I've gone there about three times, still haven't eaten there though. I have never been to the 2nd or 3rd floor on nights with cover charges so I'm not sure what the level of douchebaggery is.

Solas really dropped the ball for new years. very disappointed not to mention the bouncers are real douche bags (some of them). But we all still had fun since we were a big group of 20. It just didn't feel like new years.

For starters:

1) There was no count down to new years. The dj kept on spinning and half the people there didn't realize it was 12am until after the fact.

2) there were no tv's that showed the acorn drop. (not that that was important but there are TV's there)

3) No complimentary champagne but then again look back at number 1.

4) After going up to the roof for a few minutes and coming back down to re-enter the 2nd floor the bouncer wouldn't let us in. I told him we have a private room and his response was to go downstairs and get a hostess. So i told him I'm not going anywhere and he can get on his headset and call _____ (insert managers name) and he let us in right away. I shouldn't have to jump through hoops like that.

5) Another incident at the end of the night which of course involved bouncers.

For a place that is supposed to be upscale they certainly hired some inexperienced staff to handle that kind of clientele. These are the kind of bouncers I would expect to be at Buckhead or some other overcrowded shitty bar.

I guess I don't understand the obsession with the countdown, since a lot of nights I don't even leave the house until after midnight. I feel like complimentary champagne is cheesy and a hassle to get distributed, but that's just me.

The stuff with the private room is kinda bush league, though.

I don't even know what bush league means.

and every where i've ever been for new years has always passed out complimentary champagne especially if you have a private room. And the whole count down like it or not is a part of new years...other wise its just another night out on the town.

Complimentary champagne is ridiculous for a bar that big...especially in Raleigh. I would might expect it at a swanky place in NYC or LA...but not Raleigh...and for smaller bars. The pain in the ass that it creates to do that for a big bar is not worth.

That's my point. It's just a fucking night. There's nothing special about it except that there are extra cops on the road and more morons blocking my way to the bar on a Wednesday.

It's a date that was arbitrarily chosen by Gregory XIII's lackeys.

I couldn't care any less about it if there wasn't a badass Hendrix jam associated with it.

i was at a pretty large bar for NYE and they did comp champange- they just had waitresses and bartenders bring out pre-filled plastic flutes to everyone before midnight (they started at like 11:50- and everyone had one by midnight)

this is why Raleigh doesn't have any high end bars (solas included) because you think its ridiculous to have complimentary champagne. Even for a small time place like Solas they could at least provide it for the private room parties.

Totally not ridiculous. First of all, at wholesale, J. Roget is like $3/bottle. Second of all, you get the plastic champagne cups, fill up 200 on the bar and distribute via cocktails or just by passing around. Everyone who is interested in toasting, gets to toast.

NOT complicated and really not that big of an expense. (Not with a $20 cover or $75 dinner.)
