Hi all, just wondering if any of you guys have done any other workout programs and how they compare to Crossfit. I have done P90X twice and Insanity once, and I am just looking for something that helps me cut some body fat and maybe get a little more definition out of my abs.

I've done P90x a couple of times. It's ok, but it's more like aerobics for men.

The best way I know how to describe the difference is that P90x is geared around looks, while Crossfit is 100% performance-oriented.

Like I said, I've only done a couple of P90X workouts, but from what I've seen, there's no comparison between the difficulty of P90X and any except for the very easiest Crossfit workouts.

did today's WoD, except that I did both 1-mile runs on treadmills, because it's hotter than Satan's balls outside here in Baghdad (although mercifully a few degrees cooler than it was in Qatar).

then did 2x10 swings with a 70-lb kettlebell, and 2x10 swiss ball crunches

^^^ proper nutrition will do that for you

although in my honest opinion heavy lifting + proper nutrition is the best way to decrease body fat

Yeah, I did that one a couple days ago. Didn't think it was bad at the time, but I felt pretty tired the rest of the evening.

I didn't actually time mine, so I won't swear to this...my run times were also around 8 minutes or so, but 20 minutes for rowing 2k sounds way off. Are you sure it took that long? Was the rower set to some unholy resistance level or something?

More than likely the rower was set to too low of a resistance which just means you have to yank that rope about twice as many times as necessary.

I am interested in starting Crossfit primarily because the workouts are shorter (half hour it seems) and are obviously intense. I have been doing P90X for a few months now, but I am frequently having to modify/shorten the workouts because I really only have about 30-35 minutes a day to workout (unless I get up at 5 am which never happens).

Do you guys do your workouts at a gym? My gym (small YMCA) does not have an track or kettleballs so some of the workouts I'd be struggling to find the right equipment.

keep in mind that you also have the cf warmup. Three rounds of the warmup usually adds on another 10-15 minutes. But p90x is a good precursor to crossfit. I would advise doing 4-6 weeks of strength training (30 mins) and then jump in.

the gym situation will always be a bit of an issue unless you go workout at a box. I work out at a Y and the space and equipment issues always come up, but I try to sub accordingly.

Eva is going to be tough today after Karen yesterday.

^ I am not worried about the strength training. I lifted for years before trying P90X. The main reason I started P90X is because I wanted to do something different. I am not saying that I'll be able to keep up with the experienced Crossfit guys in terms of weight, but I understand how to lift properly and am not weak.

The warm-up thing I did not catch on the website - I'll have to read some more obviously. If it is 10-15 minutes every day, then I'll be back to modifying in order to fit my shitty schedule. I think I am going to have to start waking up early if I want to get a complete workout.

gotcha. bad to assume on my part that p90x was your first real workout regimen. mainly conditioned to that response from folks who are in that boat and want to jump into crossfit, but get hammered when the olympic lifts come into play.

either way, it's all scalable, so go for it. the web site is a wealth of information and the journal is a great value at $25 a year.

not to question your schedule, but do you really not have an extra 10-15 mins a day to warm-up/do your strength training before the WOD? besides, some of the WOD's can take longer than 30-35 mins depending on your cardio, but a lot of them are also significantly shorter so if you're ONLY doing the prescribed WOD, you probably won't be getting a good workout in for the day. it sounds like you might be better off just buying the basic crossfit equipment and working out at your house instead of taking the time to drive to the gym.

^ I work out at lunch time so I am on tight schedule with about 1 hour. I work about 7 minutes from the house, maybe 5 minutes from the Y so working out at home versus gym is not a big deal although I can change quicker at the house and then grab a quick bite to eat. I prefer to workout at the house moreso than the gym because of this.

I am thinking that if I really want to do Crossfit, then I need to start waking up and just do it. I just cannot motivate myself to wake up early to workout for 60-90 minutes with P90X. I have been able to modify the workouts with P90X to fit the tight lunch time frame by shortening the warm-ups and then going as hard as I can with what I can do.

I have still seen results with P90X, but I won't get the super ripped look I want with what I am doing now. That is why I want to try Crossfit because it seems to be more intense and a more compacted workout that will give similar results.

if you're mainly looking to get ripped, i hope you're eating right bc that obviously plays a big part. crossfit won't necessarily get you ripped up, but i guess it depends on the conditioning program at the particular gym you go to. you'll definitely see more definition in your shoulders, traps, and quads pretty quick though.

