Are you referring to the Duke game in which State blew a ~15 lead with ~10:00 remaining? That was the 2004 ACC Championship game where Reddick went off and hit everything. I had $100 on State to win the ACC tourney at 15-1 and $100 on the ML for that game at 4-1. That was a tough pill to swallow. 1/22/2009 2:04:12 PM |

The sad thing about that great Maryland team was that two of thier best players (Wilcox, Blake) were all but signed and sealed for NC State and we didn't want them.
Instead we took Michael Bell and Cliff Crawford 1/23/2009 8:44:14 AM |

^I thought it was his fifth season? It was Grundy's senior year, whenever that was.
Anyway, I'm with bullet. I had to deal with Herb pretty regularly in the media relations office. All this talk about him being a nice human being, a great guy, yadayadayada is really blown out of proportion. He was a decent guy who got EXTREMELY MOODY with no remorse or reason. He was pretty abrasive as well.
I'm happy he's doing well at ASU, but I honestly, I'm thrilled he's not here anymore. The guy was a good coach and had an outstanding defensive mind, but he was never going to get us where we wanted to be. He knew that -- we knew that.
Will Lowe? It's not looking good so far, but we'll see. 1/23/2009 12:35:38 PM |

I really don't see how people can say that. He was changing things and we were improving. Who knows what he could have done with Chris Wright at the helm. Remember those 5 NCAA teams were all without a true point mostly. Archie, Crawford, Atsur were not true PGs....1/23/2009 12:44:54 PM |

The first time we made it to the championship in that 3 of 4 span is when we got totally blown out at the championship. That was the year we beat MD, which was the 2001-2002 season as MD won the championship-Reddick wasn't here yet. The next year, with Powell going lights out and with us having the 15pt lead at the half, is when "Duke shit" happened and we lost that game. I do blame the refs a lot for that. The last time we made it with Herb I really don't remember much. 1/23/2009 12:46:06 PM |

With the football team we have coming back next year, being a junior wouldn't be too bad. We might have a chance to do something big next year (temporing expectations ...). Being a senior would suck ass though. Sorry guys.
Back to Herb though: Forget the "no ACC titles in 10 years" thing. I don't really care about that -- and honestly, i don't think winning an ACC title should be a goal of ours at this point. The telling thing is that we had one top-25 finish in the 10 years he was here. One. I'm not one to live in the past, but with the fans, history, and facilities NC State has, this seems a little underwhelming. 1/23/2009 12:56:59 PM |

I agree, the coaching search was a mess. But it was what the fans wanted. People were convinced we were a Top 10 job in the country and everyone and their mom's would want to come coach here. Fowler also put our entire athletics program into debt and then asked for an increase of $40/year in student fee money to help fix it. Why am I paying for his fuck ups? Also, since Fowler took his job, I think all but 4 DI schools have won a national championship in something. We are one of those 4 (rifle team does not count)

Bruce Pearl wanted to come here but we got rid of Herb too late to grab him.

I'm a 5th year...I got the last year of Julius Hodge and a Sweet 16 appearance, but had to deal with the QB version of Marcus Stone, Jay Davis, Daniel Evans, the ACC championship teaser two years ago, last year's basketball collapse...the only joys I've had are the Car Care Bowl win and rushing the court against UNC.

When he was at Milwaukee he was married to Norm Sloan's neice. I remember Herb's team playing him in the NIT one year and he was talking about how every one of his in-laws would disown him if he beat NC State becuase he's the only non-NC State fan in the family. He said it was a 'special program' to his entire family, especially considering what Norm did there
You've got to think that since it was a step up and had family significance he would have taken it....probably even over Tennessee. I guess we'll never know, but I'd guess he would have
Since then, though, he left Sloan's neice for another woman.
One thing we do know NOW is that there's no way in hell he'd ever be offered the job even if he wanted it. I'm sure Sloan would pull some strings
And we could have had Belien. Belien wanted the job.... he wanted any decent job other than WV.... he just wasn't worth his ($4 million?) buyout. Hell, he offered to pay half of it himself and we still said no.

UW beating UCLA today makes it just a little easier for ASU to win the conference.
if ASU beats the teams they should beat (OSU, Oregon, Zona, Wazzou x2) and pulls out a few toughies (UWx2, USC @ home, UCLA @ home, Stanford @ home, Cal @ home) then they should take the conference 1/24/2009 6:33:00 PM |

Quote : | "Sendek finding an oasis in the desert CAULTON TUDOR, Staff Writer Comment on this story Lots of N.C. State fans would not be surprised to know that their former basketball coach, Herb Sendek, declined to make a big deal about his Arizona State team's trip to rival Arizona on Wednesday night. In 10 seasons with the Wolfpack, Sendek practically perfected the art of not emphasizing one game more than another. He took it so far, in fact, that it got him in hot water after a one-sided loss to North Carolina in the RBC Center during the 2005-06 season. The coach's "just 1/16th [of the conference regular-season schedule]" line after that defeat went over like an air-ball on the opening possession.
But different strokes for different folks, as the old song goes. And in Tempe, where Sun Devils basketball long has been on the wrong end of a one-sided Arizona series, Sendek is emerging as King Herb I.
Sendek's team won in Tucson, 53-47, despite shooting less than 30 percent on field-goal attempts.
Granted, the once-mighty Wildcats have gone the way of striped knee socks and short court shorts. But whether or not it says something about the relative strengths of the Pacific 10 vs. the ACC, Sendek is proving there can be life -- even a happy, rich, productive life -- after having been worked over by Mike Krzyzewski, Roy Williams, Gary Williams, Shammond Williams, Chris Williams, Jay Williams, Shelden Williams, Jawad Williams, Marvin Williams, Eric Williams and, yes, Cornelius Williams.
With almost a full week to prepare for games against visiting Washington State and Washington next weekend, Sendek and the Sun Devils are 16-3 overall, 5-2 in the Pac-10, perfectly positioned to win the league regular-season championship and grab an NCAA Tournament No. 1, 2 or 3 seed. They have to visit the Washington schools and the two in Oregon. Otherwise, the remaining games will be played in Tempe, where Arizona State is undefeated this season.
The three losses have been at Baylor (nonconference), California and Southern California. Those were easily offset by an overtime win at UCLA.
And being as committed to his complicated offensive system as a summer day is long in the desert, Herb is doing it his way. The Sun Devils scored all of 64 points against Nebraska and won by 20. UCLA managed to scare up 58 points (even with the extra five minutes) in its three-point loss. In the loss at USC, the Sun Devils were held to 49. At Cal, they did score 71 -- and lost by 10.
But Sendek has found his niche, and more power to him for doing so. His subdued personality and probing offense never created a loud buzz in Raleigh. In and around Phoenix, Herb has become a fine fit.
Sendek's former school struggles on, and the time could be approaching when the Sidney Lowe experiment runs its course. In college sports, it's often about what you are and where you are.
In Raleigh, the expectations were high and the results mediocre. At ASU, the expectations were for a coach capable of chasing a legendary program. Herb caught a break, and made the most if it, around the time that Lute Olson ran out of gas at Arizona. At State, Sendek had the same sort of opening when Dean Smith retired at UNC after the 1996-97 season. But Smith left Bill Guthridge with a wealth of talent as Krzyzewski was catching his second professional wind.
Sendek was caught in a riptide few coaches could have survived. Try as he might, which he did, he could neither recruit, nor completely coach, his way out of a vicious crossfire. At Arizona State, he seems to be the right coach in the right place and at the right time. He's a good man who deserves a good break.
He may not have been right for the Pack, but there's more to the college basketball world than that stretch of highway between Winston-Salem and Raleigh." |
