/grandfather]"

She is 25. That is what i was trying to address with the comment below.
Quote :
i would suspect her grandfather would be older than widmore's age in 1954. The guy locke killed didn't look that old, but i imagine if he was supposed to have a child very young and her father then had a child very young it could be possible.
As for it being her grandfather or father that was killed, i'm not sure if i can sign on to that mostly because she had started her nose bleeds and memory lapses before locke hit the guy in the back with the knife.

Quote :
"but apparently, Widmore funded Daniel's research "

they described widmore as a benefactor. if daniel's mom is from the island and widmore takes care of daniel so much, perhaps widmore is daniel's father? that would be sort of wild.

Quote :
"Why didn't he detain Desmond and make him tell where Penny was?"

As you recall he stopped Sun before she went to LA and then Sun immediately went to go see kate and began to slowly mind fuck her. who knows if widmore sent Desmond to the right place or if he sent him into a scenario that he knew would get desmond trapped on the island again, which is why he was so concerned about him making sure penny was safe. Also, penny is on her way to LA and ben, who has vowed to kill her, is there. this should make for interesting story.

Quote :

but ben aged while he was on the island. as it stands the only person we know who doesn't age is richard.

Yeah, and bunnies don't travel through time... I'm not saying that's definitely the case, just trying to see where they could go with the H-bomb, and remember that anything's possible on this show. And also, H-bomb or not, Desmond should have been killed by whatever blast caused the crater, but he wasn't, he just ended up naked in the jungle with a time travelling consciousness.

but we also saw Ben being born off the island, then come to it. We don't know where (or when) Widmore was born, my point was that if he looks about 20 years old on the island in 1955, he definately does not look 70 something years old currently, thats why i theorized maybe he wasn't aging on the island

[Edited on January 29, 2009 at 10:23 AM. Reason : but maybe he just looks good for his age]

but IF Ellie is Eloise Hawking she does appear to age. She looks to be about 20 when its 1954 and 70 when its 2004. Whats the difference between her and widmore. Are they not both hostiles? Does this explain why she's on ben's side and not Widmorez?

i'm really interested in seeing locke go back off the island and finding out what it is that causes everyone to die if those who left don't come back and why their return stops it from happening.

I mean, time travel, really? This show has gone off the deep end and when you consider how many plot holes and unanswered question and stupid goofy shit there was before they started jumping around through time, that's saying something.

"How old is Richard anyway?" (knowingly) "Old." Give me a fucking break.

i think, of all the things they have explained so far, everything is wrapped together really well. we're seeing things now that were hinted at in season 1. while we don't have the answers now, they certainly won't leave them unaddressed.

note: not trying to start a cloud argument here

it's been 54 years since 1954, if that guy was ~20 years old, and would had a child within 4 years, its very likely that person would have had a child by the time they were 25 years old, and that child would now be 25

it isn't that hard

i mean, i'm only 2 years older than charlotte, and my grandmother would have been roughly 28 or so in 1954, and my mom was born late in my grandma's life, while i was born later in my mom's life

i'll put up $ that says locke killed her grandfather

I said initially that i thought it was possible, just not likely. The year in which she is 25 is 2004, as thats the year that she is in. This reduces the average age of each parent to ~22. Not to mention the gestation period of her father and her of 9 months each, that reduces it by another 1.5years. you're timeline for it being her grandfather is looking less and less likely. HOWEVER ONCE AGAIN i stated earlier that what you said is possible, i just find the likelihood to be low. Maybe i'm a little biased because my grandmother was born in 1912 and my dad was born in 1954 and charlotte was older than I would have been in 2004.

I'm willing to take that monetary bet on it being her grandfather, btw.

I love how this is the only on TV that can completely exclude probably its two biggest characters from an entire episode and no one gives a fuck

At this point, are you guys more intrigued by the story of the people still on the island and their time travel adventures

or the story of the Oceanic 6 and their struggles in the real world and quest to make it back to the island

For me its the island people, by a long shot

and its kinda funny how my 3 favorite characters (Farraday, Desmond and Ben) were not original cast members

they've been basically doing that since season 2, off and on
you'd have those episodes either entirely, or almost entirely, devoted to michael's raft crew and then the tail-section people

but yeah, 3 years ago if an episode had no kate whatsoever i would have been pissed

but i basically hate kate now...
and i don't think off-island kate is nearly as hot as on-island kate

and ^ a lot of people think that she's dead

and the two main problems with actually betting is:

1. you need a party to keep the cash in escrow
2. lost may never explain why she's dying - it wouldn't be the first time (unless someone can tell me why mr eko was finally killed by smokey)

but how much were you thinking?

Bet: $20.00

Stipulations

1. If the man killed by Locke was the grandfather of Charlotte Lewis IRSeriousCat will give Woodfoot $20.00 and IRSeriousCat will give Woodfoot $5 for good will if the knifed character happens to be her father.

2. If the man killed is not the grandfather or father of Charlotte Woodfoot gives IRSeriousCat $20.00

3. If the reason for the nose bleeds and illness are never explicitly detailed and can not be safely assumed by the majority of those who frequent this thread at the conclusion of season 5 then the bet is null and void.

Personally, i'm a man of my word and I don't need to place the money in escrow. Sadly, i value my tww cred too much to be that much of a nancy. By that design i can take you on your word as well.

Terms accepted?

she's definitely not dead.
Last episode we saw her in alive on the island was cabin fever

if a main character dies, they'd make a big deal out of it.

*SEMI SPOILER*

after listening to that podcast they referenced how the force from the island prevented micheal from killing himself was the same force preventing Jack from killing himself (the car crash) like 2 seasons ago because he had work to do. They also hinted that *maybe* Charles and Ben couldn't die either until their work was done and that *maybe* this was one of the rules they were referring to during that same time period that widmore became a more important character.