^^ Unless you have stellar genes, it's unlikely you are gonna get a super ripped look with less than 50 minutes a day, 5 days a week, no matter the program you are on.

nah, that was just my "lap" time. total time for the workout was 30 min., row took about 12 b/c including transition time b/w run and row. still a long time but i'm not used to rowing.

^^ Thanks PackMan92. I hope to be able to do some of the workouts at my gym, but this will help me work out at the house more often.

Also with regard to the getting ripped conversation, I have a decent diet, but I am slowly getting it better by making small steps to take out the "bad" foods. My main problem is that I am always hungry. I try to eat 6 smaller meals, but my work schedule can make that hard to do.

i too am always hungry at work and i use the eat a lot of juicy fruit all day long technique to try and avoid eating anything worse. something about sitting in a chair in front of a computer all day seems to make you hungrier than doing manual labor. for me, i think it's more of a boredom thing than an actual hunger thing, which is why i always try to keep gum and almonds with me so i don't resort to eating honey buns and drinking sodas all day.

probably not. typical breakfast consists of a banana or some bacon at home, then maybe oatmeal at work. almonds for a snack around 10. a cup or two of coffee somewhere along the way. turkey and pepperoni sandwich or tuna depending on the day, with chips/applesauce for lunch. maybe 2-3 fig newtons in the afternoon. and dinner is always a surprise. i do drink my muscle milk after every crossfit though and i usually workout at night. the hunger usually only comes when im sitting in front of the computer at work.

I'm gonna be blunt, your nutrition sounds horrible.

You need more lean meats and fish, green veggies, fruits (the non-starchy kind), nuts/seeds, and I'd recommend fish oil as well.

bluntness is understood. i wouldn't say it's horrible, but i could definitely eat better. it's not quite as bad as i made it sound in that quick summary, but i do need more veggies. i usually get enough fruit, bananas and apples mostly, navel oranges, and seasonal berries like strawberries right now. i eat enough tuna that i probably don't need fish oil pills though. i don't have any excuse other than the usual i don't take enough time to prepare my meals beforehand.

Is anyone still Xfitting? It's been a few weeks since anyone posted.

Today was Tabata: Burpees and Deadlifts (225lbs) alternating rounds for 16mins. Five mins rest and then WOD 2 was a 2k row. 8:08 on the 2k which was kinda depressing bc I really wasn't trying that hard bc I was a little tired and my back is pretty sore from the past two deadlifting sessions, but the last time we did a 2k I got 7:52, so basically even with me trying a lot harder I still only did about 15 secs better. If I wanna get under 7:30 I'm going to really have to row my ass off. Or either grow another 3-4inches.

My sister is not a certified Crossfit trainer. She got certified in Wilmington two weekends ago.

I'd love to join the Crossfit gym down here in Charleston, but its just too expensive for me to justify it right now.

I figure by the time I would feel comfortable about shelling out that money for a membership, I will be absolutely fucking done with a regular gym, so the times will coincide nicely.

I finally started doing some of the Crossfit workouts. I am mixing them with the p90x workouts depending on my schedule. I definitely enjoy the variety so far in the Crossfit workouts as the different moves make the workout more interesting and challenging.

Some of the crossfit moves I have to modify as I don't have either the space or the right equipment.

yea i wouldnt mind joining an xfit gym either but i just cant justify the price. i get a free membership at a really nice globo with my health insurance and i find i can do the majority of the stuff, or a good sub, w/out too much trouble.

btw, yesterday's workout was fun. i mean i almost died as usual but it was something different.

that last overhead walk was tough

Exactly. There is no way in hell I'm going to pay $120-150/month for a XFit gym when I can go to Gold's for $15/month. I don't need all the softcore stuff at Gold's, but I'm not about to pay 10x as much for less equipment at a dedicated XFit facility...especially when the Gold's I go to has an outdoor area with a bunch of tractor tires, fire hydrants, anchor chains, etc to work out with.

I workout there ^ when I go home since it's near my parent's house and I really enjoy it. Clay knows his stuff and everyone else there is always super nice.

In other news, did Fight Gone Bad for the first time today and ended with a somewhat respectable 234. I'm shooting for at least 250 next time, I could def have pushed myself harder but it's tough to do that when it's so hot outside.
